From: Darien Caldwell Well, i'd like to know where. I read the blog, the forums, the SL scripters list, the SL Dev list, and even manage to make it to a few Office Hours. I haven't heard a peep about this from any of those source. (no pun intended ) It was mentioned on the blog when announcing the upcoming server update. They've since edited the blog entry with status updates. But somewhere hidden among all those words you can still see the original notice: From: someone * Introduced automatic sound playback throttling for scripts. (Should not affect existing well-behaved content, but should help reduce specific instances of griefing.)

I mean, notice, like weeks or months in advance that it was coming. I have since done some inquiries in world from top secret sources I can't reveal, and it seems it was to stop an exploit which was recently floated around by a certain weapons scripter that loves creating new ways to break stuff. So It may be that LL didn't mention anything to avoid spreading the exploit. In all fairness though, I think they should have tested it more beforehand.

the fact that I'm slowly beginning to realize, is that the Lindens, and the developer geeks who feed them code patches, don't really USE the real SL.
These are people who, for the most part, experience SL in the sandboxes, and more often, in the BETA sandboxes. They don't experience the same world that WE experience, and their idea of what is "normal use" versus what is "abuse" is skewed by that.
We saw this with the undesirable "mute" button on llGiveInventory dialogs.. The same mute button that causes MOST delivery failures inworld since they added it. We saw this with the communicate window that works great for 5 conversations, but DOESN'T work well for people who track 10 or more at a time. We saw this with Cones of context (as an example) we see this repeatedly with them screwing up the tools that builders use everyday. We saw this when they broke the hugs, and jetpacks, and water toys.. and we're seeing it again with sound.
They experience a rarified section of the uses of SL. These aren't people who go sailing. These aren't people who go for long flights, exploring SL, these aren't people who adventure and receive dozens of notecards a day.. these aren't people who "hug".
Because they're not testing their changes against the things WE use, their changes often times have far reaching, disrucptive effects to those of us who aren't programmers.
Reactive patches that are deployed to "stop" griefer weapons... tend to hurt us all far more than the original problem. (tried sending a folder of textures lately? Had customers muting your notecard givers?
