My friend has been using metacard and she forgot a payment and they said they would publish her name on the secondlife website or something

Does anyone know what this means, or if her account would be closed or something if she didnt pay it, i kinda want to know too since I use metacard as well, well only started using it and never heard about that.

Naming names in any negative context is against LL's rules, so I doubt this would happen. And even so, this Meta thingie is a private scheme, isn't it? They have no sway with LL in getting an account disciplined.

Besides asking why on earth anyone would WANT to have one, I'd say, if they threaten to post it on the Second Life website in some way, she should take it up with a Linden or file an AR against them.

*mutters* Then she should consider whether she would like to continue doing business with such a childish company.

Their terms look like this:

http://www.firstmeta.com/consumers/tnc

"If your account is in default, we may freeze or cancel your MetaCard™ and offset the outstanding balance by (i) debiting your MetaSavings™ account and/or (ii) charging your realworld credit or debit card.

We may report your default to Linden Lab® and publicly disclose your avatar identity. We may also close your account permanently and issue a negative credit rating."

So I think the avatar disclosure and reporting to Sl are separate actions. LL's disclosure rule doesn't really carry any weight on third party sites.

(and with something like this the card holder _agreed_ to the possibility of disclosure, it might be a little tough to get LL want to stick CS on that.)

Not sure why anyone would agree to terms like that if they actually read them, so I'm going to guess in this case they didn't. I'm also going to guess that's true of most of their customers, because a reasonable person wouldn't choose to do business with a company that conducts business in such a manner.

They could say what they want on other sites, but they can't do anything about having your SL account closed. LL would consider it a Resident to Resident dispute, one of the few things they've been consistent on, and wouldn't intervene.

One thing is certain, just on a personal level, reading that statement would be enough to keep me from signing up for that thing. They might as well have just come out and said they would have your cartoon legs broken.

It's interesting how many "My friend experienced _________" posts have been popping up lately. Your friend wouldn't happen to be your own alt, would it?

In any case, as Brenda said, MetaCard is a private service, not affiliated with Linden Lab in any way. They have no power to post anything to the Second Life website. They could, of course, post anything they want on their own website, though.

I actually never heard of MetaCard before this thread, but after looking into it, I would say that this sort of badgering, if true, is just one more item on a very long list of why I'd never ever want to do business with the company. For me, the instant turnoff would be their daily percentage rate of .11-.17%. Do the math, and that comes out to between 49% and 85% annually! That's insane. In RL, it would be usery, which is highly illegal. You'd get a better rate from a street corner loan shark.

Beside that, the credit limit is ridiculously low, less than US$20 worth of L$ for the basic card, and less than $40 worth for the "gold" card. Not only do such piddly amounts make the whole thing just plain silly, they also paint the fees as ridiculously high in comparison. Imagine if a RL credit card with a $5000 limit cost you $300 a month to have before you even use it. And to avoid that fee, you need to spend $500 every month, on which the company will charge you 50% in annual interest. Need I say it again? That's insane. Frankly, it's one of the worst deals I've ever seen, online or off.

But even if the interest, fees, and credit limits were actually reasonable, there's still the fact that Linden dollars are dirt cheap, and can be bought through regular channels by anyone at any time. I can't understand why anyone would ever see a need for an in-world credit card. Buy Linden dollars with any RL credit card, and you'd come out way ahead of where you'd be with MetaCard. The math behind MetaCard doesn't benefit anyone but MetaCard. Use your money in smarter ways.

This is what you get when people who should be on the Teen Grid get to sneak past the "Are you 18+?" and run businesses on the main grid. :(

What does that mean exactly, I wonder? Is it "Joe Avatar is a deadbeat" or is it "Joe Avatar aka Joe Realname" is a deadbeat. Do you have to give them RL details when you sign up?

 I thought maybe this was targetting people who can't use a credit card for whatever reason, but if you need one to join this scheme, WTF is the point? What's the hook?

The hook would seem to be that you don't have to pay for the L$ until after you've spent them, as compared to having to buy them in advance. I guess "I would gladly pay you Tuesday for a hamburger today" is too hard for some to resist even when the interest rates are insane.

I don't see the point of using such a card. Instead of giving your credit card info to a reputable rl company, you are giving your info to who? And they'll do what?

bzzzzzt, wrong answer.

Sounds like one of those 'paycheck advance' places in a way.

Why do business with a nasty place that puts your av in public stocks (the neck-lock kind).

And yeh all the teen grid people would use this most likely...but I thought it was not legal or binding if a minor signs a contract?
