From: Dove Randt My friend has been using metacard and she forgot a payment and they said they would publish her name on the secondlife website or something
Does anyone know what this means, or if her account would be closed or something if she didnt pay it, i kinda want to know too since I use metacard as well, well only started using it and never heard about that. If they were to publish your friend's real name as someone who failed to pay a debt, that sounds like a violation of the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act. And since it's a law that includes statutory damages and attorney fees, it's a case that may actually be well worth the lawsuit. And without even looking at the MetaCard site, it's a good guess that they are violating all kinds of banking laws. The FTC takes consumer complaints on those lines. Edit: Well, they are in Singapore, meaning that even though you could sue them for business they do in the U.S., touching any actual money just got a lot harder. Still, if they aren't following banking laws, the FTC can probably cut off their reach to U.S. targets.

I just... simply don't understand why anyone would need a 'metacard.' I mean, you need a bank account or a credit card to play Second Life. Why not just use that? The whole thing just seems completely unnecessary to me, unless I'm missing some subtle benefit to the average SLer.
And how are they managing to get retailers to sponsor the card? In real life retailers have to pay credit card companies for every transaction done with a given card. Why in the hell would Hippotech pay anyone per-sale transactions when their products are equally available to every resident on the grid?

From: Wildefire Walcott I mean, you need a bank account or a credit card to play Second Life. No you don't. You need one to buy L$, but you do not, ever, have to have a credit card or bank account tied to your Second Life avatar in order to log in.

From: Jezebella Desmoulins Not sure why anyone would agree to terms like that if they actually read them, so I'm going to guess in this case they didn't. I'm also going to guess that's true of most of their customers, because a reasonable person wouldn't choose to do business with a company that conducts business in such a manner. I read 'em. That's why I hit 'Cancel' and moved carefully away from the 'Metacard' Machine.....

Dove,
To get back on topic for a moment...
1. Have your friend settle her account immediately. 2. Then have her cancel her account. 3. I would also recommend that she abandon the avatar identity she used with MetaCard and create a new Second Life account. 4. Never ever do business with ANY company (except LL) that demands your Real Life AND Second Life identity information. ESPECIALLY if the company is run by Second Life residents who do not give you THEIR Real Life contact information. You are giving away potentially dangerous personal information to people you DO NOT KNOW.

Might I also add while on the topic of giving RL and SL away to persons unknown...
Do not take those in-world 'surveys'. They ask your RL and SL info, and promise lindens or real dollars...Risky at best and from what I hear they do not usually even pay out. If they default there is no way to enforce their promise to you...but they have your info just the same!
I wonder how many linden starved 'newbies' they get that way?
