If I were to accidentally orbit myself, and therefore not have had my consent to orbit myself, have I griefed myself?

Should I then AR myself?

I think in order to be perfectly intellectually honest with yourself, you should AR yourself.

Speaking of which, I might have gotten ar'ed last night. How would I know? Do they send you a notice or something? I'd like to defend myself.

It was an accident, but I think I really pissed off a landowner. I didn't leave anything on her land and I got out of there ASAP. I never meant to go on her land in the first place. Long story, but it was a total accident. Actually, I thought it was sort of funny until she got so upset.

Silly question.
08-17-2007 09:04
I've been in SL for almost a year now. I guess I'm lucky or I've led a sheltered second life, but I've never been orbited, or seen anyone being orbited. I have an idea but I don't know if it's accurate or not. Can someone tell me exactly what "orbitting" is and how it works?

Thanks,
Tex

I've only been orbited by friends, playing around. :D

Tex, it basically flings you far, far away and up into the sky.

I am bumping you to an 8.5 on the Official Trout Measuring Instrument of Sluttiness. You are an enigma - on the one hand a sweet, gentle, intelligent woman who we would like to wrap up in our arms and protect, and on the other, a temptress to whom we would like to do all sorts of unmentionable things.

Congratulations and shame on you! You are a bit of a slut.

Basically, you get flung upwards at high speed indefinitely. Normally it's by being shot with some sort of cageing device that puts you in a cage then rockets the cage upwards.

It's kinda fun actually. Nice view.

I don't want to name names because I think it's against the TOS, but this person is welcome to chime in (as long as she supports my excuse).

So there I was, flying along in the biplane, minding my own business. I was giving someone a ride, and they were sitting on the wing. It was really about the most fun I've had in SL in...maybe ever. Only having someone on the wing causes a little lag, I think. Or something. Anyway, it makes it a little more difficult to tell where you are going and which end is up. No prob, right? Wrong. All of a sudden she disappears off the wing (falling to the ground completely unhurt, btw). The next thing I know, the controls aren't responding at all and I findmyself firmly pressed up against someone's plate glass window. I couldn't have crashed better if I had tried.

Lovely home, BTW. Beautiful landscaping. Very, very well done. Before I can even climb out of the biplane, the homeowner is there, reading me the riot act. What are you doing here, my partner is going to be upset, trespassing, etc... I apologized, picked up the biplane and left. I didn't even break the window. The biplane crashes SL-style. Spectacular crash, no harm done. At any rate, I logged off a couple minutes later, so I don't know whether she AR'ed me, but the threat was certainly there, and she was pretty unhappy. I have a feeling she did.

Even if she did it was worth it. Flying over SL at night is spectacular, and with a friend along, it can't be beat. I highly recommend it. Just make sure your friend is forgiving and practice a little. Maybe keep it over the water, so you both go down JFK Jr. style and no landowners have excuses to be upset.

So - what am I looking at? They probably won't perma-ban me. Couple days off? Can I come back first and say goodbye to a couple people who are expecting to see me this weekend? Do I get a last meal and a blindfold? This can't be THAT bad, right?

LL will laugh at any AR that comes from this. I expect it will get passed round the office so they can all share the joke. There is no tresspassing in SL. If something is private, the landowner needs to prevent people coming on the land. If you physically are able to go somewhere, it means you are allowed to go there. This woman is a fool.

Yeah as much fun as flying is in SL it gets frustrating when you crash for no good reason.

Well, I don't want to cast any aspersions on her. I think I startled her. One minute she's minding her own business and the next some fool kamikazes himself right into her living room window. I can see her getting a little miffed. I would have laughed like a hyena if it had been me, but then, that sort of event kind of defines my SL existence. I love the sublimely ridiculous. Other people find it annoying. What I really hope is that it doesn't cause her to throw up ban lines and upset her neighbors or mess up and otherwise very attractive build.

Conan - sorry to hijack your thread here.

Trout, if you have her name, why not send her a nice apology via IM or notecard?

"Dear Ms. Resident,

I just wanted to say how sorry I was for disturbing your peace and quiet last night. It was completely unintentional, I assure you! I was flying my biplane and ran into some unexpectedly heavy SL turbulence, causing me to lose control and crash (rather spectacularly) into your window.

For your information, my passenger managed to bail out safely, and I myself am uninjured. I will be happy to pay for any damage I may have inadvertently caused to your house, belongings, or garden. I am sending you a donation of $L 50 to compensate you for any mental anguish you may have suffered.

If you would like to see SL from the air, I would be glad to give you a biplane ride free of charge. I'm a safe pilot...despite all indications to the contrary.

Sincerely,
Trout "Ace" Recreant

Offer her a copy of the biplane too.

Well I was the passenger on the wing; I thought it was great fun! Maybe next time we can keep a map on, and fly in circles n stuff around one sim. I need my own dang airplane now.

Oryx - I didn't want to out you, but thanks for chiming in. It was fun, wasn't it? Thanks again for everything and next time we fly over water to avoid these problems. The crash I'm referring to here was the last one, not the one where we hit the water or the other one when we were first trying to take off. Or any of the others that may have happened that I'm forgetting. I'm usually a marginally better pilot - I'll sort it out and keep us in the air next time.

I'm looking up a source for these biplanes - I think Nika turned me on to one. It turns out that the note that came with the plane was wrong and the permissions aren't what they were supposed to be, so transferring them is a hassle. I have a note in to the creator. I might just buy one for everyone in the competition yesterday if I can find them.

Lindal - I love the note idea, but I can't remember her name and I didn't save the chat. Even if I did, I think I might lay low and let her cool off. I don't think she'd be open to a ride. Although she should be. She might enjoy it.

Trout, you were flying a plane and you crashed. Not unheard of in RL. This is SL and things are going to happen. If she is too uptight to laugh it off then that's not your issue. You certainly don't owe her an apology.

As for being AR'd. Don't sweat it. This would be completely ignored. Much bigger fish to fry.

How do you guys manage to fly around all over the place like this?

I live in a private estate which is not that big and when I fly my chopper around I can only go a little past the end of the land in any direction. I can't fly off to some other area. I can never fly far enough to not see my heli-pad.

Is this normal everywhere, or do you guys fly somewhere where the range is a lot bigger? I just can't figure this out.

Thanks :)

We need to start a SLTSB - the Second Life Traffic Safety Board.
Every crash needs to be logged in triplicate, and any homeowner suffering irreperable damage to their land/holdings can file to have the crash investigated.

Speaking of which - I think a few of my blimps are still floating around out there from being force-ejected by walls. I hit the dirt, but the blimp kept going. You may want to watch for errant blimps while you're out there in the biplanes.

Areas where regions/sims border one another allow flying to go uninterrupted. The mainland is good for flying over. Private sims tend to have no neighbours and exist in their own little universe.

Trout - at the next Forum Cartel meeting (normally sundays) you should pass out copies so that we can form the Forum Cartel Air Arm.
