"Too many sound system requests"

I'm getting this script error message in my sim today....for the first time. I do have a fair number of looping sounds as there's a nature area and a tech area, both of which have their unique sounds.

"Too many sound system requests."

I have a fair number, but I wouldn't say excessive considering it's a whole sim. However, if we assume I do have too many, what I don't understand is why now? I've not added any more sounds to the sim, and it's been fine up until today.

Is this an SL problem, has anyone else come across this problem today for the first time?

From http://blog.secondlife.com/2008/05/27/second-life-122-server-update-tue-527-thu-529/

From: Joshua Linden
Issues with 1.22:
- We are receiving scattered reports that the new sound throttling (mentioned below) is impacting content. This is not intended behavior.
- We are also receiving reports that “flight assist” scripts are not functioning as before (motion continues after keys released, and so forth). This is not intended behavior.
- We are currently investigating and evaluating our options; it is likely that we’ll need to adjust the code (or revert to a previous version) and may need to re-restart the affected regions. We’ll post more details when available.
.
.

Could it be this?

It's a new change in the 1.22 server, it's supposed to be an anti-griefing measure.

Details in http://blog.secondlife.com/2008/05/27/second-life-122-server-update-tue-527-thu-529/

So apparently those objects of yours are not though by the Lindens to be well behaved, better give them a spanking (both the objects and the Lindens in question, perhaps).

Anyone else up for a JIRA issue called "implemented aggressive sound throttling without even asking us?"

Anybody know the details on how this new throttle is _supposed to_ work?

Oh, I wish I could get into Livingtree right about now. I would not be surprised of the birds are triggering this. :-/

Thanks

Ah thanks for the replies, I was pulling my hair out as to why suddenly the sim was overloaded with sound requests. I even did a search for sound spamming items.

So I hope this gets sorted out, because it will be very annoying to hunt down every single sound generation engine and delete it...

A guess:

A script will trigger a sound and the server will then notify all the clients to play that sound. Before the server probably didn't really care about the rate at which it was asked to send out sound triggers. But now the server will only accept sound requests every xth of a second.

So a machine gun or a nagging girlfriend is gonna have problems. A good workaround will be to just create bigger sound loops.

Well, They really *should* tell people what they are planning, then we could let them know they are about to break everything beforehand. :p

If you're lucky, one of the Lindens might know, though I wouldn't count on it.

I find it amusing that this really _is_ an "undocumented feature", like so many other things. Many will know what this term is generally a euphemism for.

Marianne? Miss Robin is goin' CRAZY with all the red error messages in Livingtee! Reisuki just visited her, and Robin was flying all over turning off scripts in birds, wind chimes and all sorts of harmless, wonderful stuff that this new update is absolutely TRASHING.

That sound throttling is WAY too agressive and anyone who owns scripted-sound items is in for a migraine.

If they roll it out in my sim, and if my fish, ducks and water sounds start trash-talking me with script errors, I'm going to AR every Linden associated with this roll-out for instituting a griefer attack on the grid, by means of their hyperactive throttle!

Blog update...
From: Teh Blog
Update 2008-05-28 12:24: We are currently deploying an updated “1.22.1″ version of the server code to the Preview Grid that reverts the sound throttling change and fixes the issues with flight assists. Our plan is as follows:
- Proceed with QA validation of the changes over the afternoon of 5/28
- Update the 1.22.0 regions to 1.22.1 on the morning of 5/29
- Update the remaining 1.21 regions to 1.22.1 on the morning of 5/30

So, hopefully, this new issue will go away tomorrow AM.

Poo - that is what I expected might happen. This sound throttling thing seems to have been well-intentioned, but not too well thought out. Any place with atmospheric looped sounds probably took a big hit. Heck, I bet Torley Linden's place in Grasmere is goin nuts, as is Privateer Space and many other locations. Yikes, what a disaster!

Gotta add ^v^HOWLZZ^v^ to the list, too.

From what Reisuki told me, it's the owner of the sound-loop items that gets spammed with red text by this throttle. She couldn't see or hear much of anything, while Robin was saying her screen was covered in red text. Once Robin turned off or picked up most everything in Livingtree that made sounds, the remaining things started working normally again. But any rich ambient noise environment gets trashed by this nonsense.

Fortunately, it appears in the blog that they are backing out that throttle section of code, and re-thinking their rash actions.

I do remember, though, a time when this sort of change was actually mentioned beforehand.

Oddly, I did get an update as evident by my region restart and my whacky flight assist, however I do own an island with lots of atmospheric sounds and I have yet to encounter any issues in the sound throttling update, no errors, no messages whatsoever. Of course I am not complaining but I wonder what the threshold or what the difference is.

**I lied - I have the show script errors in chat turned off which I forgot about, because when I went to my logs to look for some measurements for a thing I am doing I saw a ton of errors, however I don't see the script error icon at the top of the window and I can still hear all my sounds just as I did before. Strange. Oh well - at least there is a workaround for now for it. Edit preferences -> Text Chat -> Untick box for "Show script errors and warnings as regular chat"

It was mentioned beforehand. and I'm sure that if it had worked as intended then nobody but the griefers would've noticed.

Only if they can get it to zap the perpetrator with 50,000 volts through their keyboard, and wipe the entire contents of their hard drive should they survive the electrocution process.

Inane howling is a very, very bad thing. "Hoooooooooooooooo" is beyond the pale, however.

Ya, I gave her a phone call a bit ago to check in. She eventually figure out how to turn off all the red text so she could actually function -- but from anyting she told me, it was pretty harsh for a while.

Some of the folks on the good ol' blog have said dat all the content creators should have tested on the preview grid, an we have only oursleves to blame. I'd like to know how I could have effectively tested the whole sim on the beta grid. :-/

Well, i'd like to know where. I read the blog, the forums, the SL scripters list, the SL Dev list, and even manage to make it to a few Office Hours. I haven't heard a peep about this from any of those source. (no pun intended :P)

I challenge anyone to find any prior notice of the sound changes being available on the beta grid.

And as for griefing... using Livingtree as an example, if you touch the musical instruments too fast everything else in the region falls silent... brilliant (:
