If you were told, you would have to be de-rezzed.

There's a couple of public waves for SL users already in existence.

I have a wave account now for Suezanne, so I can be SuezanneC Baskerville in Wave without needing to derezz anyone.

;0 i'd only made it ten or twenty minutes into the video so far; good reminder for me to check the rest of it out... from what i remembered, it seemed an ambitious online collaborative document workspace... reviewing the video now...

'what if email was invented today?' transform email to more of a 'forum' format, centered upon a conversation 'wave' instead of one user, started by one and shared with another or many... live 'chat' or private... photo albums... live blog updating (including chat!) forward-thinking already for apis for other sites, OS so others can make their own 'frontends' (which would be cross-platform, cross-browser-ubiquitous, at least in intent)...

the 'live' element of it is really exciting; it is the same paradigm as sl and other online chats (gaming or rooms), 'sharing' cyberspace live with someone. live collaborative (and free! and browser-accessible) document space is exciting. so is live blogging, with a 'central control space' to work from to manage many spaces.

starting to zone out around the 55:00 mark; 'robots' and such - twitter integration... and so far though, one crash every ten minutes. ;0 (well not so much after thirty minutes , although there are more pauses for re-configuration or stalls or other things not yet completed.) could use a better name really; i can't imagine replacing 'emails' with 'waves' as a colloquialism... how about a 'splurt'? ;0 crowbar in your own acronym!

overall there is a promising theme of 'centralizing' thoughts, strangely... i wonder what different grouping habits we'd have to develop to adjust to it. log into your multitudinous conversations and blogs and projects, and who knows what else, from one spot eh? :)

ooo, so skip ahead to 1:12:00 or so, to see live multi-lingual chat translation - hey sl got there first!! ;0 and they applaud wildly for that...

at the same time that the audience - while wowwed - also seems a bit cool by the overall of it, there's still a lot of subtle things to this that might really catch on. if it makes blog communicating so easy, it certainly could catch on - and it's got a lot more going for it still. :)

i'd love to sign up and try it. right after i try for my first time another OSviewer to see 'jiggly bewbs'. ;0

p.s. 'DON'T you'll BE deREZZED!' is one of the -sexiest- lines in the movies lol prrrrrrr ;0

I read a review of it today that made me not interested. Apparently, when you converse, every letter you are typing shows as you type it. It is supposed to be more like the way people actually converse, but I can't imagine how deadly it must be to watch

Anyone have any ideas for integrating it with SL?

The similarity for me is that Wave is "collaborative". That is, everybody sees what everybody else (on the wave) is doing. Sound familiar?

Hmmm. How about a Wave on a prim, so that several people can collaborate on a Notecard (overkill, I know. Just thinking.)

Not everyone who is in Wave can nominate others.

I got accepted too late, I just now discovered, and can't at present send any nominations for invites.

Those who are in Wave who do have invite ability should be able to find a "Invite other to Google Wave" wave in their wave Inbox.

;0 oh yah - when they demonstrated that, they pointed out a little button (that doesn't work yet lol) to revert to traditional 'send only on return'...

Meh. My comment to a friend who assumed I was already on it, and then tld me about it when I gave her a blank stare in return, was "Oh... According to the website info at the link that you sent me, it looks to me like AOL on Speed."

Not terribly interesting to me. Especially I disliked the idea that it shows what you type as you type it, and not when you hit "send". All too often someone types something while you are composing a reply to a previous statement, and it completely revises what you want to actually send. And I can't imagine trying to follow two or more growing strings of text at once.

Oh god, I haven't seen anyone try that since the late '80s, when people really started hacking on timeshared and network chat for the first time and were experimenting with everything. There was write and talk and ytalk and xtalk and competing protocols and security holes (I managed to get root on one of the EECS 11/70s because one of the profs forgot that if you put a shell escape in a setuid program... well... you can see how that goes).

