Areas where regions/sims border one another allow flying to go uninterrupted. The mainland is good for flying over. Private sims tend to have no neighbours and exist in their own little universe. Trout - at the next Forum Cartel meeting (normally sundays) you should pass out copies so that we can form the Forum Cartel Air Arm. Thanks Conan. Although I am still not entirely sure if I've ever even been to the mainland - hehe. How do I know when I'm over there? I know this question makes me sound astoundingly vapid, but the one problem I have had with SL travel is getting the feeling that I am in one cohesive place. Because of the TP feature, I can never see SL as more than a bunch of "one off destinations". Even to the point that I couldn't tell you what region or city or sim or whatever that any of my usual hangouts are located in. I only know I live in Kazami. Does that ever get easier? This place is so big. I never have any idea what people are talking about when they talk about different territories to explore. No idea what direction to go in. Paris in SL is not as easy to locate as Paris in France for me yet ![]() |

Sometimes you crash into a sim that doesn't allow flight, and sometimes you try to cross into one where the prims are maxxed out. Other than that, you just fly around. The problem is that the plane flies faster than the map or minimap update, so if you look at the map, you're just flying over blue. You can see the sim names, but that's it. Also, the land doesn't rez fast enough, so if you fly low, sometimes you crash into stuff before you can see it. Best bet is to go high or get out over the water. The ocean is beautiful at night with the full moon.
I thought the John Denver reference was funny while I was at the bottom of the ocean trying to pick up the biplane and tp myself and Oryx back to the airfield. _____________________

I thought the John Denver reference was funny while I was at the bottom of the ocean trying to pick up the biplane and tp myself and Oryx back to the airfield. So then the reason I cannot fly off the estate I live in is because it is surrounded by water and that water is what? Is it that nobody owns it or is it Linden water or what? I can't fly over it once I've left the land. My chopper is still airborne but it will not go forward. In similar fashion if my whale swims too far off the same coast (less than 30m) he disappears and ends up in my lost and found folder. What does this say about the water surrounding Kazami? Underwater the sea floor in question (which is part of my property) just - ends. The water keeps going, but nothing that goes past a short distance can continue without being returned to me. Thanks again you guys. I don't mean to hijack the thread |

that water is what? Client-side. There is no simulator there... it'd be nice if you could fly over it, but there is no simulator there. Maybe one day it'll be feasible for activity in those areas to be simulated by clients or something... that'd be crazy... There are a bunch of Linden-owned simulators that are nothing but water, though. |

Well, if you look at the map Kazami North and South are adjacent to each other but no other sims. (The dark navy blue on the map is NOT actually ocean, but empty space for nonexistent sims) So, when you or your whale go offshore too far, there is NO server to render you, and you just presumably would bump into the wall forever if you were walking there.
It looks like your area of the ocean is beginning to fill up tho, so soon you may have more land to fly over. If you stand on the shore and look out, it looks like unlimited ocean. SL extends this texture-on-the-edge for you optically, but there is no actual land or ocean there. It does the same thing, incidently, if you rez a megaprim in the sky on the edge of a sim ... infinite grassland if you so texture it. If you look on the map again, mainland is just the big irregular islands. These are created by the Lindens and the land is sold directly by them. Unlike the islands, which are created by some resident ordering one, and that resident sells the land. |

Oh!!!!! Thank you so much for all of that information! I pretty much figured that the servers would stop rendering somewhere, but the visible ocean fooled me and then the dropoff below confused me. I guess I can always take the helicopter to the mainland and rez it somewhere and then I can fly around all over the place huh? Good thing I don't crash into a lot of stuff!
Thanks ![]() |

So there I was, flying along in the biplane, minding my own business. I was giving someone a ride, and they were sitting on the wing. It was really about the most fun I've had in SL in...maybe ever. Only having someone on the wing causes a little lag, I think. Or something. Anyway, it makes it a little more difficult to tell where you are going and which end is up. No prob, right? Wrong. All of a sudden she disappears off the wing (falling to the ground completely unhurt, btw). The next thing I know, the controls aren't responding at all and I findmyself firmly pressed up against someone's plate glass window. I couldn't have crashed better if I had tried. Oh Trout, If you ever want to crash your bi-plane again into some building.... you may use my house for that. I will be the "recreant" (Dutch meaning of the word ^^) who with watch with fun doing you it over and over.... Morwen. |

It doesn't even really hurt all that much. Just a few bruises and a stiff neck the next day. _____________________

We need to start a SLTSB - the Second Life Traffic Safety Board. Every crash needs to be logged in triplicate, and any homeowner suffering irreperable damage to their land/holdings can file to have the crash investigated. LOL ![]() |

OK. so we have a cheerily crashing biplane operator, a building to crash into, and presumably Morwen can rustle up a long white gown (Morwan? female, i hope lol?). All we need is someone with a huge gorilla AV and we can do a reasonable King Kong re-creation .... hmmm ... *starts rummaging around her inventory*
maybe the guy from the SL splash screen when they're "banging on things" would be willing to help ... |

We need a whole sim's worth of prims to build the Empire State building. (and when we're done, the sim owner can rent out apartments) |

Well hey, as a veteran of many amateur theatre extravaganzas, I was willing to make do with whatever building Morwen actually HAS! But, no need! The Empire State Building is at Har 166,154,22. It is missing the top, but we could make an attachment for Kong lol ...

I've had some scripted attachments start spewing math errors as a result of that sort of attack. Usually resetting the scripts would fix them, but I have a few totally broken Flight Feathers in my inventory that just won't work anymore P:

If I were to accidentally orbit myself, and therefore not have had my consent to orbit myself, have I griefed myself? Should I then AR myself? This is just silly. Angel. |

I could start a business - Sl Stuntman Extraordinaire. Send me a LM and roll cameras and I'll come screaming in and crash into your garden/house/swimming pool/significant other... Alyx - I'd be happy to give you a ride, but as Oryx can attest, there are going to be some emergency landings...maybe at full throttle into someone's house. It's not for the faint of heart. _____________________

The first time i got orbited was on my first day in SL back in 2004. I was in the welcome area in ahern, editing my appearance next to the shooting range and bam i go flying. next thing i know I'm in the middle of the ocean 15 sims away. I was a newb and was like "WTF was that?". This was the first in a series of pushes I've encountered in my 3 years of SL. I lost count after the first 50 times. Now i have protection. I stay in a no push sim, with scripts disabled to outsiders and i wear a protec/psitec combo. ;p The psitec is attached to my left butt cheek. Yes i know it's a brain implant but still.

I was orbited by a beggar once, he wanted a 100 Lindens , I gave him the Queens blessing. (Not THE Queen). He sent me off into oblivion and I wound up God knows how far away. But the sim I wound up in had a really nice shoe shop, so it was worthwhile inconvenience.

@Trout: Oh I don't mind virtual emergency landings....I play Flight Simulator a lot and those honking big 747s are bitches to land....I once crashed an F-22 nose first into an airport...

I've been looking on SL Exchange for airplanes; pretty cool stuff there! I can't decide what to get. I'm thinking a Spitfire...but if I can find another biplane scripted for battles I'll buy that one. I could offer a private island for dogfights; low lag and all. Unless someone else has found another place (search is down right now...)
