From: Isabeau Imako When we are role playing, aren't we still being 'ourselves'? Even if it's just a small part of us that we may keep buried in RL. I'm talking about the personality part. You may not have fur or scales, or be 4 feet tall, but it's still you typing. Dat's *sorta* how I see it myself, too. What you see of me inworld is pretty much me IRL, but it's "filtered" through the avatar a bit. It's somewhere between augmentation and immersion, p'rhaps. From: Toy LaFollette My SL momma an daddy werk at a 'doption agency so I go der a lot to see them an I see a lot of ladies dat ate whole watermellons but dey come looking for more kids I seen a few of them. Funny, I was tole it was punkin seeds. Mari

What I worry about with SL babies is that if we're not careful they'll grow up to be the next generation of greifers! They might be cute cuddly bundles of fun now but in no time they'll be 7ft 9ins tall and chucking exploding melons all round the sandboxes!!!!

From: Stephen Wisent My freedom is to quietly think to myself..."WTF".. I agree, I've often thought WTF? Both in RL and SL. Any spamming is annoying to me. To be fair though, expecting mothers who have 'talking' bellies aren't the only ones who spam chat. So if someone dislikes this type of RP _because_ of this, they should feel the same way about the "Woot Woot" crowd (or the ones who use chat to advertise) who may not think of themselves as role players...

Hi Isabeau, Yes.. sorry, I know it sounded like I was singling people out - I wasn't. I guess it's analogous to that saying: "I disagree with what you say, but will defend to the death your right to say it" Sometimes I get the feeling that some people in SL think that even voicing a disagreement is in some way a slur on their freedoms.. which it isn't of course.

From: Milla Alexandre During the course of the next 15 minutes or so the mother and child were engaging many of the folks in their fantasy...the child was acting up and the mom was reprimanding.....nothing over the top....just what you might expect. My problem with that scenerio....is not so much that people do it......it's that I'm not in it to role play....I am myself....I do not like to be looped into someone elses fantasy.....having to play along so their little world is seamless. This is why I go to WalMart when I get to feeling like I might want a kid. Fifteen minutes there and I'm cured.

Sometimes I get the feeling that some people in SL think that even voicing a disagreement is in some way a slur on their freedoms.. which it isn't of course. No it isn't. But we are becoming more intolerant of dissenting opinions in RL, in the name of Political Correctness, and like most RL annoyances, they are beginnig to spill over into "La Vida Segunda" *marcas registrada*

From: Claire Silverspar Though I do hate the talking tummies...I don't need that xxx needs to pee becasue baby xxx is sitting on her bladder. ew. This is the only issue I have with SL pregnancies. But it is the same issue I have with talking "intimate parts" in public. (Sidenote: I have a really funny log I kept the first time I heard a "talking nipple." I was new in SL, never heard of Xcite or "bits" and was totally floored.) IMO, talking body parts of whatever ilk need to be kept in private. EDITED TO ADD: And I feel the same way with the excessive gesture spams. There have been some places I've gone to try to have a nice evening of dance that I've ended up muting almost everyone in the place due to the spam. Needless to say those places quickly get marked off my list of "places to return." ~ ~ ~ I was in "hatchie form" (baby dragons from Isle of Wyrms) one day trying out the tiny dances when I heard someone say "Mommy, LOOK!!! A baby dwagon!!!!" I cammed around and saw a couple with a child AV (turns out during the ensuing interaction that the adult AVs were the mother and uncle of the child AV - uncle was getting married later that day and they were doing a little shopping). Anyway, I decided to rp my hatchie and join in with the child AV and all of us (child, mother, uncle) had a great time!

I sometimes suspect LL is making us much more intolerant..... the constant problems, the lack of support?

From: Oryx Tempel This is why I go to WalMart when I get to feeling like I might want a kid. Fifteen minutes there and I'm cured. That is almost the exact thing I say when people ask me, "Don't you want to have kids?" Me, "Have you ever been to Walt-Mart on a Sunday afternoon?" @Stephen, I was making more of a general comment. I totally understand what you mean by Freedom of speech/thoughts works both ways... in RL and SL.

That's one of their better qualities. There are a whole host of reasons why I am a WalMart snob. But it doesn't extend to those who shop there, my Mom loves the place, and in a lot of areas, they are the only way people can. But I won't patronize them.

Oryx, you have never looked hotter! Wanna go for a ride in my truck? I got a case of Bud and a bucket of KFC. We can have a picnic on that hill over looking the dump. I need a new couch for the front porch. You can help me lift it. I will put that tire off the rim down on the ground, the baby can use it for a playpen.

From: Marianne McCann I knwo dat one of the reasons my mommy in SL *is* a mommy in SL is because she has and loves her kids in RL. It's one of the things dat brings her joy, and having kids around her feels "natural" to her. Lol I have rl grandkids. From: Marianne McCann She also enjoys the fact dat her SL kids dun really mess the house and are generally well-mannered. Mari Hmm..not messy, well behaved... From: VonGklugelstein Alter We are all idiots to one degree or another QFT! From: Isabeau Imako When we are role playing, aren't we still being 'ourselves'? Excellent point. It takes a certain amount of effort and practice even to come across as our natural selves. And we all make some adjustments in order to connect with the interests, moods, vocabularies etc. of the the people around us. From: Oryx Tempel This is why I go to WalMart when I get to feeling like I might want a kid. Fifteen minutes there and I'm cured. ROFL! I know just what you mean. I don't like shopping. At all. But I had to go to Wal-Mart at midnight to make an emergency purchase of a new car battery. Even then it was full of young families with small children. People who work more than one job have to go shopping when they can.

From: Isabeau Imako I have a hard time believing they are that many people who do NOT role play.
The truth is every single person in sl role plays. Whether they know it or not, whether they admit it or not they do. The very second you begin to customize your avie you're getting it ready to do just that, roleplay. People make and setup their characters, give them life and use them to do different things. Even if you don't socialize with others you're still here in sl and your av isn't really you but a creation of you, a representation of you. You may have a house you use, you get dressed, you dance, you do everything or anything, it's all roleplaying. It doesn't have to be with other people, you could be by yourself, it's still roleplaying. Now, to say there's different types of rp is something different altogether.
