What is a Floater?

I just had someone in my store who claimed to be a floater...does anyone know what this is....they went on about my reselling things etc. The deal is....most of what i sell are my own creations and those that i have purchased full perm versions from the creator and use with their blessing with my own twist. Why do people automatically assume that if you sell something that has another person listed as the creator that it is not ok to do that? I am NOT a good builder so i buy the full perm versions of a few things and yes...i resell them...

So is there such a thing as some official "floater" and if so, what is it LOL

My guess is that it's a self-styled do-gooder. There are such people about who must be bored of everything else.

I always thought a floater was a dead body found in the water or.. uh.. something found in a toilet. Kinda finding it hard to believe that that's what they were talking about though.

I thought a floater was an impurity in the vitreous or aqueous humors of the eyeball, which you can see at times if the lighting is right.

I know what floaters are.... I have fish tanks lol.

I have heard the term before and it seems to be a self appointed person who wants to police the system.

It's just someone with a made-up title, much like all the other SL "police" out there. It can make sense to drop a note to the creator of some item if there is some doubt, but to start accusing a seller without even checking is just goofy.

To the OP, the first thing I would have asked them is what business is it of theirs? Had the bought something? If they were not a Linden or the original creator then you owe them no explanation whatsoever. Sounds to me like someone being nosy because they can find anything constructive to do in world.

I also buy full-pern exclusives from several designers and re-sell them, (although I don't sell them full perm). What you are doing is not wrong in any way if you have the rights to do it from the creator.

Find my shops easily, do a search in world for Giftable Creations.

The best way to test if soeone is really a floater is to orbit them and see if they float or fall. Tell them you're doing them a service. Just trying to help out and all...

If they float, you need to burn them as a a witch.

See if they weigh the same as a duck.

Maybe they were logged on from work?

In an office Temps who have no real department that are assigned to various projects that need a lot of repetitive work ... are sometimes called floaters.

Ive been in SL for almost a year and in biz in SL for along time too and had never heard of a floater....the person was rather difficult, asked for a refund on a purchase mistake, etc. and i did my best to help. Later I got an IM saying they were checking places around SL and would include me in the web site list of great places to shop since i had been so helpful...so it was a test? LOLL who knows

Anyone Official will have Linden as their last name. Sounds like a shakedown artist to me. I would have watched them float away as I ejected them.

Well last time I saw a floater it was in a swimming pool and I was out of there really quickly. I'm not at all sure what sort of floater was in your store though.

def a shake down artist...sighh...kept it up three times today...i finally sent her an im and told her what i thought of her behavior, muted and and banned her...and after swearing at me and making threats about maligning me and my store on her web site, she is now saying she will report me...for what id love to know...i gave her everything she complained about for free. sighhhhh....thanks for listening..this totally sucks

thanks...i did end up aring her...i believe she had bugged me because she started respondng to things i was saying to someone else in private ims....also she was able to tp into my land even tho i had banned her....it got uglier and i got fed up...thanks for all your input and support guys!

While I don't know about this floater name I do know there are plenty of these do-gooders around. But you know what? You can't trust them an inch.

Sounds like this kind of floater is to be carefully avoided, like the ones found in swimming pools & toilets.

My reply to the floater would simply have been "All my products are legitimate. Feel free to contact the content creators and waste their time if you think I'm violating their rights in any way."

The SL permission system is an excellent compromize between sophistication and simplicity. However, I do wish it could be expanded to support models for retailers and value-added relessers. (The latter would be particularly useful for makers of scripts, textures, and building components.) However, I doubt I could come up with a system simple and clear enough to be worthwhile. After all, the current system is quite simple but still causes a lot of confusion!
