How is dating in SL any different than dating online via an online dating site or IMing someone? Besides for having an avatar to look at than an e-mail screen or IM window, before seeing them live via a cam, you still fall in love with the person's mind and in some cases the way their av looks (which I see would be the only difference).

I met my RL lover on SL in 2007. I've dated online in several instances through Yahoo Messenger and some dating sites... I found the only difference being the virtual avatars you see instead of the IM window.

Other than that, the same mental attitude should apply no matter what. Do you really know who is behind that IM window... or who is behind that avatar kissing you on SL?

I wouldn't mind sharing my full story Randoym, but would need to get my partners okay first.

Heya

When we met (Match and I), I was actually quite shy to go from text to private voice calls because I had such a crush on him (although I had heard him only a few times on public chat). When we did speak, we quickly moved to Skype audio calls (often with SL in the background off and on) where we realized we could hold conversations without AVs involved. Then he had the guts to get his camera turned on, which he used for me for a week or two before I went out and bought one.

I'm not shy in RL but man was I super shy with him! My reaction to him surprised me. It felt like I was in 6th grade again...and although I was pretty jaded with most guys it seemed not with Match.

And YEAH!!! His AV was pretty damn hot (he had a lot of HUDs on it which made him sorta...let's say...tricky and fun to watch).

IMO, most dating sites (and I think I've tried them all over the years) are too self-reported, in other words, too much about a marketing version of yourself. What people make decisions about are pics and preferences, rarely more (although the personality tests are a newer feature that might have merit...not sure).

I liked Matchsticks just as a person on SL, even before I had seen his RL pic or knew much more about him than he lived in the AU. If I had read his profile on a dating site (umm...like I'd ever have FOUND him this far away), he'd have probably been "too young", "too far away", "not enough in common", etc.

What we do have in common, however, are very personal things that we discovered because we were sitting there together for hours and hours every day just talking. Life experiences, not bullshit like, "Oh yeah! I love Snoop Dog too!!" or "OMG! You like ham and pineapple pizza!!!" :D It was more about our family histories, things that had meaning that would never have been listed on a personal ad, and therefore, I probably would have missed.

In SL you'll be lucky to find out somebodies first name within the first three years. Then by the time you've found out their species and gender you'll be bored stupid anyway.

On normal dating sites women will happily display their gyneacology reports in their profile.

There's no comparison.

Wow 2k, you must be doing something wrong. Not bragging, but I recently had a very enjoyable rl date with someone I met just a week before in sl. And that isn't my only experience of crossing over by any means.

Dang. I was hoping for a different answer. ;)

It's a purely non-profit venture, I'm afraid. And that's coming from someone who also has been published for cash previously. :o No money comes to or from the site, even for me (and in fact, especially for me, and I could really use it because I can't work right now).

If you change your mind...my addy is all over this thread. :p

This might be, literally, the best use of irony I've ever seen.

I suspect I must be one of those intellectually challenged folk that Pep abhors so much, because I have no clue what the past few entries on this thread mean.

Except perhaps as an expression of self congratulation for apparently knowing what the word "irony" means. :)

Duh, isn't it "like iron"?

Pap (In the same way that "steely" means "like steel";)
