Sort of reminds me of this lady they showed on television earlier who not give candy to children whose parents were voting for Obama, because they all are liars and thieves by her definition. Just bizarre example of taking one's opinions and discussions way too seriously in real life but it happens here too.

From: Briana Dawson Do you dislike it when you have a disagreement with someone on the forums and they IM you in-world to tell you they resent your remarks and then drop their object full of Chats/Pics/Proof on you?
Well it just happened to me last night. So now I feel rather put off to engage in threads where this person is leading the Openspace "Spare LL" charge.
I want to remark and discuss and exchange and disagree all here in the forums. If you want to talk about the topic in-world, then make the offer in the thread, orr send a PM. But please, do not follow the person in-world with your disagreement to prove your point as well as let them know you 'resent' their words - its kind of stalkerish.
It is fine and dandy to converse about forum stuff in-world, i am not saying not to, i just think it needs to stay here (in the forum) and not be pursued in-world unless invited - especially if it is just to tell someone "hey i resent what you said".
Get over it. I totally agree with you here, its a shame that some people can't discuss without going off the deep end and taking it in world to

From: PeterPan Price If you have a personal disagreement or issue with someone, then surely IM is the right place to try and resolve it.
Sending an IM (even if its rude) is hardly tailing or stalking. If someone wants to be rude to me, I think I would prefer a private message than a public one.
Many posts here are an airing of personal vendettas thinly disguised as a request for information. This is the reason we have forum IM,s.So you can IM someone here..Taking an argument to someone in world bypassing forum IM's is someone who feels the need to go beyond the discussion on this formate to take it to a more personal level for a more immediate responsive one.. if you get muted in the forums then they bring it to in world and have to be muted again..that is harassment. This is a forum which neatly contains it's threads which holds discussions on different subjects. if i follow someone around these forums going into other threads they post in airing my opinion about something from another thread to them that is annoyance and considered harassment and against the rules.. following someone to second life which this is the second life forums not second life like most think are the same but they are not the same. that is harassment. as shown in the community standards you have second life, the second life forums and the second life website. ======================================================== The Community Standards sets out six behaviors, the "Big Six", that will result in suspension or, with repeated violations, expulsion from the Second Life Community. All Second Life Community Standards apply to all areas of Second Life, the Second Life Forums, and the Second Life Website. 2.Harassment Given the myriad capabilities of Second Life, harassment can take many forms. Communicating or behaving in a manner which is offensively coarse, intimidating or threatening, constitutes unwelcome sexual advances or requests for sexual favors, or is otherwise likely to cause ANNOYANCE or alarm is Harassment.

From: Sredni Eel I do the same with particles. Can't stand them. Facelights don't bother me. Facelights don't bother me any more. I have attached lighting turned off

From: Shirley Marquez Face lights actually CAN spoil the ballroom experience.
Consider: the designers put together a structure with carefully placed mood lighting. Then avatars enter wearing face lights, and the effect of the structure's lighting disappears or gets distorted because the viewer can only display the six nearest lights. . I can see that, but since I keep everything on midday so I can bloody see everything inworld, facelights simply don't show up for me. Heck, I didn't even know I had one for the longest time. I bought some hair from Sirena, and I guess it all comes with the facelight. Shows how much I notice them, huh?

From: Sredni Eel I posted something in here a while ago about Avilion, and got an IM from the sim owner a couple of days ago telling me my opinion was half cocked and misinformed. Long and short of it is, I think she's full of shit and told her not to ever contact me again. Of course I received the coveted banning from the ballroom.
Go me!
By the way, all I said was "the music there sucks so I keep it turned off, it's laggy, and they get their panties in a wad over people with face lights."
You should have seen the picture she sent me. Apparently you have to have some advanced setting turned on to even see anything she was harping about.
This is how rudeness escalates. I don't excuse her response at all. It would have been far more professional for the owner to have done nothing. On the other hand, there are formal ways to criticize and less formal ways. You might have said "I dislike their music, so I keep it turned off." Or "they overreact to people with face lights." I'm not saying that you crossed a line, nor am I saying they wouldn't have reacted just as poorly if you'd phrased things differently. What I'm suggesting is that one way to help reduce the amount of rudeness is to set an example by being more formally polite. From: someone Frankly, I find their claim that face lights ruin the enjoyment of the ballroom is pretty silly. It never bothered me if someone had a face light on or not.
As others have pointed out, it's important not to judge technical issues such as this solely on your own experience People have different systems, with different performance characteristics, and are visually sensitive to different things. It's their parcel, their rules. That doesn't mean it's ok for them to be rude about it, but it is ok for them to be strict about it.

