hmmm
for us it was

5318008

It was always a dirty joke to do 319009 or 318008 because you feel with one hand and have a good time with the other (That was 100% PG! please no flak)

5318008 is of course still the original!

Leet Speak was started on the calculator long long ago "319009" any one care to take that one on?
Oh boy, I remember that one, but as Claire said, for us in the UK it was "5318008".

As to the use of l33t, it bugs me in general, but it bugs me most when used in an historical roleplay area. Then again, anachronisms in general bug me in historical roleplay areas. If I'm playing a medieval-era RP character, it tells me the person I'm roleplaying with isn't even really trying very hard when they use words like, "cool", "OK" and "sure". I'm not expecting "thee" and "thou" and all that from everyone around me, but anachronisms all-but orbit me out of the RP mood whenever I come across them. I always try to make an effort to give any of my RP partners a good RP session, but when that effort isn't returned in even the slightest way, it feels rude to me. If you're not going to bother to bring the same thought and effort into your RP as I do, then I'm afraid I'm not going to bother to seek you out for another RP session in the future.

LMAO! I love this Forum. :)

From: SuezanneC Baskerville
Someone noticed that kids could hear ultrasonic sounds that adults couldn't, and that ultrasonic sounds could in fact cause kids pain while going unnoticed by adults.

This lead to businesses using ultrasonic soundmakers to keep teens from loitering outside the place of business.

Somewhere in roughly the same time frame, cellphone rings too high pitched for adults to hear began to be used by kids.

I think that kids are now using "ultrasonic to old folks" sounds to communicate in code.

I guess us old folks will need to get some kind of frequency shifting function added to our hearing aids.

Exactly. I thought even kids did it just to be funny/goofy/silly anyway? "133T SP34K" is so old now, that this News segment might as well have been on: "The threat Elvis Presley & his pelvis pose to our children"

Please no...oops too late.

here's a thought for you though, we have our l33t language, with abreviations like brb and lol etc. but it is all in English. Do the French, Spanish, Japanese etc have their own version of l33t speak, with similar abbreviations? Or is it just english speakers who have dumbed it down for the lazy of us? i know there are people on the forums who speak these languages....just think it would be interesting to know.

Whoa...that's kinda heavy & the liquor shop around the corner is closed...brain shutting down...

L337 in small doses is fine. It's when, like anything, over used it becomes an annoyance.

Ya know, there's actually a genetic trait that causes that kind of hearing range.

did you know that it never really goes away either? I'm 25 and I can still hear the high pitch whine of those electronic dog trainers, the button ya hit to punish them. I hear that clearly and dog whistles faintly.

My own MOTHER used to be called home by HER mother using a dog whistle .... No joke.

This reminds me.A year or so ago I got a sms from my old mum, basically this 1337 gibberish.
Me thinking she'd had a stroke or something caught the next bus across town to see what was the matter.
Mum was fine pottering around the garden,in fact looking quite surprised the way I burst in.
When I asked her what it was about she said it was just a quuick message to say that Sunday lunch would be slightly earlier that weekend and that my brother would give me a lift o the way down.
I just stood there with my mouth agape eventually asking where she'd learned that?
Her reply . "Everyone uses that now,it's easier"
I could have fallen over :)

Geeze, it's not that hard to figure out, since I used to '1134" on my calculator in high school on a regular basis.

*headdesks* It's only when someone uses leet to pwn the nets and only succeeds in actually misspelling every freaking word that it becomes truly entertaining. I love poking at them for it.

I have seen French speakers apparently using abbreviations similar to brb, lol, etc., - svp for s'il vous plait (please) for example. And I have seen people who were typing in other languages use short groups of consonants that looked to be the same sort of thing, but not known enough of the language to work out what it might be. (How sad do I have to be to try and read chat in languages I don't speak?)

On the forums I try to use 'correct' grammar and traditional spelling.

But in-world, in chat or IMs I often use abbreviations like U, dint, tho etc. Gradually these will find their way into written language. Language changes, otherwise we'd not print things like won't or can't.

I make no apologies for shortening words in chat, I see nothing wrong with it as long as it's logical and understandable..

If kids ever start talking like that I'm going to be very worried.

I think a lot of people are using texting shorthand nowadays (like CU L8R) which is not like 133t speak at all. They're both annoying though.

Spend some time on a World of Warcraft server.

It is like a whole new language.

I once had someone message me the following (I wouldn't give him gold, if you are wondering what provoked it)

'U r a horsis as beach'

Well, he did spell one word correctly - 'a', lol

I asked him what country he was from, what was his first language. His reply...

'Im frum california u beach'

Perhaps the 'u' stands for 'upper', do you think? *wink*
