Here is what I put in my own "arguments.txt" file. On Windows, I think you add "-multiple -login Ceera Murakami xxxxyyyy" to the shortcut that you launch SL with. Replacing my name with yours, and replacing xxxxyyyy with your password. One caveat: If you set up a shortcut or a copy of SL to pre-enter your login info, including your password, it will FAIL if LL puts out any update that has a required-response dialog. So all the "optional" updates become mandatory. Keep an unmodified version of SL handy for single-user launch, to get past that. I tried the tutorial in knowledge base exactly. I use windows. It wouldn't allow me to create a multiple login. We tried to do that except in instructions they did have anything except multiple-login and we tried to change shortcut it changed only send me to exe file tried changing that logged in could sign in but it wouldn't get past the logging in page then crash. I wish it was just as simple as using run as. I can still use the program through program windows but wondering if I messed up the exe file |

And this was in the day before you could stop someone on your friends list TPing to your location...unannounced. Oh boy, that can be embarrassing. Hence, the birth of alty ![]() Oh wow! I'd forgotten that. You have to salute LL for changing that LOL Hi Egon! yes, lots of land up for sale in vicinity. I need glasses .. hadn't noticed treehouse!! |

you put -multiple right on the end of the windows shortcut, after the quote marks if any.
I think. I haven't run two accounts together for a while now. _____________________

so here's the... 10-dollar question:
why create an alt to your main account when you could just create a new freebie account and not pay a setup fee? i mean, there must be SOME advantage to having linked accounts. |

Ummm. Because I am honest? Because it requires lying on your application form and stating that you have no other SL accounts to get another free, unverified account? Because I don't want my alts banned from various people's lands as potential griefers because they show up as "No payment info on file"? Creating more than one free account is stealing accounts from Linden Lab, if you can't get that, I doubt I can explain it to you. _____________________

Creating more than one free account is stealing accounts from Linden Lab, if you can't get that, I doubt I can explain it to you. To go even one step further, I just went Premium this week. The current stipend rate doesn't quite offset the cost, even with the Annual option, and I don't intend on buying land since my main is in charge of that aspect of SL. But with the prospect of capped logins looming at peak hours, I figured I'd cover my bases. It also gives me the option to donate tier to a worthy cause. Also, I dunno, it just seemed the right thing to do at the time. |

Premium alts are handy for propping up group land tier, the stipend is a nice offset to the cost too (better for older accounts with the full $500, but I also treat stipends from my fresh building alt as L$ to cover things like uploads).
And not being treated like pondscum if you're out and about with an alt, because you're not the untouchable NPIOF. _____________________

i make new alts just for fun
they all have different personalities and show different sides of me. some are practical, as in testing of items i make, but most have no real "purpose" other than to step into someone else's shoes._____________________

there's some difference besides 'its stealing/not legal/lying.'
you guys just aren't coming out and saying it. am i to understand that your main premium account gets 300l a week (or 500 for old folks), then your linked accounts all also get 300l a week each? or are you all paying monthly/yearly fees for each account? (in which case, it's the same as having two unlinked accounts, isnt it? you pay for both.) 'propping up tier'? holding land for your main so you dont incur higher land tier fees? or am i confused by what i think you guys mean by 'alt.' i thought an 'alt' was a secondary account linked to your main account. some of you, it sounds like you have two (or more) premium accounts. which makes them all main accounts in my mind. |

Propping up tier- For my land group, if I want another 512m2, it's more cost effective to pay up an annual sub for an "alt" account and use their tier, than, say go into the next "double up" tier level- going from 8km to 16km tier is a hefty cost when you only want another small amount of land.
I don't consider my premium subscribed alts as alternative "mains." Ace is who I am in SL and alts are outfits for Ace to wear. Because Ace is me and I am Ace. _____________________

some of you, it sounds like you have two (or more) premium accounts. which makes them all main accounts in my mind. Main, to me, is the account with which I have the greatest emotional identification rather than simply a premium account. Regan was my first avatar and remains my primary identity, although there was a period there when my alt attempted a coup for that position. But Regan reasserted herself and the two are finding a balance. Regan has a specific shape and no desire to change beyond the very occassional new skin. My alt, on the other hand, changes shape daily and is much more playful about appearance. |

