From: Melita Magic But Facebook doesn't require any proof of identity as I recall. No, true enough. Still, this was a VERY impressive set up, creating an entirely fictional identity and history, complete with plenty of "documentary" evidence of his supposed existence. I just meant that it's not at all difficult to fool the internetz.

How did you reiceve the message from them? Was it by IM in world (SL) or did they have your email addy?
Cause if they sent it by IM to a group or friends wouldnt they have access to SL to do that?

I just meant that it's not at all difficult to fool the internetz. I sooo agree. I've heard some pretty shocking scams pulled on social networking sites/forums - and for no other reason usually other than the perpetrator was apparently either a pathological liar or sociopath getting their funsies that way. Most of the time money/gifts did not result but sometimes fake illness or fake death of a (sometimes fake) loved one resulted in lots of those. Pretty shocking, I think. But internet is catnip for such types. It isn't hard at ALL to pull someone else's pix and name and slap something together, or even borrow someone's life story, I wish everyone kept that in mind online. :/

People on Facebook or MySpace assume that the online identities with which they are interacting are "real" because they are "supposed" to be so. Whereas, of course, anonymity is a keystone of SL. The avatar lieth not, because she nothing affirmeth.
