And yes, I know that the title alone will make a lot of guys browse this, but it really is the women's comments I'm more interested in, because to me it is more of a 'woman' thing. The thread about look-alike AVs and a situation from last night prompted this thread/query.

Last night, I popped over to the Forum Hangout. It isn't very crowded, I'm dancing (Tango on the ceiling is such fun), a lit bit of chatting, a bit of IM, a bit of Truth or Dare. Then I notice a new arrival and promptly say Hi, before she has even fully rezzed for me. Then, in IM, the guy I'm dancing with says "wow, she's wearing an outfit that looks a lot like yours".

AAAGGGG, a woman's worst nightmare (mine at least - RL or SL). I quickly cam over to her; she is just finishing rezzing for me and yes, she is wearing the exact same skirt outfit in the exact same color. Oh, the horror.

Now, luckily, she has an entire room that must rez for her and since I'm dancing on the ceiling that gives me another few seconds before she will probably see me. And thankfully, SL makes changing outfits so easy. So, I very quickly go into inventory and change my outfit to a different style, maintaining the all-black color scheme so it isn't extremely obvious that I'm changing. In less than a minute all is well again within the SL universe and most were never even aware that a crisis was in the making.

Now, in RL at least, this is quite often the ultimate taboo for a woman and most of us hope that we never have to deal with that situation. Whereas, if a guy shows up somewhere and dozens of other guys are dressed the same, his normal thought is "cool, I have good taste". I have thought those words in SL when I have seen another woman wearing an outfit that I have and immediately followed the thought with "I am so glad that I did not wear that tonight".

So, we finally get to my question: Is this an issue for you in SL? If you show up somewhere and there is another person wearing the same thing, or another arrives wearing the same thing, do you change clothes or maybe leave or just ignore it (because this is only SL after all)?

I'm a bloke, but I spit feathers if someone is wearing the same clothes. Fortunately, as I'm so sartorially elegant, such unfortunate coincidences are few and far between ;)

I tend to have shopped at mainly "older" designers a lot of newer people haven't heard of; so this is a bit rare for me.

That and I'm not a huge fashion plate.

BUT ..

It has happened to me a couple times, and yes I change as soon as it does.

Usually Ill say something like "Hey I like your outfit" as I'm rezzing into a new one.

If she noticed my outfit it can lead to some LOLs :)

I have a lovely Blaze outfit that I don't wear at all anymore because of this issue - same outfit, same color, everywhere. You know the one, I'm sure.

Oddly, I seem to get more compliments when I wear one of my oddly-assorted freebie madness outfits than I get when I wear real outfits.

Maybe people just pity me.

I think the first one rezzed gets dibs on wearing the outfit. Any 'identical' rezzy that follows needs to do the changing. I really don't mind either way, as long as you don't comment on my 'newbie' looking avatar.
Then again, if I rez in after you, the fact that a 'yellow' skinned av is wearing the same thing as you would probably be mortifying, so you'll have to change.
Win-win for me, Yay!

in RL or SL i don't care if we have on the same thing. THEY can change, because i will not.

also, in RL i would look waaaaay hotter - so in a way, i wish it would happen. :p not too likely tho... i have ym own style, and few would ever mix-n-match the combos i come up with.

Very occasionally I see other women in the same outfit as me. It doesn't really bother me. I have a rather nice light blue trouser-suit with diamond shaped holes all down the outsides of the legs. It was er....a freebie (shhh!). I went somewhere where another woman was wearing one but she was rather plump so I think it suited me better!!!

Either way but in SL I would change mainly cos I have sooo many lovely clothes it's not a great hardship.

In RL if I turned up at a party with the same outfit as someone else it's not as though I could just pop off and change.

Mind you on the rare occasion I see someone wearing something that I own..yes I do compaire myself to them and of course I ROCK!!!

You know what's worse? I was TPing around with my male alt and hit up a certain skin store. I had just bought him a new AO as well, and was quite enjoying watching his moves when I realized, there was another guy standing not very far from my alt with the same AO. Even worse, the AOs were in sync no matter how many times I tried restarting mine. I was horrified. I'm female in real life, so that could have some bearing on that I suppose. Add in the fact that since we were both shopping at the same skin store and had about the same builds for our bodies, well, it was really awkward...we could have been mirrors of eachother nearly, minus the clothing and accessories.
Anytime I see anyone wearing the clothing I am wearing in SL, I change...can't stand that.

