Question: Were the 169 drivers supported in 1.19.1 before you tried the 174 beta?
Or did you mean 1.19.4.1?

Well if they were supported before and there were no changes to the viewer (unaware of any), you probably still have registry info from the 174 in there telling SL that the 169 isn't supported. Need to use DriverCleaner and purge that garbage so your 169 gets identified properly.

Well if the 169 now shows as unsupported in SL, or you're missing features you had in SL, then its definately leftover registry info from the 174. Just uninstalling the Nvidia 174 driver won't clean it out. You have to use a 3rd party debugger or completely hack the registry manually using regedit.

I use to get the same thing constantly with vista 32, and not just with SL but I could be browsing the web, or watching a dvd, or even 30 seconds after turning on the computer.

Ever since i upgraded to the latest beta drivers (174.90 or something like that, not at home to verify) I havn't had a single problem of the system locking up with black screen, tho twice i've had "driver recovered from serious error" and had to restart SL only. (in over a months period). I installed vista 64 and made sure i was using the latest beta drivers right from the start and i've had no problems at all *knock on wood* since then (2 weeks ago).

an update on this for people.

since switching from vista 64 to xp 32 SL runs like a charm on my 8800GTX with no freeze ups or crazy memory leaks that a restart every 6 hours can avoid.

SOO either nvidia is making the worst opengl drivers under vista ever or Microsoft is hindering opengl applications in vista. I beleive the nvidia being incompetant over the MS thing but one of them is true.

I did the same. Second Life has been good since I recently went from Vista 64 to XP 32.

Maybe a ram issue or probably a problem with the display driver. Try using a nvidia driver clean up tool and reinstalling the driver. Sl 1.9.1.(4) works fine with 680i, Q6600 @ 8800 gtx and with stock driver (not beta). Are you getting a error popup "time out and recovery" error message when screen turns black?

Didnt see anyone suggest this, but....

Are you using Onboard Audio or a seperate Sound Card?

2nd Question: Are the Sound Drivers up-to-date?

I had a sound looping issue with various things with a Sound Blaster Audigy till I updated the drivers.

Also, if you're using a Sound Blaster Audigy or X-Fi, they've been known to have issues with Vista.

SL freezes up on my pc
07-03-2008 02:02
First off and without wanting to repeat everything, below is a summary of what I am having to deal with.
I posted my responses in this thread here

/111/b5/264846/1.html

The post below is the main one where I was given suggestions.
So it seems that you have better knowledge on what I may need to do to solve my problem. As such I reposted this with an update, I forgot to mention the PSU I needed to get to run the card! Any help from people to overcome this problem would, or will be, gratefully accepted, even if my brother does work in the business, he knows I'd rather try to solve the problem myself without bugging him all the time.

From: someone

From: Robot Poultry
Technically, yes, nVidia could fix your issue with a driver or video card BIOS update. The actual fix would be to underclock the GPU and video RAM, which would therefore produce less heat.
In reality, nVidia will not fix your problem as it is simply a case of inadequate cooling. It could be a weak or malfunctioning fan on the video card, it could be dust buildup, it could be lack of airflow in the case, it could be the internal layout of the PC is obstructing airflow to the video card. There are a whole bunch of possibilities.

Possible fixes include an aftermarket video card heatsink and fan, extra (or higher airflow) chassis fans, organizing cabling in a different way, ensuring the PCI/PCI-e slot next to the video card is open, cleaning, etc, can all help. You may even wish to take the drastic step of underclocking the GPU and video RAM yourself, but it will lead to reduced performance.

Always install the nVidia driver if possible. Use the Microsoft driver as a last resort (and nVidia supports your GPU, so you don't need to use any last resorts).

Can't hurt to do this, but it's highly unlikely that nVidia will do anything to solve the issue (as there are many others using 8800's without overheating issues). It's up to you.

It is nothing to do with my pc at all. My brother works in the business. He has checked my pc out, which by the way is brand new, also it is functioning correctly. Everything is up to date, drivers etc. also the BIOS settings and all other such items are all 100% ok.

IT IS JUST IN SL THAT I GET THIS PROBLEM. NOWHERE ELSE AT ALL.

My brother has run all sorts of checks/tests and the graphics card is functioning properly. It only 'freezes' in SL and nowhere else.

The only way to recover from this is to turn the pc off and reboot then do a safe restore etc.Occasionally the system catches it and automatically sends a report to SL (I have it set that way ingame to do so) to report a 'crash'. There is nothing at all wrong with airflow either. nothing obstructing the card or fan etc. The layout is uncluttered and clear. The fan on the card works ok. Do you honestly think I'd spend over £200 on a card and use a 'duff' one? If it was faulty I'd be back like a shot to theshop where I bought it!

As I said everything works fine until I run it in SL!

