Interesting, I'm seeing the picture frames in Camino on my Mac mini. I know I've installed simply a bargeload of fonts here, I must have included the right one.

Ooh, I've been waiting for a chance to post this!

"Similarly, some of the first educators and researchers in SL were a bit clumsy in their approach. There were early incidents in which Residents felt—rightly—that they were being spied upon or treated like guinea pigs rather than human beings. Imagine how you would feel if an entire class of students set up right next to your vacation hideaway, left trash lying around, logged your conversations, and posted them on the Internet with criticism and mean-spirited comments. This is exactly what happened to some early Residents. Things have improved greatly in the years since then, but sometimes SL Residents are still subject to that kind of inconsiderate behavior. For example, a constant stream of researchers (often students) posts on the Second Life official forums requesting that Residents please take their surveys. Most of these surveys include the same questions that have been asked over and over. Often they aren't spell-checked, or refer to SL as a game—a sure way to irritate a substantial number of Residents. Some Residents make a hobby of critiquing these surveys, pointing out how the questions and their wording make it clear that the researcher isn't familiar with Second Life. Some post outright that they are sick of badly planned surveys and suggest that the researchers log in and do their own research."

the report's purpose is to see if people do benefit from SL.

Sure they do. There, homework done.

You, sir, are one sorry, lazy fuck. Go pester someone else.

Honestly - if they are TOO LAZY to even read back through forums and notice how much most of us resent being picked at this way, for some homework assignment or other unknown purpose, what is the worth of their 'research' anyway?

Isn't it the first thing a researcher should do - research their intended subjects? Or is that just too logical.

Seems like it. :)

It ought to be clear by now, to anyone doing the slightest bit of background work, that the native guinea-pigs in these parts are getting somewhat restless!

It's difficult to believe that lecturers at university level would tell students they can gather accurate data on which to base any meaningful research from answers to surveys in this sort of online forum. Unless it's some kind of exercise to teach them the futility of such surveys. Is this really how things are done at universities these days?

*passes Aes a Coke, with two cherries in it, in a crystal glass*

Was just typing exactly that in a simliar thread. Lol!

So true, though. Actual research requires so much more. This isn't a full enough sampling, for one thing. Where are their credentials? Where is any indication of methodology? Where will results be posted if at all? Where the heck are all these 'researchers' coming from anyway?

In my opinion they amount to spam. Somewhere along the same credibility lines as the various headlines in my spam folder every day.

This points much more likely to (if not sheer spam from bored kidz) some intern at some company that is thinking idly of 'investing' in Second Life. If any professors are letting students get away with this drivel - I weep for the future. (Weep!)

Agreed. I wouldn't mind helping out and answering the occasional sensibly planned questionnaire that could be verified as genuine and contributing to something useful, but I suspect many of the surveys are just as you say.

This one of Noor's may or may not be genuinely for a university project of some kind, but if *all* of them saying they are, really are, then someone is falling down on teaching the basics of how to conduct meaningful research studies. Surely that would come first, before letting the students loose on the unsuspecting public? If not, it seems to me like a huge waste of everyone's time, inlcuding the students.

But what would I know, I'm only a guinea-pig. ;)

Did you notice that Jumpy got a ban and when he came back the posts he made complaining about it were removed? Ask around and I think you will find that several people have received short bans and warnings about their language, behavior and inappropriate images in the last month. These forums are going to become PG. I am going to help.

thaaaaaaaaaanks for those how answered my questionnaire ^^

why are you so angry every one!! 0_o

sorry, I don't know what happened before but certainly you misunderstood me

english is my second language
and I'm doing this for my english course about how to write a repot or a research
this questionnaire is a part of learning how to write a research(how to write and use a questionnaire in the research)
this questionnaire is requested by our teacher and since I chose this subject I must do a questionnaire on it

I was going to question the students in my university, but there are very few people who actually know SL
so, I thought of posting it here<<thought it was a good idea(but it turned out to be the opposite 0_o)

if you don't want to answer some of the questions about personal information you don't have to
and if you don't want to answer the questionnaire, please don't write things like that because I don't mean any harm.

this research is just to learn how to write a research <<it's not to study SL seriously

hope you understand

Lots of people seem a little angry on this board. I don't know if they are, but it seems that way.

You also kind of have to wonder about people that are so put off by answering a survey that they spend twice as much time bashing it, as it would have taken to answer it. At least I wonder. ;-)

You do know that you could face an AR for harassment over such, yes? Not necessarily from me, but just sayin'

See /327/c2/320637/2.html#post2426807 - this is *exactly* why people are angry. Perhaps even more so now that you've indicated that you aren't even studying SL, but are studying how to write a report. Remember, we're all real people here, not just names on your screen.

We understand. All too well.

Thanks Mar. You summed it up nicely, as usual.

Mari, if it were up to me, your quote on surveys would be in a sticky entitled "Want to post a survey? Read this first."

Heh, good idea. I'd do it. Imagine the professor's expression when he receives 20 emails from SL residents complaining about his stupid project.
