You can test it with a smaller mega prim - try a 256x256x256 and set your draw to 64. Set the prim in the center of the sim and walk/fly around. Once you get beyond the 64 meters along the x/y plane you will not see a thing.

Yes, I seen this behavior too, the distance between te center of the prim and your av is what counts, even when your cam is near the center of the prim but your av is outside the draw distance you still see nothing.

Weren't we supposed to get sim-specific WindLight settings for Estates by about now? And wouldn't that obviate the whole problem? (If this is a dumb question, sorry: I'm on the Mainland, so I get the sky God and the Lindens intended. :) )

Do they really intend to do this? It would be great, but they seem to be going in the opposite direction, giving the viewer more control.

I'll tell you that and more :)

To start a new thread, choose the subforum you want to post in (for example, "Resident Answers", look at the top of the screen, upper left, and push the light blue "New Thread" button.

Also, you may want to enable private messages, which is a good way to get answers to little questions like this. To do that, on the very top forum menu bar (dark blue), choose the leftmost button "User CP". Then choose "Edit Options" in the left-hand menu. You'll get to pick your time zone and graphics options as well as enable private messages.

And, welcome!

Well, that was supposed to be part of the deal, too: to have WindLight settings assets that could be saved and passed between avatars. The Estate settings thing would have only affected the default, much as how private sims have been able to define their own sun direction for a long time--people can still choose environment settings local to their viewers. Maybe somebody can ask Torley during his next office hour.

I did pop in and take a peek at this project. His sim has a few tiers to it all used for different purposes (note the 1100 for Z in his slurl). So I'm sure that's a major aspect of why he's seeking a prim dome. A universal environment setting would not suit the other areas.

For the OP: how large is the intended final playing field? You may need to div it up into 64x64 chunks and break the sky dome into sections and rez them at each appropriate loc. It will still be tricky.

I'd like to see a windlight option to force the owners settings on visitors and also perhaps make space at 4000m upwards always dark while lower altitudes can be clockset.

*bump*

Marine added custom windlight settings to the RL API yesterday so there is that "solution" now, or at least for those using the RLV viewer (which is mainly BDSM oriented).

Since it depends on scripted "llOwnerSay" commands (in case you're not familiar: object on the parcel talks to an RLV relay someone wears and passes on RLV commands to the viewer after - implicit or explicit - user consent) it can be a whole lot more versatile than what LL has planned.

Thanks. That's interesting. So, basically, one could make an island all sunny and pleasant for the dom/-mes, and perpetually dreary and horrid for the subs.

Or stop people walking around with midday settings in a perpetual night RP sim :)

This would undoubably cause problems Chaos. Unless you have an Open Sim anyway, whatever you do will have an impact on the grid in one way or another.
Not really. Prims only effect a sim and directly connected sims, and if there are no directly connected sims the only sim that will be effected by the megaprim is the one that it's in.

If it's phantom and not physical, precisely zero sims will be effected, it will simply be a visual effect.

One problem:

It will only be visible to people for whom the center of the prim is within draw distance. That's why the largest megaprim I use for a skybox is 100 meters, with the build inside it restricted to a 50 meter wide area... so you're never more than 25 meters from the center of the skybox prim. You COULD go up to 128 meters, but more than that and you'll have some people won't see the prim.

I missed this thread the first time around. Assuming you find a way to keep the dome visible, wouldn't using a smaller, repeatable texture solve the problem that was mentioned several times about the texture looking too grainy? Or am I missing something?

It would really be great if private estates had an option of replacing the sky texture like we can replace the ground textures. I've got a project in mind where it's going to be a necessity.

No, you can't do that.
