I still don't understand the whole "SL model" thing.

Since avs can be bought head to toe and poses are premade, where is the distinguishing 'talent' from av to av?

Couldn't a designer even create alts to model their own clothing?

I don't get it.

They could and they do...but not all of them. Some hire models...to model items in their store, to showcase them at a fashion show, or to make advertising copy.

The SL fashion scene mirrors RL...and so there are models, some of them extraordinarily talented and beautiful (Hi, Honeybear!) Some even have a "name" among the fashionistas, and having one model your creations lends cachet to your brand.

Think of it as a form of roleplaying, and maybe it will make a bit more sense.

I second that. Can barely get my brain around th' RL breed.

Gimme a skanky ho any day. SL or RL, they prob'ly got a more int'restin story ta tell than some overdress'd, overpaid, self-absorbed slice a cheesecake.

Models, Escorts, Dancers = disposable, sorry but it is true.

Dime a dozen. Very few people have memories that long reaching.

No one will remember me dancing (fully clothed I might add, if in lingerie). A very few (psychologically damaged) people might remember some topless sheer rebellion when I had my own place. Anyone got a problem with it? Tough.

I've modelled also, for friends. Mainly I'd say if you want money in SL the way with most integrity is with your bank card since making it as a designer is a tough call.

And beware of people talking bullshit, for there is much here!

i disagree with the dancer part of this mainly because you interact with so many people and you end up with many friends..
i do think the dime a dozen statement is true but only because there are so many..
i have been out of dancing for getting close to a year now and i still get people asking me to dance or when i am going to start dancing again or if i am working at a new club..

i just think it depends on the impression you leave in people..if they feel you were in it for the money then you are not as well remembered as if you were up there as a person having fun enjoying being around the people coming in..

Modeling you are not as much in touch with the public until they see an add with you in it or in a show..

with runway models i think it is a bit different because they want you to be a certain height or size..most want you to adjust or wear their shape and skin..
Doing something for adds or a photographer that takes pictures for art..if you have a unique enough look they will ask you or take you on if you have the right attitude..

Still models are a dime a dozen but there are also the unique ones in there that catch someones eye that they feel they want in an add or picture..

escorts..i couldn't say..

still all i know is there are a lot of dime a dozens out there besides these 3..
all get clumped in with doing it for a living or the money or being bimbos and it's just not the case..
i know a lot of dancers that used dancing as a launching pad to learn SL and move onto other things..

it's been a while since i've been in that industry so it may have changed a lot since then too lol

If you're talking about models to pose for ad signage, etc., yes. A designer can create alts, or just pose for the boxes herself. Simone, for example, does that most of the time, though sometimes she invites her friends to pose. It's actually more work to get other people to pose for you than to just do it yourself.

The live models that pose in some stores are mostly a fancier form of camping; the pay in L$ is usually little or no better but you also get free stuff, and in exchange you are expected to keep a regular schedule. Some stores expect their models to interact with the store visitors, in which case there is also an element of hosting.

Models for runway shows are another matter; there IS skill to that. Not so much the poses and hair and clothing, which can be bought, though it helps to be able to choose appropriate hair and shoes to complement the outfits you are given to model. But the ability to do the walks even in the face of incredible lag (a typical runway show features a sim full of people wearing the primmiest hair, clothing, and shoes in existence), the patience to deal with the inevitable snags and delays, and the right mixture of tact and forthrightness to talk to the designers and make sure you are presenting their outfits as they wish without getting on their nerves -- those are real skills, and for most of us they require both practice and a considerable amount of Second Life experience.

Models as hostesses for events are yet another skill set. Again, it's not so much about the look, but about the ability to help facilitate the event, to get people talking and keep the party going. Modeling agencies usually don't hire people just to do events, but it may be an additional request for people who do runway shows or other forms of modeling.

Can I just say that I just finished reading through this thread and OMG, I haven't laughed this hard in weeks. Some of you are amazing with a keyboard!! Damn the dancing, we are harboring writers here who could make a mint with a pen and paper! A few of my favorite lines, just to recap:

...asusming you are classy and damn good at what you do regardless if it's on a cat walk or between pixel sheets.

...You're not even locked into what species you are, let alone your profession. Be a model, be a dancer, be an escort, builder, mentor, hobo, hedgehog or table lamp.

I loved to turn my Enchanter into a random item in relatively uninhabited areas then wait for newbies to walk by and start conversations with them...

suck the chrome off a trailor hitch...

...a dude get blown every night then log on as an alt and be a girl!

Gimme a skanky ho any day. SL or RL, they prob'ly got a more int'restin story ta tell than some overdress'd, overpaid, self-absorbed slice a cheesecake.

Freelance....write....find an agent! Some of you are wordsmiths of the highest order....seriously. My pen cap is off to you. :: deep bow ::

/me agrees w/Arielyn (pretty av name btw) this forum is danged entertaining. lol

Thanks to those who educated me on what makes an SL model stand apart from the rest.

It sounds kind of fun actually. I could put all that stuff I buy and find excuses to wear, to use. Hmm.

So - how exactly *does* one make it through treacly lag when no one else can? Wouldn't want to fall off the catwalk.

The first is making shoes at night while, you know, while the old cobbler sleeps. You can bake cookies in a tree. But the third job, some call it, uh, "the show" or "the big dance," it's the profession that every linden aspires to.
