tech support forum gets no activity so i am gonna ask here.
here's my system.
680i, 8800 gtx, 4gb ram, vista 64.

here's my symptoms
occasionally in SL my computer screen will turn black and te sound will loop and nothing will work until i reset the computer.

tried to fix so far:
ran memtest, nop issues, just ordered a 2X2 set of ram to try instead of 1x4 set to see if this helps.
i've reseated everything
i've cranked all fans to 100%
temps are fine

only thing i can think of is my 8800gtx is causing computer freezes if the memory fix doesn't work. i know i have read about similiar stuff happening on people before but not one ever gives an answer on the cause.

What sound loops? Sounds in SL, or stuff outside of SL, like Youtube or whatever?

anysound playing , like all it can do is playback the last 1 second of sound.
its not the sound thats the issue as the same thing happens using mb sound or x-fi hardware.

the core issue is all input and output stops working. g15 lcd doesnt update or anything when it freezes.

Check your power supply, that sounds more like a hardware problem. the 8800GTX draws lot of power, you need at least a 450-500W power supply.

I run SL with a 8800GT and Vista 64 with no problems.

I'm in the same canoe. :(

Which CPU do you have?

My system:

Intel Q6600 CPU.
Asus P5N-T Deluxe 780i motherboard
2x8800 GTX (SLI)
4 Gig of ram (4x1)
Windows Vista Ultimate 64

Rather than the screen turn black, my whole system just freezes and I have to reset it. I can sometimes manage to play other games (platforms!) without crashing. But SL is by far the worst. It nearly always crashes.

I've done some searchiing on the net and some say it's Vista and 4 Gig of ram. Some say it's compatibility issues with the Q6600 CPU and my motherboard. and others say it's aliens secretly trying to hold back human progress by sending intense beams of radiation at my computer. I tried surrounding it in tin foil but it's not working :(

I have this same problem running vista.. it happened from day one and still happens six months on. Only happens when i am running SL, but happens always when i boot up SL and also when I quit, sometimes when I am not doing anything much inworld, often when I teleport.

Sound in other applications (radio in my case) loops in about a 5 second loop, lasts for about 1 or 2 minutes, sometimes more, but clears by itself, or if i open task manager sometimes, but its hard to tell if its just coming back by itself or as a result of trying to open task manager.

Everything freezes, 100 percent CPU usage light comes on the top of my pc... cant use mouse, keyboard or anything.

It seems to be worse since the new viewer, but its hard to quantify.

Any suggestions gratefully received, glad to know I am not alone

My computer used to do this until I bought a desk fan and pointed it straight into the case. Of course, that was back in the summer in Arizona, in an un-air-conditioned house.

You might try shutting down extraneous programs like Skype or iTunes. Do a Ctrl-Alt-Del to make sure they don't have sneaky stuff running in the background.

its not power at all. got a great ps that should handle sli 8800gtx.
my cpu is the 6700 core 2 duo.

tonight i am formatting to xp and see what happens. the lock ups cant be timed or anything and this is one of the reasons i can't place any logic on it heh.

Giving Xp a try would be a good start IMO. There's been talk on some of the tech forums about similar issues surrounding dual and quad core CPU's under Vista. I think it has something to do with the way vista handles the multicore driver, but at this point its all guesswork.

I am running Vista 64 on a year old AMD Processor 4GB or RAM, Nvidia 7900 Video card, and a RAID 5 set up. I have a pretty large PSU (more than 800W) and the only trouble I have is a Video Card Driver crash shortly after I start SL.. (It usually also crashes the SL client) after that crash I am good for a few hours.

Edit:I was thinking about upgrading to an 8800 GTX... but maybe I'll hold off..

Welcome to the unending hell that is the P5N-T Deluxe. I've been having similar problems since the day I got my new computer. I've found that it happens a lot less often if I keep my system overclocked by 5% (I have a Q9650). If I run it at stock speeds I get constant IRQL Not Less or Equal bsods. I get quite a few application failures now but they rarely bring the whole system down. Oddly, SL doesn't crash on me, but I haven't spent a lot of time in world in the past couple of months.

