Once again takin advantage while there's no Mods :P

Supposedly some Cops have the job of monitoring "leet speak" because "it leaves parents in the dark and could be dangerous".

Teenagers talking in code?! It's the end of the world!

In the 60's and 70's my parents didn't grok a word my buds and I were rapping, couldn't get into our thing, weren't hip to our threads, wouldn't groove to our noise, man. Dig?

I've seen profiles that state: if you talk like an aol chat room reject it will not be with me.

And one that referred the same way to names (she wasn't a fan of numbers in your name or just random gibberish slapped together)

I don't think its a threat,
there are sites that do English to 1337 translations,
but I think it a GREAT way to do age verification!! at least mental age....

Personally, I'm fine with a little 13375p34k, but not much.

My Domina uses 'u' and a couple other things alot, and it annoys me a tadbit, but I get past it. If someone is using numbers instead of letters, I ignore them, and if someone has numers in their name, I treat them as if they don't care about their SL. They didn't have the effort to think of an actual name, so I don't have the effort to treat them with as much respect as some others.

Of course, with the name thing, if they prove themselves not just some slob, I respect them just as much as anyone else.

Kids will always find ways to distance themselves from their uncool parents. It's a fact of life. :-)

That's a very good way to put it, and now I know why we still haven't seen the promised blog entry...

...the Lindens are still waiting for their shipment of Lie-agra to come in to firm up their flaccid reasoning.

Heh I was messing with you. Generally I don't like tons of shortcuts in messages. Even so, I use stuff like "How r u ?" a lot in chat -- especially if I have 6 IM windows open. :P

That's because it is a poser.

Code? Like Ep op orp ah-ah

Nah, leet speak is just someone trying to look cool. Someone else has to take offense. It's the nature of the world. ISLTTMMWTC.

Problem is, a lot of the people who use it to excess aren't kids anymore.

I know but there was still a question to be answered :D

I can honestly say I never intentionally use any form of shorthand or leetspeak in SL. I do in America's Army, purely because speed in messages really does matter.

So I'm a bit biased ^_^

Thats just like the adults on Myspace ...

They are in denial that they are too old to be cool anymore.

Someone noticed that kids could hear ultrasonic sounds that adults couldn't, and that ultrasonic sounds could in fact cause kids pain while going unnoticed by adults.

This lead to businesses using ultrasonic soundmakers to keep teens from loitering outside the place of business.

Somewhere in roughly the same time frame, cellphone rings too high pitched for adults to hear began to be used by kids.

I think that kids are now using "ultrasonic to old folks" sounds to communicate in code.

I guess us old folks will need to get some kind of frequency shifting function added to our hearing aids.

using mild l33t speak doesn't annoy me too much...i.e. How r u 2day?
but when people start sticking in numbers instead of letters it really annoys me...I have trouble enough trying to keep up with chat without having to work out wth this randomer is trying to say to me. I don't think anything less of the person using leet, but I can get pretty short with them.
I don't really use 'u' and '2day' in SL. i do, however, drop my g's a lot, and use my own little language. I'm sure it annoys people to death, but its a hard habit to break.
i do use a certain amount of l33t in Ims and text messages outside of SL though. Because my friends do, and our conversations go super-fast. We don't go too far with it though, replacing everything with numbers is going a bit too far I think.

I don't see it as a threat exactly. Every generation has had it's own youth language, words that the rents aren't going to understand. L33t is just another one of those, and there are places you can 'translate' into english. But i suppose as with anything, it can be and will be used in bad ways.

here's a thought for you though, we have our l33t language, with abreviations like brb and lol etc. but it is all in English. Do the French, Spanish, Japanese etc have their own version of l33t speak, with similar abbreviations? Or is it just english speakers who have dumbed it down for the lazy of us? i know there are people on the forums who speak these languages....just think it would be interesting to know.