It's REALLY annoying. You get to see everyone's typos as they make them, you get to see them back up and correct what they're typing. It's excruciating. I tried making a variant that worked a word at a time to try and see if that compromise helped any. It might have, a teeny bit, but not enough to matter. This was a really bad idea in 1979 and it's a really bad idea in 2009.

ICQ used to have the character by character keystroke transmission, long ago, and I believe that PowWow also had that, though to be honest it's been so long I don't recall for sure.

I loved the character by character keystroke sending. It made you feel a lot more like you were interacting in real time with another person. Being able to see what the other person was typing kept you from wasting time writing stuff they'd already figured out, telling jokes they already knew, etc., and vice versa. Particularly fun mixed with alcohol.

I've been waiting since ICQ's demise/AOLification for key by key chatting.

Wave is designed as a collaboration tool, not as a public chat program, but people are trying to use it like a chat program or forum or a bunch of things it's not quite meant to be.

The public waves are probably the worst example of wave in use, the one's that will be showing it's real utility will be one's where the people involved know each other and are working on a common project. However, if you have no actual friends or colleagues to wave with, no one in your contacts you'd really expect to want to wave with you, the public waves are what's available.

For SL purposes, suppose you had a big group of people working together on a project as big as Burning Life or Caledon or some such. Wave is designed to let such groups of people with a common purpose work together. It's an alternative or addition to emailing each other, sharing stuff with Google Docs or setting up a project wiki or some such.

I found some comments from some SL users in a public SL oriented wave and edited their comments. That's a big difference from an IM program, you can edit each other's comments. I just added some silliness.

I added Takara to my contact list and sent a test "Ping". I've pinged FlipperPA and Intelligirl and a couple other folks I recognized, but no one has responded to my ping.

Oh, also for SL use, if you are one of the many people who want to have an SL identity that is distinct from and disconnected with your real world self, you should have or be prepared to create a Google account just for your SL avatar persona.

I have seen some SL people who have real-world id wave accounts saying , I'm AvatarFirstName AvatarLastName, which I know is disconcerting to some people, but it's easily avoidable by those who want to avoid that.

Here's a video about wave people might enjoy:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xcxF9oz9Cu0

It's not a tutorial. It's a remake of a scene from Pulp Fiction, done in Google Wave style.

I have some Wave invites in the event anyone wants them.

Note that Wave is a work in progress. There are a number of things missing, from my point of view, even for testing purposes, such as being able to display a picture that's on your Photobucket or Flicker account in a simple straightforward way. It's slow; waiting for a lengthy wave to appear may tax your patience beyond the breaking point. It's not just email, or an IM system, it allows you to EDIT EACH OTHER'S POSTS, and inject comments, questions, etc., in the body of other people's posts. If you use it just like an email or IM system, always replying at the end, you are going to find it worthwhile. If you don't have anyone you'd like to collaborate on something with in a non-public wave, it's not likely to be very interesting, because public waves appear to be either largely ignored, which is no fun, or they have too many people in the, making them very slow.

Some SL related things to do with Wave would be to collaborate on some Help info, or a list of favorite spots, in which people can insert there comments about the places in the list, or new places not already in the list, right in the body of the list, like you could do with a wiki, rather than adding their comments, questions, etc. at the bottom, as we do here in the forums.

I'll need an email address to send the invite nomination to. You could send me a forum PM if you want.

Yes, experimenting with bots, and looking into building a wave bot to integrate SL chat + mediastreams with wave.

I'll do a public search for second life related waves.

BTW Wave is often a lot faster in google chrome than in firefox (not even talking about IE).

Also still have a bunch of invites left. PM met if you want one, although an invite is not a guaranteed account.

(And the direct typing feedback is cool, but the 'edit/reply' menu on every change is wearing me out....)

Oh yeah, folks that want to experiment with the technical aspects of Wave, making bots, gadgets, etc. would be able to make good use of the invites. Wouldn't really need a team of co-workers or a bunch of social networking geek friends to enjoy Wave for that sort of thing.
