Malicious object deletes entire account?

A friend tells me today that someone she knows had her entire account wiped, by receipt of some kind of malicious object. Is this possible? Her listing is gone from search, all inventory and linden money gone... as usual, there's no telling what's "true", but it sounds pretty nasty. No word yet on what the object was that did this.

This sounds highly implausible. It is possible that someone may setup a phishing scam to get people's passwords, and then use them to delete accounts though. I can't think of any reason why they would go to that much trouble though. Unless it were a simple fraud and they delete the account once they have cleaned it out, so as to buy themselves a few more days grace before the victim notices their money is gone.

Sounds a lot worst than that if the the inventory is gone to.

If you granted debit permission to an object, and it cleared you out of a million lindens or so, might that trigger the illicit transaction detection system?

If it's true, it sounds more like password theft..

The thing is Evie, these things always happen to people who are Known by other people. As soon as you start getting these "Six degrees of Seperation" stories, you need to take them with a Grain of Salt. You can Guarantee you are not getting ALL the details of the Incident Accurately Even if the event actually took place at all.

We had a story like that some time ago, and it was the deletion of Half a building that was supposed to be due to some Mysterious griefer object. the story was related by the partner of the person to whom this happened. After much doubt, and Further questioning it was revealed the Partner had found a misplaced prim on their property, and Messed up when they tried to return, or delete it, and deleted the Building themselves. The story of the griefer object was to prevent them from looking Foolish.

It didn't work.

Of course if you give someone your password they can do whatever they want with your account. Otherwise no.

The QuickTime bug sounds pretty bad also. if they can really take over your avatar as they say then maybe they can take/delete your inventory also. Not sure.

From: someone
Once the malicious file has been viewed by the victim, the attacker has complete control over the victim's computer - and Second Life avatar. At this point the exploit could make the avatar do anything they like.

Wait a minute! Could this be why I was going around quacking like a duck earlier?

That might have something more to do with your forums title. "Certified Nutcase". :D

I doubt an object did it, but if the person was foolish enough to give out their password, and someone else decided to use it to scam other people, it's quite likely the account could get booted.

Why a duck?

Cause squirrels (also nutcases) don't quack.

This also happened to my friend Gutterblood Spoonhammer. Took them about 2 months to give his account back, and when they finally did they said it was an accident....

No joke.

It echoes. Some scientist in the UK researched this for ages to test it out. Tragic really - it put him in an asylum. The strain was so much that he went quackers.

/me runs away.

I lived in the countryside up until last year. There was a small nearby lake at the end of a valley. Duck quacks do echo. They also sound like human voices when heard from a distance.

It's like on old newsgroups etc where trolls or other angry posters used to threaten to wipe one's hard drive. I always took those with a pinch of salt!

Worse yet, I heard from the friend of a friend of a casual acquaintance twice remove that there's a malicious object out there that will steal all your L$, delete your account, e-mail profanities to your grandmother, reformat your hard drive, let the air of your car's tires, turn your lawn brown, give you acne, and make your hair fall out in RL. So be careful when accepting debit permission! :p
