I went for "lie through your teeth" coz I have to do this so often in my reality. Do you realize that if artists in my field (in any field prolly!) told the whole truth we wouldnt have any friends? Not that we have friends anyway oz we are all lying through our teeth. Even yesterday, in real, I went to see an exhibition opening (glass of organge jice in my hand you'll be pleased to know) and teh HUGE paintings were so ghastly I blenched. I saidsomething like "These are powerful statements and I am impressed by their monolithic qualitities." and wandered off again.

I am just as weak. I love praise and fear criticism. One absolutely wonderful singer-artist I know told me that he can be showered with priase but ONE single email or comment - even a comment in a fan email - can shatter his day. I can remember comments that were bad ones - one said TRULY that I should never have been born and itwas so devastating a series of put-downs I wept. I wonder if that was teh truth? The writer thought so, after all.

Here I see ghastly hair styles and stuff like tha and heart-breakingly proud avs with real issues of taste and I... Okay, 'nuff said. You all look gorgeous, darlings! :)

You don't get it do you? If you are fat but think you are thin, then the realisation (provoked by another) that you are fat doesn't change the fact that you were fat all along. This might explain why you had "unexplained" health problems, couldn't pick up attractive potential mates, were last choice when sides were selected, clothes didn't fit you etc . . .

Pep (When the extent of your actual misery is revealed you might be able to do something about it, but not otherwise. )

Hmm...

So you are trying to be HELPFUL. I see.

/me laughs

But isn't there a pool of irritation behind all this? I mean, in the above paragraph you say "you" rather than "one" - which I think is intentional. If I *were* fat, I might be stung by that. Which was your intention, right?

I don't think that people say things without some sort of emotional context. I mean their OWN emotional context, which can be unrealised (in the same sense as you use it in your initial post).

And so, remarks that I might characterize as "pitiless", you might see as "simple truth" - but I don't think that you (or any other "truth-tellers";) make such remarks out of a simple, altruistic desire to help others.

So you were asking, "Is it okay to make people miserable?"

Often the critic is a failed artist or has so many issues they must hurt others. Do you think you may have issues, Pep?

I see I am truly in the minority with the "lie through teeth" choice. An really interesting poll. As I said before, not many of you are in my line of work, then.

And isn't "eat pie" the same as "say nothing" but they are too scared to say nothing?

Expressing an interest in pie is an internet convention for being bored with a topic.

No, "Eat Pie" is the "change the subject" answer. What kind of pie do you want, anyway?

What is *your* attitude when confronted with questions like "Does my bum look big in this?"

From: Pserendipity Daniels
I have been advised by an expert in these matters that "You look wonderful, whatever you wear." is the correct response if you are a normal male . .

In most cases you would be correct.
Depends on if we are talking about new clothes or clothes that have at some point in the past been a favorite but now seem a bit …..”different”.
For example, if while shopping for a new outfit my wife asks “do these pants make my butt look big?” most assuredly I will be open and honest to prevent money being wasted on an outfit that may never leave the closet long enough to remove the tags. On the other hand if we are running late for a social event that we must attend and my wife is rummaging through her closet to find something and she’s on her 3rd pair of pants and asks the same question my answer might be a little different. “They look fine. I’ll get the car you give the babysitter money for pizza and let go!”.

And so, a woman who asks that question MIGHT actually want to know exactly that, but she could equally well mean any of the following:

- I'm afraid I'm getting fat. Am I?
- Do you still care for me?
- You like looking at my butt, don't you! Should I bend over?
- I want you to touch my butt NOW.

So - I have got a 1 in 4 chance of getting it right, and a 3 in 4 chance of being an unfeeling, uncaring brute.

As I keep pointing out to Love (and my wife actually) I can't stop you reading into my words things that I haven't written. If I had said "one" I would have been accused of over-intellectualism, or being posh or something. That you choose to take it as a personal attack is neither unsurprising nor correct.

From: Seven Okelli
I don't think that people say things without some sort of emotional context. I mean their OWN emotional context, which can be unrealised (in the same sense as you use it in your initial post).
You have it the wrong way around. I don't think that people can read/hear things without some sort of emotional context. That *you* react the way you do to my words is *your* responsibility and *your* problem, which is a point I have made before, I believe.

From: Seven Okelli
And so, remarks that I might characterize as "pitiless", you might see as "simple truth" - but I don't think that you (or any other "truth-tellers";) make such remarks out of a simple, altruistic desire to help others.
Did I say that I did? I was merely offering an illustration of how misery existed before illumination.

Pep (And it is not me that has introduced emotion into the argument. :p )

We seem to be surrounded (in these forums and in the wider world, socially and in the media) by political correctness, "spin" and mealy-mouthed euphemisms which damn with faint praise.

What is *your* attitude when confronted with questions like "Does my bum look big in this?" and do you think it is kinder that those who lack self-awareness should be allowed to continue in their blissful ignorance, or should they be put out of their unrealised misery?

Pep (You can probably guess my own opinion.)

Your ass looked huge in those harem pants. (what, I don't actually recall seeing you anywhere except at that one party. My material is limited)
