Last night I had three hot rocker chicks give me some cool skins.
As I was putting on one of the skins, my computer rebooted.
I tend to think its memory, I have only 512.
But should I be worried? Can people pass malware to you through skins or other gifts?

It sounds like it's heat. Somewhere in XP there's an option to automatically reboot the computer if the internal heat goes above a certain level... if you're new to SL and are doing something graphically demanding it might do just that.
I could be wrong, though.

I could be wrong, though. I don't think that's a part of Windows but hardware itself.. It may have been that. Sony notebooks, which I'm using and an antigue one at that are notorious for that. They have to be taken apart and the fan cleaned out where there will be a huge amount of line trapped. Design flaw or an attempt to get forced service out of us. Sony wants $300 just too look at a notebook, at least the last time I looked. One thing though, when its needed cleaning it just shuts of completely. Thanks for the try and that may be it.

Pep (This one will run and run! ) Group sex innuendo? I don't get that one. You must have a dirtier mind than I do and that's hard to pull off. The skins were skins, I don't know how to be more clear about them. I really didn't understand them very well. One of them buffed me up a lot. Shape skin? The others were all about body hair which as far as I could tell were about facial hair. I'm looking hot now thanks to the three hot rocker chicks. Come on guy, just staying in character, one of the fun things about the game is all the hot chicks. I started playing again because of been smoking these wonderful hand made cigars and smoking too many of them. I'm trying to quit them and have been just under 24 hours without one. So I'm really ready to just rip heads off and set them on fire. Don't be so quick to judge, I'm just a newbie. The name? Its funny. perhaps I should change it.

To the best of my knowledge, texture items (skins; system hair (little clown hair icon); eyes; and system clothing like texture shirts, undershirts, jackets, pants, underpants, skirts) cannot contain anything like SL scripts or RL malware that will hurt your avatar or your computer. A skin could potentially make your avatar look ugly, and cannot be removed but must be replaced by another skin, but that's about it.
Prim objects (anything that has a box icon next to it in your inventory) CAN contain scripts which CAN potentially mess with your avatar, though most of the effects can be reversed by removing the item and possibly relogging. (An example might be a deformer, which will stretch your avatar or contort it into a strange position. Take it off, relog, and you should be fine.)
If any unfamiliar item asks for debit permissions, which is a big yellow popup in your upper right corner of your screen, and you are not clear on why it might need to take money out of your account, decline and take the item back into inventory. If it's some random thing you picked up somewhere or someone gave you, delete it. There are some objects - such as split commission vendors - which will legitimately need these permissions, but there are also griefer objects that will drain your account if you allow them to do so.
In your case with the skins, I would suspect a computer issue, such as memory or heat, but I am not a computer expert at all.
ETA: I am not aware of any SL item which could harm your RL computer, like a virus contained in an inventory item which causes RL computer hacking/damage.

Items in SL cannot harm your computer. SL by itself won't harm your computer. But SL on a computer that is already showing signs of issues? It will kill it fast. It's very resource intensive. Especially on a laptop. Number 1 complaint about SL on laptops is how hot the laptop gets. If it's that old, I'd recommend getting new one. Edit: Items in SL will not harm your computer. I should clarify.

Yup, skins are safe. You say 512? Friend told me you need 2gb to do SL with any level of comfort, so I went out and bought some...

I had to double check on what I said earlier. I remember disabling this because I was running something extremely graphically intensive that would trigger it and restart the computer. Very, very annoying.
Right-click My Computer, go to the Advanced tab. Under 'Startup and Recovery', click Settings, and under 'System Failure', uncheck 'Automatically restart'.
Now when my video card gets extremely overworked, I get pretty colors on the screen and I take steps to shut down properly. I've since added two more fans to pull heat from my video card but I'd much rather burn out the card someday (and get a much-needed new one anyway) than have XP decide it's smarter than me and keep rebooting itself like that.
Just an idea. Laptops and heat might be a whole different story, of course.

Stiffy, don't worry about Pserendipity. He's like that with everybody.
The skin that "buffed you up"? That's because it has muscles airbrushed onto it. The skin and the shape work together to create your final "look".

512 memory is woefully low for running SL.
Probably it was too much for it, when you tried on several skins in a row, probably while it also had to process other things the game was doing - like pop ups about accepting the gifts, like the other avs dancing, etc., etc. Game graphics alone can stall a game.
On something way more powerful than you've mentioned - my game still freezes if I open something and get an IM or pop up at once. So, it's just a memory hog.
The direct answer is "not that I know of." You might wanna ask the same thing in the scripts forum, I dunno. Skins can't contain a script though.

It does okay but I tried to ride my new Indian motorbike and I ended up stuck in a water tower. The lag probably helped with that. I turned down the graphics, that helped a lot with performance. Yes I need to upgrade, that's obvious. At the moment, most of my PC's are 8000 miles away.

I mean the kind spammers like to install so that your computer send spam. Seems like a script could do that. But I don't know, maybe there is no send email command. If Zombies can be done, the spammers will show up sooner or later. Yeah the stuff they gave me is all cool, I'm looking great now.

I use a wireless keyboard cauuse I'm lazy so I don't usually know it until it shuts off. I think this was a memory issue. Being a Noob, I wasn't sure if this was a common problem, that is picking up bad things from other users.

Windows's Restart on error is looking for kernal software/driver/memory issues, not temperature. Your hardware is looking just for temperature. Turning of windows' one may not make a difference depending on what the problem is.
Most motherboards have sane limits, if you are triggering it you are damaging your computer no question.

Thanks for the try and that may be it. My oldest computer sometimes reboots itself and more so when the house is very warm inside during the summer. SL especially uses a lot of CPU and memory with all the fans going flat out to keep the system cool. Only since I got my new computer just over a week ago can SL be played really well with no lock ups or screaming fans!

I set graphics to be performance but too many things were hard t see. I make sure I have all the stuff in my system tray turned off. Installed free meter, keeping an eye on memory. Its doing okay but an upgrade is much needed. Last night it took about 10 minutes for my body to be created, I was just a cloud. I thought I HAd lost my body. LOL

Actually you can pass pixil DNA on to these chicks so if you have sex with these three tramps and they get knocked up you could be liable for child support in real coz they can trace your pixil DNA. And then you have to upgrade these kids every year until they can live in Zindra. A friend a'mine told me this in a text message so I know it's true!

Yeah the stuff they gave me is all cool, I'm looking great now. Scripts in SL run on Linden's servers, not on your client. They can't do anything like that to your machine. The can however send spam from within SL if you rez the object.

Last time I did that I couldn't believe what I got out of it. Its not the normal dust but a dust ball, looked like a cats fur ball but I don't have a cat. Yeah, heat is the enemy of all electronics. When I play I'm sitting at 100% cpu all the time. Its 2.6Mhz but the FSB is only 100 so there's bound to be a bottle neck causing the CPU to have a backlog of instructions it needs to process. At least that makes sense to me.
