I installed and older version of the software this morning because it's really taxing my poky computer. I logged back in to find things haven't changed much and I'm still naked. Someone else must have noticed because he left me a red velvet and lace gown. Hmmmm ... kind gesture. If only I can figure out how to put it on. <eyes roll>

I'm trying to take tutorials, but the map for the first one (finding my own location) is nothing but a sea of solid blue with a tiny white dot inside a little yellow circle in the center. I think maybe that's not what it's supposed to look like. Hmmmm ... "curiouser and curiouser, said Alice"

When I figure out what I'm doing well enough to be able to ask for help, I will holler. Thanks everyone!

The "mirror" in front of which the naked women were doing calisthenics, later materialized into a sign that says "exit to second life" and the calisthenics appear to really be people jumping for joy when they get a question right on the tutorial. I'm now jumping for joy in the "search" room with my slip around my arse. I appear to be the only naked person so far today. Seems like the Lindends might have been wiser to start the tutorials with "how to get dressed," but hey, what do I know? I'm just the retarded chick who's been standing in the square for two days in her underwear! Besides, it's much more entertaining to have naked people complete the orientation tasks. It's like a Japanese game show. OK. I'll play along.

I tried dragging the "red lace gown" from the objects folder onto my avatar, but now I'm just a naked chick carrying a large box under her right arm. I have so much to learn.

Drag the box onto the ground and then right button click to edit, go to the content tab and then drag the items from the box to your inventory.

Really, SL hates wireless connections, so if you can possibly get wired, it might improve your sense of nakedness.

Hi Kaitie, I'm quite new as well, only been here for about four weeks and you're already aheah of me by finding these forums! I wandered around trying to figure out stuff for ages (alone) as I'm usually on at odd hours compared to most! Lol but I never had any nekkid issues in the beginning.
Wait till you start wearing boxes on your hand and stuff! the fun will surely start then.. just IM one of the people who have offered their time here to mentor you and you will be set.
Mostly I've found really kind and generous people, especially here at the forums and I'm willing to come meet you too if I'm on.
Gawd I wish I knew about the mentors when I first started! also there's help island where lots of old skool hang out and will answer questions.

Another bit of advice is to create a folder with a full outfit of shoes, clothing, and hair. That way, if you wind up in a compromising lack of outfit in a public area, you can drag it onto yourself.

I'm cracking up. I followed your directions, Raudf, to put the box on the ground and then open it, and here's what SL told me:

I was able to exchange the slip and undies for polka dot leggings to wear with my bra, (and if I say the bra is a halter top -- who's gonna know, right?). So I have something to wear when I get to Help Island, or wherever it is. This is fun!

Yes, you just learned that you can only place objects (that's what "rez" means) on land where the owner allows it. There should be a Clothing folder in your inventory that already has some clothes that aren't in boxes. The icon in the inventory should look like the clothing type instead of a box, then you can where it directly.
