From: Bodhisatva Paperclip My laptop can't handle SL but there have been times when I've used it in tandem with my desktop (constantly grabbing the wrong mouse, of course). However, that machine is hinting at croaking soon so perhaps its replacement could be employed that way. *thinking....thinking* EDIT: Ceera, that's interesting and potentially very useful! I'll look into it. I'm just so used to applications that allow you to run more than one at once. Thank you! EDIT AGAIN: Bingo? http://secondlife.com/knowledgebase/article.php?id=369 Will try it some time this weekend! You could also look at SLeek. It's a no-graphics libsl client thing, but it apparently handles inventory as well as chat, ims, and in theory some follow/tp stuff (though that crashed it when I tried). I don't recall the link, and I think it's windows only (needs .NET thingers). Google will know though- it might be enough to get one full SL client running and that one, because it doesn't put much strain on the computer.

"Where stealing comes into the picture is when someone creates more than one basic acount FOR FREE, by lying on the registration form, withholding payment info and denying that they alreaaccounts already doesn't sugar-coat the theft of the additional account and make it OK."
I don't understand, (I'm new and a lot is missing for me) I wanted an ALT for roleplaying but I couldn't figure out where to add one. I found nothing on the searches I did (however I was using 'second' 'another' and 'additional' as search terms because I hadn't stumbled on a thread where anybody had used ALT. Anyway I eventually started from scratch and set up another account. I used the same password and email as my basic account thinking that the software would catch it, but it never asked about money. HOWEVER, I still can't log on as my ALT because my system automatically comes up as the primary. I have NO desire to be dishonest just to make it all work right. WIll someone please take pity on a newbie?
thanks kyttn

Yeah. You're necroposting to a thread that hasn't been corresponded in for nearly a year. SL evolves fast. Things change. In the ten months since you posted, the charge for alt accounts has been scrapped. Mainly because it wasn't easy to enforce. So don't worry. Your alt account is free.

Notwithstanding some outdated information on SL's website, there is at present no fee for creating an alt.
Just set up a new account and log in under that new account name. It sounds like you tried to do this and came up as your previous account anyhow, but I don't see how this is possible. Did you type your new account name in at the login screen?
For what it is worth, my main and my alt have the name email address (not a free email account) and the same password, and I have never had any problems using either or both avatars.

It is becoming more and more apparent that I am alone in the world as a No Alt holdout. Are there others? Should we have a signal or wear a ribbon or something to identify ourselves?

From: Kyttn Tigerpaw HOWEVER, I still can't log on as my ALT because my system automatically comes up as the primary. Accounts on SL are independent of each other, unlike games such as World of Warcraft, where you can have one account with several characters to choose from. You have to log in under your alt's specific name and password in order to access it.

My alt is merely an extended closet and group keeper

thanks kyttn You did everything right. LL will not charge you a fee for the new account, even though some of the stuff on their website says so. Just start SL normally. At the login screen, instead of hitting Connect right away, enter your new account name and password. THEN hit Connect. [EDIT: I just noticed you used the same password for both accounts. Bad idea...use a different password for your alt, just in case one account is ever compromised.] Congratulations, and welcome to Orientation Island (again)! Send a Friends request to your main account name. Authorize each other to modify your objects. That way you can build on the same things with either avatar. If your main avatar has some transferable stuff, log on as your main, and drop the stuff on your alt's profile. The poor thing needs clothes and hair and an AO, after all...

My SL wife is actually an alt to a business owner. She uses her alt for work during the day, and at night, switches for her alt. It's quite funny, since she considers her main to be an alt now that we are married! Brenda, you're not the only one with no-alts. I don't tend to have one, since i do most of my SL work with my main, as well as RP.

From: Brenda Connolly No. Everyone I meet appears to be an Alt........ I started out totally against ALTS because I saw them as a way to cheat the system. Now I have two ALTS, no one in the Cartel has ever met one of them. In fact no one in SL has met them. They are strictly for testing scripts, permissions and to have a second owner in my group. They don't have inventory, they don't shop, they don't have friends. I visited the Alt party as myself, my ALTs stayed tucked away on the other PC. "CX"
