One of the problems I see with both men's shoes and women's too, sometimes, is that the two shoes in the pair are not mirror images of each other, but identical, and are only assigned the designation of left and right foot rather than actually being left and right shoes.

It looks very odd. Is there a technical reason for this?
Yeah, unlike normal 3d modeling, the only way to make a mirror image of a mesh in SL is with scripts.

Thanks, Kaimi. So that means a shoe creator would actually have to make two shoes (a right & a left) rather than just making one and copying it? Or use scripts?

How do the scripts work?

The Chucks at Urban Bomb Unit are my favourite shoe in SL. There are endless colour / fabric permutations, plus they are resized via menu. And the detail is exquisite.

I went and had a look at these earlier and they are nice but sadly, the one thing lacking is the ability to change the logo texture. Call me old-fashioned but I'm just not keen on wearing a pair of chucks plastered with "Pornstar" labels.

I think the technical reason is that the avatar feet are symmetrical. They just look the same. It's just easy to make one shoe for one foot and then copy it for the other foot. Some shoes have buckles that have to be on one side and those need to be added but shoes for the most part are symmetrical.

Yes I think so.

I only make shoes to throw in the package with some of my clothes as an "extra" so I'm not an expert on shoe making or anything. But I think how it works is you make two identical shoes then put the mirror script in each prim of one of them to make that shoe appear to mirror the other.

And Ceka says there is a tool for this, so maybe that makes it easier.
