You joined SL not many days ago and you're already pretty good at building houses?
My answer to your question, though, is no. _____________________

The prefab home market is a pretty crowded one, so it's not likely you'll sell a ton of houses right away. However, if you enjoy building homes, you should go for it.
Go visit some of the best-known prefab builders and get a sense of what kind of features people expect in prefabs (and also a sense of the outstanding quality of what's already in the market!). Build a few models, give them away to your friends for testing and feedback. and when you've got a couple models ready, give launching a business a shot. Because of the crowded market you'll have to do some legwork in promoting them - send samples to bloggers, advertise through various channels and so on - but as long as you're having fun with it and don't expect huge things overnight there's no reason not to give it a shot. ETA: What Lear said. ![]() _____________________

The answer is that any one can build a house. You can slap the prims together and walk inside. They may not be straight. The textures may not be realistic, but you won't fall through the floor, and your structure can come out architecturally interesting with some imagination.
The problem is finding land on which to put a house (The house is close to free. The land is not.) and the fact that you are competing with the sandbox. |

How can we know without seeing them?
If you really want folks' opinions, take a bunch of pics, put them on Flickr or somewhere, and post a link. I buy low-to-moderate priced prefabs that have copy/mod perms to save time or see how someone did something that interests me. I may buy a whole prefab just to get a single window, if I want it in a house I'm building just for me. So, if you have something interesting or different about yours, definitely go for it. |

I sell a skybox - and my opinion is that the market for this is very stiff.
I get very few sales despite everyone who's seen the thing giving it very high marks. I suspect there are merchants who get a lot more sales than me - some of whom are better, many of whom are worse, in quality. Yes, I do have a high opinion of my own quality... ![]() If you're entering the market, its going to be very tough getting off the ground. 1. Others have been around for years. 2. The number 1 path for new merchants has just been made extremely hostile to small and medium sized comptetitors, and even more so hostile to new merchants. 3. The other avenues for entry are only just now starting to see an opportunity to take the place of the number 1 (xstreet), and it will take time for one of the competitors to become 'viable' enough. Right now there are too many of them and merchants and customers are too split. 4. People don't need that many homes. You get a 512 plot, you put a home down on it - at ground or in the sky, and you don't need another. Some people get into having several, but at that point they start looking for specialty builds for the others - low prim, tailored theme, or what ever. If I made clothing - each outfit I made would help my sales of other outfits. If I make houses - each house I make -competes- with the other houses I make. It only barely helps my sales in that my work pops up in search more often - but the average customer is not a repeat customer. So... consider all of that before getting into it. _____________________

Gosh, am I right in you wanting parents, partner and flat mate and now wishes to sell houses all in about a week?
The only way you will find out if people want to buy your houses is to put them on sale, though you would really need land to display them as they aren't the sort of objects people buy without seeing first. The best way is using a large build rezzing vendor unless you can afford the amount of land would need to have them all rezzed at once. To sell you not only need to build and texture well, but to have your own style, preferably one that not too many people doing as a lot of competition in the market place in SL. It takes a lot of time and commitement to build up a business, it doesn't happen over night. Thing is, by seeing your threads, you will have probably moved onto something else by next week ![]() _____________________

That is beautiful, Sable.
I must say that, even though there seems to be a lot of competition among house builders, a lot of them just aren't that good. I recently looked for a skybox and, HOLY CRAP, there are some ugly ones out there. Plain old boxes with textures stretched beyond recognition and bizarre room layouts that make you wonder how you'd ever furnish it. Or it looks like something out of The Jetsons, which isn't my style but apparently everyone else. Don't get me started on the ones that come complete with strip club furniture and tasteful (or otherwise) nudes hanging on the walls. Even I could build something like that, but I wanted some thing better and something cozier. Price wasn't really an issue. It may be a crowded market but, at least as far as I checked into skyboxes, it's not a high quality one. _____________________

Wow - what does it cost to heat that thing, not to mention furnish it? We spent quite a bit furnishing it. I love giving tours and if I am logged in, you are certainly invited to im me if you want to come and see the inside. If you do come by our sim and we not there, you are welcome to cam inside and look. I have a security orb as it became necessary due to some rather nasty encounters we had with some of the visitors. @Brann, thanks for the compliment. ![]() _____________________

If you really want to build houses don't get discouraged. Even if you don't sale them it will be good practice until you figure out something else you like better.
Even Sable with her lovely house had to start somewhere ![]() |

Gosh, am I right in you wanting parents, partner and flat mate and now wishes to sell houses all in about a week? But what she REALLY wants to do is direct. ![]() Seriously though, like several others have said, there's no way of knowing if you have an item that will sell unless you just put it out there and try to sell it. Go for it. |
