I'm Naked

I'm brand new to SL. I just installed the software, and when it opened, it plopped me down (without my consent, I might add) into a large town square totally naked from the thighs up (I'm wearing my slip just below my butt cheeks).

I was relieved to see no one else was in the square to witness my humiliation when suddenly a large naked man walked up behind me and just stood there. Freaked me out, but it gets worse. Just when I thought I was about to get raped, I think he said, "oi" and walked away.

My bra and panties materialized at about the same time as a whole bunch of people did also. They're all naked. Yep. Everyone one of them is totally naked except for one chick who's wearing nothing but tennis shoes and a hair ribbon, and one big guy who is naked except for what I think are a couple of dog bowls on his feet.

It gets even worse. Apparently there is a large mirror on the outside edge of the square and the naked lady in tennis shoes and another naked lady are doing calisthenics in front of it.

I'm sure you think I'm joking, but I'm not. I'm standing in the middle of a square with my slip around my hips and the crack of my butt showing. Welcome to SL, Kaitie!

Uh, so is naked and retarded how everyone enters this world? Anyone got any pointers?

Okay, so now a sign materialized to tell me I'm on Orientation Island. I guess that's where SL sends all us new, naked people. I'm still in my bra and panties with my slip around my thighs. I can fly like that. Everything I or anyone else does is REALLY slow and jerky.

Internet connection is 11 Mbps. Is this connection speed or processor, and will an older version of the software be better?

no you are unfortunate enough to be coming into SL on a day when it is having a few hiccups (well ok, a LOT of hiccups). These things happen sometimes, just take comfort in knowing that YOU aren't naked your avatar is, and being new you havent gotten a skin yet so you aren't anatomically correct (I dont believe unless that has changed recently). And no one can rape you unless of course you allow them to. The guy was probably as embarrassed as you and the people doing jumping jacks are probably comfortable with the fact that their av is basically a paperdoll and nothing more.

Edit: Welcome to SL, hopefully things will be better tomorrow :)

Don't worry about it. Just find a nice nude beach to hang out on until it all blows over.

Just like RL - you come in naked and confused.

One might construe consent to being plopped down into a virtual world setting as having been given by registering an account, downloading and installing the software, typing in the account name and password, and clicking the connect button. That's an unlikely sequence of events to have occurred by accident.

Those wishing to get some idea of what happens when you first start could do a web search for such phrases as "what happens when you first enter second life". That one happened to produce a video on what happens when you first enter second life.

I'm somewhat surprised to find that I don't find a section in the first page of the Knowledge Base that describes what happens on your first visit for folks that haven't been in SL before, or who have just arrived there to find themselves confused or having trouble. The information might well be in there somewhere, but shouldn't there be links something like "Haven't entered SL yet? Want to know what to expect?" and "I just got in SL and I want some help!". LL claims to be real concerned with the first hour experience; it would seem they would have their primary company produced help source designed to make things as clear as possible for those who haven't started or who have just started.

I wish I could see the exact pages that new users see without starting an account. How can current users offer advice on the new user pages when they can't see the current version of them?

There weren't reflections in the mrror were there?

Welcome to SL. If you want to take the path of efficient acquisition of SL know how, check out the forums here, bookmark the Second Life wiki and the Knowledge Base, and consider joining a group like New Citizens and drop by the Shelter. Inworld mentors in the official mentor group are a good source of info as well, and there are even more people outside of that group glad to help with questions and problems.

Sounds like you and the others were experiencing technical difficulties.

I have to admit I love the way you typed up your post could help but laugh even though I know it wasn't a funny situation for you.

Normally when you arrive in SL you are fully clothed as is everyone else.

In addition the starter skin is Barbie/Ken style so naked just means flesh colored, really.

Perhaps try again during a non peak time and see if your clothes display properly?

I have real sympathy for anyone who signed up yesterday. I spent most of the morning trying to log in, and when I finally did, I ended up at Governor Linden's snow chalet, along with about ninety other people all as confused and lagged-out as I was. Teleport worked on the umpteenth try but instead of taking me home it took me to Dore welcome area. Same situation - full of people saying "Where am I? How did I get here?" At which point I gave up completely and just logged out altogether. Tried again after work and it did the same thing again.

I can't imagine how unpleasant it must have been for someone who was supposed to be on Orientation Island.

SL worked perfectly for *me* yesterday which meant I landed naked in quite a few places where I wanted to be . . .

I logged in to find myself replaced by a grey Ruth yesterday. I tried relogging and cleared cache but still no me, jut the grey Ruth. But eventually I got my proper self logged in.

I think I'm right in saying that new residents, when they first log in, are now naked for a few seconds. Is that right?

Hi Kaitie :) Welcome to SL and the forums.

Bad luck that you started on a difficult day. If it's any consolation you are no where near as confused as I was when I first logged in - back in the good old days of 2006! My avatar didn't rez at all! All I could see was my name hovering in the air and dozens of naked avatar shapes - made Orientation Island as crowded as a bot sky box! At least they had a body - half of them were standing in a T-pose adjusting their appearance as this was the only way to get some clothes on at that time.

Maybe we should start a thread about our first login experiences and give as much support and guidance as we can to new residents.

Don't be put off - it will get better, honest!

usualy when I see things like this happen on an orientation island I'm mentoring at it turns out to be someone makeing a new stack of camp bots (OP: don't worry about the terms, just ask if you don't know a term and we will be happy to explain)

It's kinda funny to see a row of nakid girls pop up slowely turning into the same new default avatar all with very simular names.

I was having similar problems all day yesterday. I could not log in to my home location, but I could teleport there afterwards.

Sorry you were having problems and like an earlier poster said no one can do anything to your avi without your consent.

Welcome to the forums and to SL,

LMAO

Ok...now that the tears are drying on my face and I can stop laughing....let me first say WELCOME! You did indeed begin on a day when the entire SL grid was having 'issues'

In world I am a mentor and I'd be happy to help you get aquainted with SL and all it's foibles and quirks....and amazingness. You can look for me and send me an IM by going to search (at the bottom of your screen)....go into 'people' and type my avatar name.....and when you see my profile you can send me a messege.

But have no fear...nekkid avatars cannot harm you! (only make you laugh)

Consider yourself lucky...try being a male avy and logging on and find that your a girl now....with breastisies...XD!! ohhh what a day I had that day...

A quick log off and a jump into the forums made me learn it was a SL hicup and I would return to being a male again soon....whew... (although I did enjoy having my own breastisies...LOL)

Normally, you would start off on a small island with a few basic tutorials you could go through about how to move, change clothes and the like.

What you witnessed is not normal, even for the weird world of SL. But it happens sometimes. The other people were just as dioriented as you, having been dumped to whatever area was running at the time instead of where they wanted to be. At least you will be familiar with the feeling if it ever happens again. Then you will be the one saying "oi" to the next new and confused resident :)

We have all been there. Welcome to the club!

But ... you have missed the opening tutorials and even if they are limited in usefulness, it may be hard to find the basics. If you need help understanding, jsut ask. We are mostly a very helpful group of people here.

When you get back in SL, search for "NCI" or "The Shelter" or, my favorite "Fourm Cartel Hangout." These are places you can meet helpful people who will get you familiar with the world of SL. Also, you could take up Milla Alexandre's offer and send her an IM when you can.

Normally I would just try and reach you tonight and take you around but I won't be near a computer. ... and there are plenty of people who would warn you away from me anyway ;)

Welcome to SL and the forums. And thank you for the funny story; adventures are never adventures when they are happening.
