Simple question .... the ever popular Megaprims.... all of them, the giant spheres, endless floors, etc.... are those illegal to rez and use?

there not legal or illegal.

As long as they are not causing any problems, they are ok to use.

Rumor has it that sometimes they can affect physics, like gravity, and cause problems.

If they cause problems that get reported, the Lindens will take them away (or at least that's the party line). One can greatly minimize the likelihood of problems by keeping them phantom (and no cheating with llVolumeDetect), non-physical(!) and (of course) wholly within your own parcel boundaries.

One problem with megaprims that I've seen is that people will innocently try out a megaprim in a sandbox and fill the entire sim with one giant prim that is too big for them to select, or even see, and basically everyone below where that prim was rezzed is screwed.

the ones that are as big or bigger then a sim are pretty useless

the ones that are the exact size of a 512 lot or a 1024 lot are very usefull and dont cause problems

512 = 16x32

1024 = 32x32

a 1 prim floor vs 16 prims to cover a 1024 = god must love me to have givin me mega prims

Well... the ones up to the size of a sim are.

Unfortunately, there exist ones that are the size of 4 sims, 16 sims, and the entire grid. In my experience they don't actually extend that far, but they do cause odd things to happen within a couple hundred meters of their centers (at least INSIDE them... not sure about the very flat ones).

IBM uses them.. so when they stop using them i would be worried.. but alot of the major players use them

Electric Sheep
IBM

etc..

oh and ME! i use mega prims in alot of my builds.. I can say from first hand experience that if used properly they are a great tool. that being said. Any prim can be deemed illegal if used in a way to cause grief

Anything over 50 mts. becomes too cumbersome to handle, so that's where I draw the line.

The 20x20x0.05 is just lovely to use...I think there is a 40x40x40 cube that is somewhat useful too; the others are just too big for me to figure out anything cool to do with them.

I think Desmond Chang mentioned using a large one in Caledon in the future to simulate weather.

Question for Builders: Though they may be legal when not used for griefing, is it considered good or bad practice to use them?

I uses the 20x20x.5 for floors and ceilings, they save prims and are neat for texturing. If i was building sims, the long thin one for paths and roads would be useful. The builds i do dont call for anything larger than this, but i once frightened myself to death rezzing one in a sandbox which covered the whole sim (its dimensions were not named in my folder). Had to shout "sorrrrrrryyyyy!!!" to all the other builders and delete it quick. Very embarrassing.

I use the 20 by 20 flat ones on the edge of the sim and textures with city scenes to enhance the sim I am building, saves on prims and causes no problems

IBM is definitely a major player but ES is hardly a major player.

Link to free mega-prims on SLX
08-26-2007 12:04
The always courteous Mrs. Showdog Tiger asked for the SLX link for the free mega-prims that I mentioned, and I thought it would be nice to share with others:

http://slexchange.com/modules.php?name=Marketplace&file=item&ItemID=206333

There are actually several sets available on SLX, but I think this set includes all of the mega-prims. It includes a greater variety of sizes than is actually available, which are achieved through various cuts and such. It also includes a number of extra-tiny prims.