Before I got this graphics card I never ever had problems like this. I'd have to run at lower resolutions because the graphics were 'built in' as it were. If you want to check out my pc fine... it's a Gateway GT5092B. I added more ram... taking it up to 4gig and added this graphics card, nothing else at all. Also I added a new power supply as well, an EZcool 'super silent' PSU (600watt) All the drivers, as I said are up to date and current. There is nothing else wrong, nothing clogging up the fan... no fluff/dust etc. The pc is totally clean.. I keep it that way like everything else in my house... CLEAN! The connections are all correctly seated/fitted etc. As I said my brother works in the computer industry and does this as a job. My own personal engineer as it were. This problem came to light on the NVidia forum it would seem, as others suffer from the same problem with this card as well. (NVidia GeForce 8800GTS with 320mb ram... it has a two year warranty on it too!) I spent good money on it, and it works fine, 100% OK with any other application/game etc and as I never had any problems with NVidia before I got this card I bought it, but now I am wondering.

My lappy, an old one by todays standards, bought in 2003 in the USA, a Gateway 450rog works fine! I had it built to order at the time as well with a larger hard drive, more memory, better graphics, and full wi-fi installed as well. Running on XP Pro and not a problem anywhere at all so I use this if/when I have to go in to SL, if/when my graphics 'freeze' on my pc.

As I said the problem only ever occurs when I use SL

So please don't tell me it is my pc, the layout, cables etc. dirt/fluff build up or anything else like that. I know you're only offering advice, and I appreciate it, but as I keep saying there is nothing wrong with my pc at all, with the exception of this little problem when I go into SL!

So any other ideas... anyone?

ps. would it help at all if I posted a DXdiag report for any help, assuming that you have either have the will, or desire, to wade through all the 'techno-babble' that it generates? Please do let me know if you want me to post the report and I will, as I said one of you bright people out there may be able to understand what it says and possibly point out the problem.

It's also been suggested that I use a different viewer. What that means I don't know, unless they mean the way I see/use SL? When I log in to SL it says this when I click on the numbers 1.19.1 (4) I assume therefore this is the viewer?

One thing that can happen is those Nvida drivers can become corrupt. The way to solve it if that is the problem, is to uninstall the existing Nvida drivers and then use a driver clean up tool to make sure all pieces of the nvidia driver is gone. Temporarily turn off your virus scanner. Then download the correct non beta driver from Nvidia. and reinstall it fresh. To be on the safe side uninstall and reinstall SL as well.

The 8800 cards can work fine with SL (when SL itself is working) Are you up to date with Microsoft Windows Updates? Make sure you don't receive a automatic update from Microsoft that puts an old driver back in, after you reinstall nvidia. That was a problem at one point with the nvidia drivers for the 8800.

ok its the memory leak problem that I have been dealing with too on my 64bit.
Its been good till last night was very bad.
I do set the affinity before logging in and that has helped alot.

....everything that can be done was done... by my brother... so please re-read the following, taken from my post about this....!

Just in case there is a possibility of that happening, which I doubt, I've posted a DXDiag report I just ran. So this will be a long post, So apologies in advance. So IF ANYONE can spot the possible problem please let me know, as mybrother is away from home at the moment and I know diddly about pc's,only what he has told me and what I've learned. I'mnot all that clued up on things like this, as likemost people, I just know how to use a pc, not how to 'tinker' with a pc's settings etc.
The DXDiag report follows this posting.
So I hope all you clever astute people out there maybe able to help.

The 175.16 drivers have been buggy for a number of people. (0011.7516 = 175.16)

You may want to consider downgrading to the 174.74 beta ones, or checking for newer ones - there's a 175.19 version available.

Here's the driver archive:

OK... Here's the rest of the DXDiag Report.

Name: NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GTS
Device ID: PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_0193&SUBSYS_042010DE&REV_A2\4&39B259C1&0&0008
Driver: C:\Windows\system32\DRIVERS\nvlddmkm.sys, 7.15.0011.7516 (English), 5/2/2008 22:46:00, 7460320 bytes

When "downgrading" make sure to uninstall, reboot, then run either driver sweeper or driver cleaner for "nVidia-Display." Personally, I do this for any nVidia driver change, YMMV.

RMA your new system/components.

I had to do it three times and all the components were replaced multiple times.

There is something wrong in your windows/SL/Drivers install or something wrong with hardware.
No one can just "test' a computer and pronounce it fine, when it is not working with an app that others can use with the same components. Sometimes when you RMA a new revision of a component replaces the one you had.

Many people went through all kinds of bitter hell with 8800 cards and drivers for a long time. Most people are over that. Most people had to reinstall and RMA their systems even mulitple times. It was not fun. Look in the archives on the Nvidia NZONE forum

Also Cyberlink had some strange issues causing machine issues, and finally had a update that was a pain to get. Only red flag I can see in that DxDiag.

