I'm tired of seeing my L$ balance sitting up there in the top right corner.

Is there a way to turn it off?

You could always try making it larger and as a result - be proud of it!

It dropped a digit a while back and that made it even more annoying.

If I could make it go away and replace it with the bandwidth and packet loss display we used to have that would be extra cool.

I used to have a VCR player that would distort the top of copy protected video tapes. I did tape a cover for the top of the display onto the screen. Better than seeing distortion.

You could modify your browser to not display my posts. Firefox is open source.

Also, you could choose to do something other than read this forum.

panel_status_bar.xml:

(Simplified)
From: someone
<panel ...>
<text ...>
parcel name goes here
</text>
<text ... tool_tip="Account Balance" v_pad="2" width="76">
Loading...
</text>
<button ... tool_tip="Buy currency" width="16" />

Change
tool_tip="Account Balance" v_pad="2" width="76">
to
tool_tip="Account Balance" v_pad="2" width="76" visible="false">
to hide the balance amount.

Change
<button ... tool_tip="Buy currency" width="16" />
to
<button ... tool_tip="Buy currency" width="16" visible="false" />
to hide the "Buy currency button"

(in both cases you just add visible="false", nothing else changes)

Save and log in and you'll have an empty space where it used to be. You can probably play with left & width some to make it smaller and increase the land description text.

Edit / Preferences, General, uncheck "Show search pane in overlay bar" hides the search bit in the top right corner and makes the packet loss and bandwidth bars visible again like it used to be.

Since I was looking anyway and people are annoyed by it:

Getting rid of the "Release Keys" button - panel_overlaybar.xml

I tried that once not too long ago and the stats display did not appear, although the search field did go away.

It's working in 1.20.8, though, thanks.

Thanks for the xml advice, I was always wondering how to get rid of the buy currency button since I never actually buy currency.

Apparently doing display:none, doesn't work, I copied and pasted exactly as you posted it first commenting out then removing it entirely, and no luck, granted I may be editing the wrong file, since I use the nicholaz edition it's ...\Program Files\SecondLife\panel_status_bar_nicholaz.xml ... I think.

I added "visible = false" to just the first change Kitty suggested and the button went away along with the balance.

Shame this will get overwritten so quickly.

It's kind of empty looking up there now. Too bad I can't have an FPS meter there too.

The old bandwidth and packet loss meters showed that values when you moused over them, didn't they?

Thanks for the information, I immediately edited out that annoying buy currency button since I never buy currency anyway, incidentally I learned two things in the process of editing this just fyi, 1) Nicholaz's viewer despite his statements to the otherwise and it's creaton of 2 panel xml files still uses the default xml files at least for panel_toolbar.xml, 2) attempting to comment out the old section when adding the new one (I tried this to make sure I didn't forget what I'd done in case I needed to reverse it) will crash the SL viewer as well as crashing the Nicholaz viewer (which as I said before uses the same files)

My balance is too big, a big Linden balance is a sign of bad economic judgement, not a thing to be proud of.

You could hide it; put most of it up for sale on LindeX at say, $L 250 per USD offered.

Odds are, it will just sit there for a long long time - failing that, you would cash in.

But otherwise, 'invisible' for the most part.

That 's the cheap way of getting a widescreen TV, also the LL workaround for the blog betting narrower.

If you're running in windowed mode just drag the window over to the right so it's partially off screen. Or if you are full screen just adjust the monitor settings. Duh!

The last time I did anything but spend my Lindens on stuff like clothes, GOM was still in existence. I bought a quarter of sim at the very peak of land prices and sold it all owing to performance failure and constant neighbor aggravation.

I've never used the Lindex.
