I find it very interesting that many people don't think it's necessary because it certainly _used_ to be seen as such; to overcome the problem of having to snub your friends who want to hang out while you're busy working - but then when the work is done, you have no friends anymore. The interesting thing is if this has happened because people have become more tolerant (good) or because it's now difficult or impossible to both create and socialize as a single human, let along a single avatar (bad). I used to socialise and work but the last of my original group of friends left SL over 2 years ago now. I am certainly more productive now they are gone. I tend to have 'aquantances' now rather than friends. Most of the time im too busy to chat and will tell them so, or just ignore them. Im the same in real life though, if the phone rings ill answer it if im not busy and ignore it if I am, where as most people stop what they are doing to answer the phone. Drives my wife mad  _____________________

I do have alts (not many) but I couldnt survive long in sl if I didnt have alts to switch to - when one alt gets in trouble. I switch to another one of "me" for a little while. Each of my limited sisterhood is a reflection of Jig and defines my varied personality in real. We are all equally annoying and precocious, by the way, and confound or tickle my partner's fancy.

I never understood that mindset that in SL we are supposed to be available and visible to everyone at everytime. Deciding not to spend time with a particular friend, or no one at all is not a snub in my book. RL friends don't get offended when you aren't at their beck and call, at least not mine. Why should it be any different here? My answer: I socialize and build with the same avatar, but it's annoying to get spammed with business messages when I'm 'hanging out', and with social messages when I'm working. It's like having a cellphone surgically implanted... and no "off" button. I have tried working as an alt but the permission system gets too annoying, and so I end up putting up with it and use my alts as backups. _____________________

I only use my alts for creation help, i.e help with getting poseballs correctly positioned or pics that need more than 1 av in. My alts don't socialize, they are logged in for what they are needed for then logged out again.