From: Alicia Sautereau last person that did that to me didn`t appear in search soon after /me smiles and waves at Alicia. /me slowly walks backwards toward the door afraid to turn his back. On an only slightly more serious note: I've never understood why so many people can't grasp the concept that it's okay if someone doesn't agree with you. Everyone has their own opinion and the world would be a sad place if we all thought the same. I guess I've never rattled anyones cage enough to invoke the kind of reactions I'm reading about here. However, I promise to try harder in the future. No more Mr. Nice Guy. Also, good advice from Brenda, always save that last bullet. Just in case.

That could be fine, but these examples don't sound like someone trying to resolve it. They sound like people trying to just be annoying or get even. Sometimes, they just don't know when to stop beating a dead horse. At best, they're trying to have the last word. But with many of the disagreements here, the best response is to just say "let's agree to disagree." Preferably in public.

The reason why its happening here is because its happening in reality. There is a trend to display great emotion and anger towards anyone who causes a wave or ripple or who just doesnt agree with the general opinion of a group. I am thankfully self-employed but have to work with some people who must lead the most miserable of private lives because their public persona is dreadful. In SL I have had the bitter IMs also. And the threats. The Forums do seem to be toning down that "snippiness" which was very evident a few months ago. My answer to all this is to always wear Dolce and Gabbana perfume or Guerlain whenever I visit offices containing these workers but the office bans perfumes. As I talk to them they stink of cigarettes but I smell of flowers.

As the now thankfully ended Election Season has shown. at least in this country, we have grown to be intolerant of those with differing opinions and ideas, while at the same time clamoring for our right to express ours. We want our rights preserved, even at the expense of the rights of others.

Mute is your friend in world. Ignore is your friend on the forums.
Some people simply won't take "I disagree" as a valid answer. Fortunately, it's easy to make the problem go away.

I wouldn't take any forum argument to another venue, and I'd pretty mucj ignore anyone who does. Sometimes it gets heated and passions rise, I'm just as guilty as anyone else in this reagard, but I generally view the forum as entertainment, just like SL itself. I don't go to other forums or online gathering places save for SLU, but in my relatively short time online, I try not to take anything said on these forums too seriously, and try not to take what I say too seriously either. Walker Moore's signature is still a perfect summation for me.

I use the forum whilst at work when it's quite. if it's a slow forum day then sometimes it's good to antagonise the locals, it makes it more interesting which passes the time if there is a heated debate. However I would like the annoyed poeple to stop being annoyed during my out of work hours as I don't want them contacting me in world. Most inconvenient.

I am often known as Fu (short for Elgyfu, of course) - which I like I just looked at Brenda's signature. I read it a couple of times. Then I understood it. *cries* Mind you, Elgy sounds sillier, doesn't it? When people say it to me on voice is sounds like they are calling me 'algae'.

heh people that track me down in other venues to continue arguming discussions had elsewhere soon find they don't like me... RL or SL... there is a time and place for certain things, people at work or play shouldn't be sought out, unless that's where the problem occured. period. slight exception to ongoing endmic problems From: Porky Gorky Yeah I made a flippent comment about a certain texture store owner a few months back and got sent an essay in world telling me exactly where I had gone wrong in life. I agree it should stay on the forums. lmao, I bet I know EXACTLY who that was =) @shirly: any designer that builds something beautiful to look at, yet doesn't consider that it will be used by people who also want to look their personal best (and facelights can make a huge difference, when used subtley) or denies the use of such things knowing their popularity... has a few design issues to work out IMHO you can't get mad at people when you make something to use, then they use it in a way you don't like, even though they're using it in a commonly expected way. it'd be like open a store called backwards, then getting mad at customer that walked normally... first and foremost it's a store.
