Whoever is serving the stream and can see IP addresses in the media server connection log. In parcels where the media stream can be set by a scripted object, it could be anyone.

I have never understood peoples paranoia about alts either from the hiding the alt side or the detecting the alt side. I have always taken the tac of as long as me and my alt are not harassing anyone or otherwise breaking the TOS who cares that I have 2 toons up at the same time.

Very early in my SL, before I knew you could run two clients at the same time, I had a partner and a best friend that would frequently be in front of me at the same time, often engage me in conversation at the same time and ask me questions about the other in IM. When I broke-up with my partner, my best friend was right there with an understanding ear and a shoulder to cry on.

It took me almost a year to find out that my ex-partner and my best friend were in fact the same person. When I found out it was emotionally devastating in many many ways. For a very long time after that I found it impossible to make new friends on this platform, always wondering who might be coming at me with an alt to screw with me. Still, to this day, I am extremely reserved in making new personal connections on this platform. I would say the experience changed completely the way I view people in SL.

That might not explain everyone's paranoia, but it is the reason for mine.

There's nothing wrong with having alts, I have a bunch of them myself. There's a lot of wrong people can do with them, tho.

I have a "few" alts too, but rarely have 'em online at the same time - bandwidth issues.

To address Pie's post above - I have one hard & fast rule for my alts, they never interact with my friends, unless they know it's "me".

If I am logged onto two at once and we're in different regions, I keep one window maximised, and one slightly smaller, so that the chat from the window in the back shows. Ya know, just so I know if someone talks to me. Um, one of me. If both are in the same location, people who know me are aware, others will know if they pay attention or read profiles. If I meet someone who knows me on one account while being on the other, I will let them know unless were just walking past each other in a store or something. Most of the time when I have more than one logged on, one or twoof them are camping for stuff they don't really need anyways.

The people who own the stream...

I rent a stream and there is no way to know IP addresses of people on it, it does however show how many are connected and if 5 people are in the sim and only 3 show up as hearing stream, I can assume 2 are alts or are just not liestening.....

But renting a stream (shoutcast) I can not tell, and I really dont want to either. And I think it would be pretty unprofessional for anyone owning these streams to tell anyone someones IP....

and no one has ever told me or explained to me how you can...

In reply to this, I understand 100%! Very close experience for me.

There are people who set up "silent" media streams deliberately to track people (not just alts, they can cross-reference IP addresses with IP addresses logged on wikis and forums or in archived email messages), usually with a scripted object to log when people teleport in to a sim and cross-reference that with IP addresses showing up in the streaming media log. When they changed the way video streams worked one of the people complained in the blog comments that this didn't let her "IP ban" people from her sim any more... I would guess she's switched to using audio streams now.

but a lot of people in this thread sure seem to have experience with playing them. :)

I'm technoratti, I know because I know the connections.

the only time you'll ever find me on twice in the same place is because I'm testing permissions, or running a known bot (because I'm building a clothing catalog bot)

AFAIC social head games are just a way to disguise empty lives and poor social skills. I'd rather be obviously unimportant and asocial then pretend to be my own best friend... that's an alt game.

I also have a low opinion of people that use alts to try to game roleplay systems for added benefits.

alts do have plenty of good uses... peace while working on a project, testing, useful bots (I'll leave the definition of useful up to the reader). exploring different personality traits that may have repercussions for your main in social settings (especially RL identification) and others..

personally I know how to ID alts... I just don't care to.

I suspect some people running camping places might ban you from their place if they detect it.