No, that's not right. The alt is just like a whole new account. If you don't pay $10/month for your alt, the alt can't own land and gets no allowance. Indeed, you are better off lying than you are creating an alt; if you lie and use a different e-mail address, you can create a new free account. To create a basic alt account, there's a one-time fee of US$10. If you want allowance for your alt, you have to upgrade your alt to premium, just like any other account. There's no stealing or lying or anything like that anywhere in there. _____________________

The stipend any account gets is solely based on that account's regiistration information and member status. The fact that a new account is a verified alt for an older member does nothing in that calculation.
For example, Ceera is my first account - the one that was my one-time free sign-up account. She gets L$50 per week every week that she logs in to SL, because that was what Basic accounts got when she signed up. I have another alt that is also Basic, and which I paid $9.95 to create. He is Ceera's roleplay 'brother'. He was created after the stipend for new Basic accounts was eliminated. So he gets no allowance at all, whether he logs in or not. He did get a one-time L$250 payment for providing payment info at registration time. He's never purchased a single L$, because I feed him funds from my main account. He spends a lot of L$ on clothes and other stuff, like any other account. He still shows as "Payment Info Used", because my payment info has been used, to pay his sign-up fee. If I created another new alt today, and provided the payment info, I get charged the $9.95 again, and that one would also be listed as "Payment Info Used", and would also get no stipend. She would also get a one-time L$250 payment for providing payment info at registration time. If any of those was a Premium account, then the monthly, quarterly or yearly fee to remain Premium would be at the going rate, per Premium account, and the sign-up bonus and the weekly stipend is based on what was in effect when each account was created. So even if I had an old Premium account with the L$500 weekly rate, a new Premium account created today only gets the L$300 rate for that account. Where stealing comes into the picture is when someone creates more than one basic acount FOR FREE, by lying on the registration form, withholding payment info and denying that they already got a free account. That is stealing $9.95 USD from Linden Lab for every time someone does that. A real life person is only entitled to one FREE account in their lifetime. Withholding payment info and lying about having other accounts already doesn't sugar-coat the theft of the additional account and make it OK. _____________________

What Ceera said. In my case:
My main went Premium at the time that L$400/wk stipends were in effect, so that's what she gets each week from LL. My alt account cost $9.95 to set up as a Basic, then later went Premium at the L$300/wk stipend rate. To view Transaction records for either account, I have to log in separately (pain in the butt). One account is tied to my credit card, the other to PayPal. That gives me two different avenues to buy Lindens, all depending on which one has enough of a discretionary balance to fund my SL fun. |

It would certainly be nice, though, if honestly-created alt accounts were linked to the main account in some way. I'd much rather have one player account that can keep track of multiple avatar accounts, but lacking that, they could at least automatically make the alt and main friends or let them edit each other's objects and land or whatnot (since multiple sessions do require a geeky workaround that not everyone will know about).

I believe there is a feature request being voted on for an "Avatar Wallet", a behind the scenes linking of accounts that would more solidly tie a single player's accounts to their real ID, and at the same time might permit them to share funds more readily, or have other advantages. What we need most of all is a way to verify age and ID that keeps out the under-age kids and the repeat-offender griefers, while at the same time not excluding non-USA Players who can't tie in to our system of Pay Pal and credit cards. International businesses deal with the issue of client identity all the time for doing business over the Internet. LL needs to get a clue from the big companies that have already figured this one out. _____________________

They can do that already. There's a checkbox in the Friends list that lets you grant object editing rights to another avatar. Woot! As soon as I found that, my main and alt immediately granted each other that right. It's saved me a LOT of logging in/logging out everytime I wanted to move a lamp or change a texture. |

Helped when finding some non-us friends anyway. |

Open Friends List. click Add. Type in name of other account, hit Enter, and send that account an offer of friendship. Log off. Log on with the other account, A freindship offer appears from the first account. Accept it. The two accounts are now Friends. _____________________

Ceera, thank you for the info on running two clients on a mac. Now my main and my alt can meet each other face to face instead of just sending each other goofy IMs.

OK, So having read this thread and scoured the web pages I can not see how to create an Alt account. Can someone who has an Alt Account please advise me how I do this. I am sure it is all very simple but at the moment I can't see anywhere how to do this.