You could post the last 30 or so lines from your second life log file, it's not impossible that it would provide useful information.

I suppose if there is nothing at all to change about your system hardware, peripherals, firmware updates, device drivers, etc., since they are all flawless in all respects, then your only remaining alternative is to modify the viewer code.

The "viewer" is the program you run on your computer that displays Second Life and communicates with the servers.

Linden Lab provide a "regular" viewer, the current version that is supposed to working reasonably well. They also offer a Release Candidate viewer, a test version which at some point will get promoted to being the "regular" viewer. Linden Lab also offers a Beta Grid viewer, possibly referred to at times as the Preview viewer, which connects to a test grid. Those three viewers are all available at the standard Linden Lab download site.

There are other viewers provided by third parties. The best known of these is the Nicolaz viewer. There's others. Any of them might just possibly work.

For purposes of testing, you can try all of them to see if there is any difference in behavior.

Is it just me or are there several Vista 64, 4 Gigs, 8800 lockup or crash threads around at the moment?

Thanks for all the advice given on here, it's definitely appreciated by me and I for one can assure you of that.
I'll try some of the suggestions, starting with the 'earlier' drivers and then a different viewer. *unistall/download and reinstall the 'new' drivers that is*. Also any suggestion as to what viewer would be better to use? I currently use this one. >>>>>> 1.19.1 (4)
I assume that I have to uninstall SL to do this do I, or can I just load an earlier version, if so where do I find it in SL? The other thing is I assume that I won't I lose anything from my inventory, as I guess that as that is stored on the SL side I'm safe on that then.
Hopefully I can get this resolved over the next day or so too.

Just to add to the comment about NVidia cards on here... Yes there do seem to be more and more people posting requests for help regarding these too. Seems to be some of the same type too. 8800GTS cards that is, and also a few other types as well. So it would appear that there is a common fault with the card in SL then, or so it would appear to look that way at the current time.

For alternate viewers I'd start with both Linden Lab's Release Candidate and the Beta Grid client.

Both the Release Candidate and the Beta Grid client can be installed alongside the regular viewer. They are intended to be able to live together in peace. Of course, intent and result don't always match. To start with, I'd assume they are properly isolated from each other until proven otherwise.

These are both available at secondlife.com/download .

The reason to start with these viewers is not so much that they are likely to help but that installing them is very easy.

The Beta Grid client, as mentioned, connects to a test grid, so it's not a viewer you'd normally expect to keep for using in the main grid. If you use the Beta Grid client and it doesn't ever lock up, that tells you something. I'm not sure exactly what it tells you, but it would be important.

There's page in Second Life wiki on alternate viewers. I just found it in an instant by typing the phrase "second life wiki alternate viewers " into Google. It's at http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Alternate_viewers .

I always have all the Linden viewers, the regular, release candidate, and beta grid viewers installed on my computer all the time. I have installed the Nicolaz viewer, but I don't find that it actually solves the problems I want solved, such as gray textures for an excessive amount of time, so I don't make any effort to stay current on it. There are several different versions of the Nicolaz viewers.

You can also install some earlier versions of the Linden Lab viewers. In order to make them work, and not insist on upgrading to the current version, you may have to modify the shortcut used to start the program, adding a "Channel" argument to the shortcut's target field. Putting "channel" into the Second Life Wiki's search engine yields http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Channel_and_Version_Requirements as the place to find out how to use the channel directive when using alternate viewers.

New SL Viewer - Version Number: 1.20.15.92456
07-25-2008 06:46
Just to let you know I'm now using the new SL Viewer (Version Number: 1.20.15.92456)
I posted this elsewhere too, as others were also having similar problems with this graphics card as well.
The upshot is this:

So far it appears to work for me.. not had a freeze/graphics lock up at all last night. I even ran my card on SL's 'Ultra' setting... oh my.......... I breezed through SL! Alright I was on my Island some of the time, only a few people there but I jumped to a few places that I normally go to, some of them casue me problems (I froze up previously) and this time nothing!!
I stayed in them for around 15-20 mins, previously I'd have frozen by then! I'll try it out again later on after I am back from work.
Lets hope this works ok and things have been sorted.

Below is the list of SL Requirements to run SL now.

Your computer must meet these REQUIREMENTS, or you may not be able to successfully participate in Second Life.

So I hope it works for all you people that had the same problem(s) as I had, or similar.
I'm about to go into SL again now, back from work, and as the above post was originally posted yesterday then I'm about to see how well it works at this time of day. Nearly 3pm here in the UK. Will come back later on and give a comment or three vis-a-vis a post on here to tell you if I have had any problems (or not). *touches wood to make sure things are all A OK! :)
