I've solved this problem. There's almost nobody on my friends list, and every time this comes up, people talk about how they hate random friend requests, so I'm afraid to ask. No friends, no problems.

If a friend unchecks the "can see my online status checkbox " in the friends list,
but I have not unchecked it for them in my friends list, am I still visible to that friend?.
yes. For your friend to not see you as online, you would have to uncheck the box for them.

From: someone
Does it have anything to do with the properties checked off in the preferences.
(allow only those on my friends list to see my online status checkbox)
No. This has to do with people seeing "Currently Online" when looking at your profile. These are two different things. If you set it so that only friends can see you online, people looking at your profile will not be able to tell you are online unless they are your friend.

Hi,

I am searching for an anser, hopefully someone can answer this for me.

If a friend unchecks the "can see my online status checkbox " in the friends list,
but I have not unchecked it for them in my friends list, am I still visible to that friend?.

Does it have anything to do with the properties checked off in the preferences.

Just wondering if these work together or not. Which one takes presidence?

thanks, SaraJean..

If a friend unchecks you then they will not show on your online status. You, however, will show up on their friends list as online unless you check them.

Serious question. If you friend them, you have their card, which shows whether they are online or not. If you uncheck them does it stop showing there as well? Also, if you open an IM window, if they are on your list, you get a message before you even type anything that says, "___ is not online" does that happen if you have them unchecked and they go to IM you?

I suppose it's moot, because if you send an IM to anyone, it either goes through or you get the message that says it will be stored and delivered when they get in world, so they will know immediately if you are around whether you have them checked or not. There's just no way to really hide, is there?

I delete cards, I think they are a waste, so I have no idea what happens on the calling cards.

Yes, you are correct, there is no way to just hide and chill on SL. The only way to do so is to use an alt. I have one but don't like using it for that because he just doesn't feel like me. I wish there was a way to completely hide yourself, but it doesn't exist.

Would be nice if there were folders for the friends list so someone could hide from everyone except a couple of people quickly.

Right now its a highlight a whole group and hide deal.

It's not even so much that I want to hide. My Achilles heel is multi-tasking. I just can't do it. I'm hopeless. For example, last night I was at the Hangout, dancing with one person (which you wouldn't think would take up too much attention), holding an IM conversation, and trying to follow chat. I was just lost the entire time. Every time I answered in the IM, I lost track of chat, then I'd pull up the history to try to catch up and I'd lose track of the IM. Then I'd get distracted by something going on in the room, like the dancing or Michael winning another Linden out of the fake sploder (hilarious) and I'd lose both. I swear I'm useless.

I really do have a very short friends list (reasons listed above, plus, I'm a jackass. I wouldn't want to be my friend either, but I'm stuck with me, so I have no choice), but I'd like to be able to activate them when I'm free and uncheck when I'm occupied, or I get confused and look like more of an idiot than I actually am.

I hear ya Trout, though I doubt you're an jackass. There are plenty of reasons one would want to hide in SL. I have a very hard time building and IM'ing at the same time.

The other night I was at a club and there were 14 - 15 people there. I looked at the big map and I was the only one there. No Green dots. The mini-map was full of green dots, but the big map... nada!

It can take a minute or two sometimes for the big map to reflect presence. I know many a time I've wanted a count of how many people are on my sim cause I see lots of green dots, then the big map shows just me alone. It takes a minute before the rest show up.

Wow. I'm amazed there's not an easier way. With so many people doing so many things in SL you would think this would be a basic feature.
Until the beginning of 2007, you couldn't appear offline at all, and everybody on your friends list could map you. Now that's something to wow at. ;)

Sad part is if you wanna get busy and work them verts you gotta "cheat" ..

Make an "alternate" / Alt account ..

allow prefs from your main to allow alt to " Edit your Objects" .. ( in the freinds tab )

.. trouble is after one edit/copy cycle the object won't let you edit anymore . (Fix .. Main drops 100+ prims ..which the Alt can build away to hearts content without bother .

Propper fix .. LL allow propper offline notification .. i.e MSN/Yahoo etc.. "Show offline"

unfortunatly not the same here .. SL/show offline .. anyone that sends an IM immediatly knows your online.

Even if you block everyone in your friends list from seeing your online status, they can still see you online if they are in the same group with you. You will still show as online to all the group members in the member list.
