Yes.
Yeah, that's my answer and I'm sticking to it. If you want an explanation, well. I love SL and it's fun when I'm in the mood for it. But it's also a self-supporting hobby which is always good. I'm also in here to hone my graphic art skills.... soooooo... Yes.

---- For fun only? [X] ---- For making money only [X]
I came here for the fun and am finding i need to also make money to enjoy the fun. I came back to SL to RP again in Gor but found that anything i'd need i'd have to pay for. Some things i've been able to camp for and others i've had to pay for. So i got a job as a dancer after finding a free skin and getting some hair cheap, now i was able to purchase a few things i needed for my RP.

I came for fun, then started to learn to build, which is awesome fun, later I might try and make money...which might be as well.
If the fun goes though, I'd leave, unless I was a tycoon, which I doubt, but if it was genuine income, I'd stay at it like a job.

Please only provide one answer by crossing [ x ].
Sorry, impossible to answer with those restrictions. Because I would have to check all three. My interests are not one-dimensional.
Fun? : If I didn't have fun in SL, I wouldn't be here. My first and best reason for coming to SL and staying here is that I have friends here who I can't socialize with anywhere else. If my friends left, so would I.
Making Money? : But if I couldn't earn a profit here with my businesses, I also wouldn't be here. I can't afford to dump $75 USD a month or more into a silly on-line virtual world, no matter how much I enjoy that social time with my friends. The money I earn in SL pays all my SL expenses, and provides my friends and I with a beautiful and fun place in SL to interact.
Other? : You left out having a venue for artistic expresson, learning, creating, and many, many other pursuits. All valid parts of why I am here.
If you think all of life is only about "Having Fun" or "Making Money" and that those two aims are mutually exclusive, I really feel sorry for you. Your future career will therefore be miserable, because you can't get paid for doing something you love to do. So sad. I love this answer. In fact, SL research itself for me is a fun not for other purposes, at least now. The reason of needing a specific answer is to find out whether SL world is sustainable. If all for fun and Linden Dollar supply figure is always positive, Linden Research Inc will be survivable (unless LL real-world cash inflow has problem). However, if many residents are for money, the SL future will not be decidable. I would not give the in-depth answer here (still in research), but I just compare Second Life world to our earth. What do you think for human if the earth has problem - bang!!!?

Jay, I think you might have gotten further by framing your three basic questions in a simple poll and not mentioning research. It's easy for me to be wise after the event but perhaps you didn't notice the forums have this feature? Posters tend to respond more positively to a poll (especially when pie is on the menu) whereas we are generally quite jaded with the implication that we're lab rats to be pumped for opinions in these quite regular surveys. As far as I am concerned, the only necessary SL economy involves buying lindens for upload and paying tier on my parcel. Many residents get by without any expense whatsoever. Apparently we are lab rats in an experiment anyway - however resentful we may be about being made to feel even moreso - so I think the contribution of their time and input is just as valid as those who fully engage in SL commerce.

I don't like polls OR surveys especially. But I am much more likely to answer a poll that has a specific question or issue which makes clear the person is an actual resident and cares about Second Life, as opposed to someone from some matchbook college wandering in here to poke, poke at our ribs.
Put another way, this is marketing research. Which means obfuscation and mendacity! (TM The Glass Menagerie.)
What self respecting 'university' would send its students to an internet forum!?

I came to SL 2 years ago from IRC on invitation from a SL resident. The main reason was to continue the rp in which I had participated for 12 years in a 3D environment. Then I met my (now-ex) partner. We had a wonderful time exploring SL for close to two years. While taking classes I discovered building and decided to open a small shop. From: Ephraim Kappler I also plan to run a small business because it makes sense to turn enough lindens to pay tier and upload fees. I'm painfully slow to start because doing it well requires time, patience and responsibilities that are just a little too close to RL for my taste. I will get there eventually but it will be a big experiment that could easily sour the whole experience for me. I was enjoying my little business at my speed but reading the "Advice on Sales" thread now seems like a race and I feel like I'm falling behind which is discouraging...and I recently split with my Partner. I'm not sure how much I'll enjoy SL again now. (Yes I know I sound morose and would appreciate no kicking me while I'm down.)

I was enjoying my little business at my speed but reading the "Advice on Sales" thread now seems like a race and I feel like I'm falling behind which is discouraging... Czari, I hope I'm not butting in here, but... I remember when you first posted here in the forums that you had started building and had decided to start an SL business. I've watched you post bits and pieces about it here since. One of the things I've always admired was how you ran your business in a way and on a scale that pleased you. Indirectly, you've been one of the influences that's made me think about selling some of the stuff I've made, though I haven't taken the plunge yet. Advice worth the paper it's printed on, but I'd encourage you to continue running your business in a way that's fun for you, and not to get caught up in a race mentality if that's not where you want to be. Make the business serve you, not the other way 'round. (And remember, that's advice from a non-business-owner and probably worth what you've paid for it... Hope things get better for you soon.)
