Is it possible to squat on someone else's land by rezzing a house on a raised platform? I just noticed this estate has a house about 300 meters in the air and it is not a residential region and the owner of the house is not a member of any of the estate's residential groups either. Do the prims affect sim efficiency/performance?

It's possible until you get caught. The prims count against the land that they are over, just like they were at ground level. If they aren't authorized to be there, the land owner can return them all with the click of a button on the About Land window.

Dagmar, it's very funny because I was considering asking the same thing. There appears to be several squatters on a large parcel next to my store that is owned by a certain wealthy woman we all know. I wasn't sure about them until two days ago when I was flying and happened to stop near their platform. They sent some type of particle ray at me and then IM'd me and told me that I need to go away "NOW". When I IM'd back that I was on my own property they responded they don't know much English and were gone within 30 minutes.
There are still others who appear to be squatting there and I debate whether to inform the land owner or leave them alone since they haven't bother me.
Is this a regular SL phenomenon? I haven't heard of it.

Sure it is possible. It is also theft if the person wasn't invited.

Well - theft involves somebody actually stealing something. If you can just boot them off anytime you want it's more trespassing than theft, but we're splitting hairs. The worst that can happen is the land owner shows up and kicks them off. Squatting on someone elses' land is pretty low in my opinion, but people do a lot worse in SL. If they are causing a disturbance, I would IM the landowner immediately and AR them for the disturbance. If they aren't, heck, I might IM the owner anyway. I'd be more likely to go meet them and see if I could either talk some sense into them or at least determine if they were big enough idiots to warrant IMing the landowner.
Nah. I'd just Im the landowner. If she doesn't care and they are minding their own business, then I don't care.

unless they`d annoy me, i`d leave them be if land owners don`t care about securing their land, who cares if they don`t bother you look at it this way, would you rather have some squatters next door that live in peace, an arse land owner who builds huge walls on borders or some random idiot creating a junkyard? somehow, i guess you`ll decide to live with the squatters till they get on your nerves or the land owner returns and boots them

Wisdom from these posters. Evict the other person's squatters, and who knows what will follow them?

Then to have the nerve to be firing particles at me and telling me to go away is pretty annoying. But it looks like they are gone. They packed up their house and vanished quickly leaving only the temp rez sky platform behind. If they come back, I'll probably notify the landowner. As for the rest of the squatters, they haven't bothered me at all. As long as it stays that way, you are correct, it's the owners issue for leaving their land unsecured.

Remember the other day? Some guy was busy building a nightclub on my sim!
I guess they just move in expecting that you're not going to either notice the missing prims, or hoping that you're going to be offline awhile.

Sorry for not being of any help, but when I read the title, it made me think of Jim Carrey and what he was doing on his neighbor's lawn in "Me, myself & Irene".. *sneaks silently back into the shad0wz*

I had some people living in my pavilion for a while. They probably thought it was unused as I would sneak away every time I saw them. I just thought it was funny. Some of the situations are not funny, however, so there's no one way to react.

well on the mainland i know I have 'squated' on several 512 plots that were filling up with junk. Filling them up with trees or good looking random stuff and trying ot hide all the plywood cubes and crashed vehicles. I also know some people who have a little hide away on plots like that because no one is using it. If the plot is abandoned I don't see the harm in squating. if someone is living there then let them kick the squaters out and turn on autoreturn.

I had a 'skyfield' above Berbera for several months. It was a disused sim left on open build and it ended up looking like a sandbox with people leaving junk. Eventually it got cleared, which is fair enough!

Most people who know how to, leave autoreturn turned on as it is the ultimate defence against litter. They make a group so their friends things dont get returned.
I expect most of the places you could squatt are on newbie premium account holders land before they learn the land tools and the power they have.

Does autoreturn work if the object is on a platform suspended 300 meters in the air?

I bought some land and the next day found it covered with little signs and advertisements. I had forgotten to turn off the permission.
I returned all the junk.

Not long ago, I had sold my land, and the ppl didn't give me a chance to get my stuff out, just returned it, and I had no where to place it to get my stuff out of the building, so I found an empty lot that didn't have autoreturn, and I set down the building to run in and get my stuff and then I deleted my building as soon as I was done...lol
Does that count? LOL

Just my two and a half cents...but I would boot them. A swift kick in the a$$....WAHPOW!!! Git outta heeeeerrrre! Seriously though, I would invite them to stay if they agreed to pay a portion of my tiers because they are technically on the property I'm paying for........I believe it's up to 500 meters? I think........anyway..........if they agreed to that and also agreed that if I were to decide to use that space for a building platform or skybox, they would leave........then I might leave them alone. Perhaps.........

In fact, the only reason I'd probably wait is until they were in the middle of having sex and then I'd return all their items to their inventory.