I've never had that happen to me, mostly because I rarely wear outfits as sold...I like to mix them up.

I am bumping you to an 8.5 on the Official Trout Measuring Instrument of Sluttiness. You are an enigma - on the one hand a sweet, gentle, intelligent woman who we would like to wrap up in our arms and protect, and on the other, a temptress to whom we would like to do all sorts of unmentionable things.

Congratulations and shame on you! You are a bit of a slut.

i have been in situations several times where girls see how im dressed and then immediately change their clothes to something similiar. or this is fun. they will stand in appearance right in front of my avatar trying to change their sliders using my avatar appearance as a template. none of this is very annoying. its somewhat flattering if at times inconvienant. what does bother me is when they purposefully change into the exact outfit im wearing so that we will match like twins. especially when i never met them before that moment lol but i try not to be rude, i humor them for like 30 minutes and then discreetly change my outfit without making a fuss.

I haven't had that happen yet, thankfully. But I tend to mix and match a lot of my outfits. I also shop at many of the lesser known, upscale stores now. One of my favorite stores, I am never going to tell the name of, because it has small inventory, and I've bought nearly everything they have lol.

I think sometimes, this happens mostly with freebie things. Gowns particularly for instance. I see duplicates of those all over the place. Or lingerie. Geez, it's amazing how many times I've seen the same silks or corsets.

The longer you're inworld, I think you begin to develop your own style, and it becomes more difficult for people to look like you.

But yes, you should have gotten dibs on that one for sure :) You had it on first! Was generous of you to change!

I have no doubt that I look way better in it. :D

It wasn't a typical freebie, but one of the nicer gifts from a group. Her profile put her at less than 3 months inworld, and while she could have been an alt of someone more established, I do have 6 months of accumulated shopping in my invenotry and therefore more outfits than I know what to do with anyway. Besides, changing just gave me the opportunity to show the guy I was dancing with soemthing a bit sexier. ;)

I love to shop. I have appx 1 month in world experience, but I've been to a lot of places and I have clothes, but not enough, I need more.

I started reading SL fashion blogs right away and that's where I've found a lot of my stuff. I always get freebies but I'm trying more to mix things up and not wear the same outfits.

And I change all the time, sometimes several times a day. So far I haven't run intno anyone with my exact outfit I'm wearing but I have seen some in outfits I have.

Sometimes I'll tp in some place to see what people are wearing and then change to try and fit it.

I'm just another that is fashion blog addicted and love to mix n match the things I buy. I have some older inventory from a long time ago (yea yea 2nd main, ty ty for noticing) and some of those are, luckily, discontinued so I rarely see anyone in them. I like to take pants from here, top from there and jacket from way over in that little corner over there to make up my outfits. If it happens someone comes in wearing the same thing, I would be more shocked than eager to change. I would have to pounce and ask if they were watching me put my outfit together! ;)

 Maybe I'm not a real woman? I don't mind AT ALL if someone's wearing the same outfit (which is hard to do anyway both in SL and RL because I'm a mix and match fanatic) - I even find it intriguing-apparently, someone then has good taste!

i have over 900 complete outfits and i would be in trouble if i tried to take the time to mix them all into different outfits. plus to be honest, alot of outfits look better the way they were designed to be worn. you can run into all kinds of problem with prims or jacket lengths etc etc when you do that. i do occassionally buy things with the intention of making outfits into them out of different pieces but usually i buy those items separate to begin with. like random skirts or tops that i think are very nice but dont come in a specific outfit. i wouldnt have enough time to mix it up as much as i might want to but i can really appreciate that idea. you can make very interesting outfits out of different pieces and in a way its completely unqiue because of how you decide to wear it.

I have lots of Silent Sparrow outfits, and they go together as mix and match so well that hyasynth, the creator, even sometimes gives out group freebies that consist of a jacket from this set with trousers from that and other details from other sets....that works quite well. But I also never put them in "outfit" folders either-I just rummage through my 7k inventory and decide on the spot.... :D

This has never happened to me.
I hope it never happens, cause I will adopt the "bitch I was here first" attitude and orbit her ass. Yeah, I know, I know.