I don't get the sound loop freezes often. When it happens, one of my two monitors will go black, the system freezes and I have to reboot with the reset button. I keep hoping that some day I'll manage to get this system stable, but it hasn't happened yet. My Vista reliability score is a whopping 3.39. Many many p5N-T owners have been suffering the same BS, especially those with 6600s, but bios 1001 seems to have fixed most of it for most people.

This sounds similar to my problem. I find that in most games if I can survive 10 minutes without crashing then I'm fine. If my system crashes then it tends to occur early on or not at all. But then when I finally exit a game and later start up another game then I'm back in the potential Crash Zone again.

This doesn't really apply to SL though. SL can crash anytime. Usually when teleporting or opening Search. Nearly always on a transitional stage. This tends to make me scared of doing anything. I log into SL and just stare at the world afraid to sneeze.

Ha! Yeah, I read on a forum that overclocking seems to be the key to stability for this motherboard. Sounds plain crazy to me!.

I've flashed to BIOS 1001. Still not much better really :(

I used to have this problem.. not crashes so much but client disconnects. They went away when I replaced my router and cable modem.

i've learned to never buy a motherboard with nvidia chipset on it after dealing with the 680i and the SATA issues it had.

Maybe it is the motherboard, I have a similar computer (E8400 duo core, 8 gigs ram GT8800, Vista 64) but have an Asus motherboard with a intel P35 express chipset and have never had the problems discribed here.

I think this'll be my last nvidia motherboard.

hi guys.

Look at the Nvidia driver you have loaded i bet its 169 the current mainstream driver.

I was getting all sorts of nasty lockups and crashes random freezing.. and mini freezes every minute or so running the 1.20 candidate.

- i have an 8500GT ( i know low end card!)

Anyway it was suggested I try the 174 beta driver available here:

http://www.nvidia.com/Download/Find.aspx?lang=en-us

All sorted!! It now works perfectly

might be worth a try.

Cheers Mya

update so far.
btw i love vista, i miss it already, i wish the drivers were upto par but they aren't i guess.

I formatted to xp pro.
SL runs allot smoother to me, FPS seems a bit faster but its smoother not as stuttery as vista could be with it.
I did not crash at all last night. no memory leak crashes either like vista/nvidia would.
i still don't know if the whole lockup issue is gone or not as its premature for that decision.

I'm not ready to swear off nVidia boards myself. Unless there's more to the story I don't know, the problem Trolane mentioned, while certainly serious, only affected a small percentage of boards from the first release, and was repaired via software 2 years ago. If I understand the history correctly, nVidia was very responsive to the situation. They were able to duplicate the problem in their lab, diagnose it, and get the patch out the door, quickly.

What I've learned from this problem, and others, is that pretty much all hardware designers/manufacturers have got issues. I think rather than saying "I'm not gonna buy any more _____ brand ______'s", a smarter way to look at it is "I'm not gonna buy any piece of hardware that is in its first release batch, from ANY manufacturer or designer". Wait a few months first to let the bugs get worked out, then buy.

Incidentally, the 680i board that I originally had in my machine was a first batch'er, and it did turn out to be defective. It was replaced under warranty, and I've had no problems since.

All i know is when i had intel chipset motherboards i didn't have issues like i had when i went to nvidia for a MB. I had thought of using SLI is only reason i went but the 8800GTX could power everything at 1920x1200 just fine for me except crysis but even that was playable to me.

I have been having just about all of these issues listed.

I of course use the RC2 viewer for Second Life, and have crashed every 1-20 minutes.
I run Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 & a 8800GTS 320mb card, will try out the new drivers and post results. I have found this only happens with OpenGL program's I use, none of my Direct X games have these problems.

Peace,
