editied 2007/10/11: Apologies! I confused Stylee with somebody else when I said:

Hey Stylee, if you're really selling mainland for L$50-$60/sqm like you told me, you should be so awash in cash that you shouldn't have any problem paying VAT.

which was what I originally posted.

At 50 - 60$ /sqm, Stylee can afford to pay Brazil's VAT also.

That's the only thing I could do to protect myself from false charging.

Well they didn't charge me VAT yesterday, the bill said it would be charged VAT but the actual charge didn't include VAT. The next one will but I know that's the case.

Hmmm in my account page it shows that I have a credit in my dollar balance, which works out as the same amount for the Vat I paid in my recent billing cycle... sorry if that has already been posted, but does this mean they are giving out refunds?

I tiered right down before the vat came into place.. I just had no need for mainland, and then deeded my 512 "freebie amount" with a premium account to the cartel.. But I did have a couple of days overlap which I knew I would would be billed for, but it looks like they have given me the vat back..?!

So now what am I going to whinge about? It annoys me when I cant rant and moan about LL ;)

You didn't. I'm sorry-- I made a mistake. it was somebody else who claimed that. My apologies.

What is a VAT? I hope I am not paying for one without knowing what it is.

Shhhh Susie, those threads have finally died. To speak of them might bring their unholy bodies back to life.

No big deal but thanks. I found a VAT in my inventory and sold it for big bucks!

well i just raised a support ticket demanding a refundo f my vat bill taken on th 4th october as i was only made aware of it 2 days before by chance, and no vat ref number has been provided by LL so basicaly they are braking eu law.

reckon ill get a refund?

No. Except if this if a payment for a service you enjoyed before official notification of the price increase.

1. You always paid VAT on your tier, except it was included in tier fee in the past. (Or in LL wording, it was absorbed in their costs.) Which makes the current VAT payment nothing more than a price increase on the LL delivered service.
2. According to the EULA, LL has the right to unilaterally increase prices on their services. As long as they give notice of this in a public statement. (They did). They're not obligated to notify you personally, although it's common usage to do so. LL has apologized for the late notification, but it's perfectly legal.
3. After a price increase, you should have the option to cancel your contract with Linden Lab, according to EU law. You have this option.
4. They do NOT have the option to retroactively increase prices on service according to EU law. If they charged you a higher price for services you bought, before public notification, this is illegal. (This is the 'mainland' thing Zee talked about. It's simply illegal to retroactively increase prices before official notification.)

Your legal options to not pay VAT are:
1. Formalize your business with the EU. Get a VAT registration and do the work. If you're not doing this, than you're apparently not running a real business. And you'll be treated by EU as a consumer.
2. Cancel your contract with LL. If you find their services too expensive, you simply have the right as a consumer to not use them.
3. Move out of the EU. This is a EU law, not a LL policy.
