What the hell is a Google Wave?

But seriously, it's a communication and collaboration tool that Google is building. It is currently in alpha testing, so it's a bit rough around the edges. Still, lots of people are excited about it and wish to try it, but you must be invited first.

Because a communication/collaboration tool isn't much use if you can't interact with people you know, Google gives the current users invites to hand out when it comes time to expand the testing base.

ETA: Also, Wave is a protocol like email, not a Google-only service. People will be able to set up their own Wave servers, and Google won't see any of the communication there except for waves that include users with Wave accounts on Google's servers (same as gMail).
