I use wireless on my otherwise woefully under powered laptop. I am running a D-Link Wireless N PCMCIA Nic, to a Linksys Wireless G router (I am less than a meter and a half away though.) that then links at 10/100 to a Gigabit LAN network and out to a T1 line. Like my old Compaq Evo N1000c, it is bullet proof.

I'm on wireless and I've not noticed any problems with stability as long as I'm sitting.

"Who here uses a wireless when in SL?"

Going totally off-topic.....

In Ireland (at least) the old folk refer to a radio receiver as "The Wireless".
I had a grand-aunt who not only referred to it as "The Wireless", but only listened to the first of three channels broadcast by the what used to be the monopoly national broadcasting organisation. Apparently she used to say "Turn on 'Our Own' " - as opposed to the nasty British Radio 4 which was receivable on something called the Long Wave. (She lived in revolutionary times)

I'm sorry for the OT, but someone asked about a wireless.
A lot of people use The Wireless in SL, and I understand that there can be issues with availability of channels.
/me wonders which channel my grand-aunt would call "Our Own"

PS: I think that I may have to go wireless in the near future, so I'm interested in the (possibly) real question "Who here uses a wireless when in SL?"

I run with a wireless connection all the time, so I guess I can't compare it to a wired connection. I run fine and sometimes run two clients at once to test permissions or adjust poseballs and don't really have any trouble. I was in a hotel once where the wireless signal was weak, and SL was impossible.

I tried two different wireless cards in my desktop and had problems with loosing the connection when playing SL. I know use it wired with the same router and it works absolutely fine.

My laptop works fine with SL wireless.

There are combinations of routers and wireless network cards that don't work well with SL.

I use wireless pretty much all of the time connecting to SL. Stability is no better or no worse, but network speed can sometimes be an issue.

One of the problems with using a wireless network is all the other devices out there. Wireless NIC, phone, mouse, keyboard, web cam, two way radios, game controlers ... the list goes on. They all use a limited frequency range. The more urban your environment the more trash you have to contend with.

Any network connection is only as fast as it's slowest link. So, with a good, clean signal, the wireless should work as well as a cable for playing SL.

I do

With no problems :)
I suspect that there has been some confusion between wireless local area networks [WLAN] and wireless internet service providers [WISPs]. The SL system requirements page has a line "Second Life is not compatible with dial-up internet, satellite internet, and some wireless internet services". The satellite and wireless services quoted above [AFAIK] refers to WISPs, some of which have had very restricted upstream speeds, so they would likely cause problems with SL, and many other apps.
A properly configured home WLAN i.e. a cable or DSL terminating unit, containing or attached to a wifi router, should give you no problems

I use WLAN all the time, I have *never* been disconnected due to that. (Only when sitting far away in the garden with the laptop...) I don't have issues with that at all.

Only use wireless throughout our home. No probs at all except for an occasional disconnection but don't think I have as many probs as others seem to say they have.

My husband and I use a wireless router in our home, since I definitely didn't want wires across floors or walls. I don't think it's increased any SL problems. Since his computer is the one actually connected to the cable modem and into the router, he receives the streams of music or video in SL before I do, but otherwise, that's it. Every once in a while, it acts up as far my computer connecting to the internet, but then we usually find that the antennae in the back has somehow been moved. Straightening that out usually resolves the connection problem. I might not be using the correct terms for everything since I'm certainly NOT the technical one in our family. I leave that stuff up to my hubby.

It took me three goes before i realised what the OP question was!!
First thought - 'must mean listening to an external radio whilst playing', then I thought, 'does he mean streaming radio?'. THEN I released!! (had my Doh-head on I guess).

Anyway, I use wireless all the time, no problems seem to result from it!

I use both IEEE 802.11g wireless LAN (54 Mbit/sec) and a 100Base-TX Ethernet over twisted pair cable hardwired into a router (100Mbit/sec), accessing the internet by a fiber-optics connection. There is an extremely noticeable difference, while using the same laptop with each connection. I have not measured the exact difference, but I avoid using the wireless connection unless I have to do so, to move around the house. The ultimate bandwidth available is one reason, but there's also attenuation and interference to deal with, as well as other problems. The WLAN connection is useable for most things, don't get me wrong, and never drops out on me, it's just comparitively clunky, and performance will vary depend on your equipment and environment.

Try this test: connect to your wireless access point (WAP) by using a CAT 5 cable (cheap and available in any electronics store). There should be some open ports on the back of the WAP for Ethernet connections, and a network interface card (NIC) somewhere in your computer (these look like phone jack outlets, btw). See which kind of connection works best for you.

Truth be told, you'll never reach the upper limits of your available bandwidth with these kinds of connections while running SL--you almost have to fine-tune your CPU, GPU and network connection to get the optimal performance for whatever situation your facing in SL.

I do. Linksys WRT54GL with HyperWRT installed for the router, and MacBook Pro for the client. Extremely stable with Nicholas BE-s.

I'm pretty happy with my bandwidth, but then i have a very fast ADSL line (16,000, and the attenuation still lets me get a consistent 13,000 through WLAN. At work, I am connected with a CAT5 cable to our university LAN, which is ultra fast and because I am an employee, mine isn't throttled at all, but the experience in SL is still the same as with my WLAN at home.
I should stress my WLAn connection is *always* at 54 MBit, i.e. there's no interference at all between router/modem and computer.

My husband visits SL on his wireless lap top (HP with nVidea graphics card) and crashed less than I do with my hardwire internet.

So it can be done successfully.

However, my old MAC laptop can't really run SL that way at all.

I use wireless.. I didn't know it was supposed to be any slower than a physical connection.
