Still in my "stream of consciousness" mode of thinking... A good friend and I went to one of the "Tales From the Crypt" horror movies years ago. The first vignette began with 4 men entering a rather murky looking spot and realized they were trapped there (wherever "there" was). They sat down and each one began to tell a story. Later I said to my friend that the beginning of the movie seemed a bit implausible. If I found myself in some place in which I was trapped, I'd be trying to find a way out and probably doing some Grade A screaming, not sitting down to share tales. My friend spent a year in England as an exchange student and said, "That's a very plausible British response - no way out of here; we might as well just make the best of it." (Apparently the movie was British made.) I never forgot that. Nothing to do with the topic per se. ![]() Pep (who just worked the problem out with a pencil and paper) _____________________

Quoted from the top of the 'Community' page on this website:....
"Welcome to the Second Life world. We are a global community working together to build a new online space for creativity, collaboration, commerce, and entertainment. We strive to bridge cultures and welcome diversity. We believe in free expression, compassion and tolerance as the foundation for community in this new world." I couldn't have put it better myself! _____________________

Maybe it can even bridge the gap between New York and Minnesota...
New-Yorker: "YOU CRAZY ASSHAT, WHAT ARE YOU DOING?" Minnesotan: "Don't want to be picky, but I wouldn't use a welder that close to the gas tank, myself." _____________________

LL want to tie SL to external activities, such as business meetings, because they (LL) want to be at the helm.
The problem with in-world activities is that too many of them have the phrase "...provided SL people turn up" implicitly added to any statement that describes their value. You can create an island to advertise your brand provided SL people turn up. You can create your dream world provided SL people turn up. You can promote your real-life band - provided SL people turn up. If the people don't show, none of these really have much value. Unfortunately, LL have no way to influence what SL people turn up to, which means that an important part of the platform is out of their control. The majority of the SL community, it seems, turn up to freebies, camping, clubs and sex. So LL want to find more uses of SL that don't have this issue. You can have a business meeting even if nobody else turns up (in fact you probably don't want them to). |
