Duck tape is a brand of duct tape now..I guess over time things change.. but ya that's the original name for it..It's known in the construction trades as duct tape.. probably because Duck registered the name.. both the metal tape and duct tape are used on ducts..mostly by home owners though.. unless your ducts is being insulated..thats about the only time a company would put it on ducts.. when the metal tape or duct tape is used on ductwork itself it's going to fall off over time because of air pressure and dust. if it is a tiny leak of air inside the house it's nothing to worry about because it's still in the house..if it's in the attic or crawl space is when you should worry about duct leaks and thats only for efficiency more than anything..

From: Argent Stonecutter But duck tape is the real name. It was invented in WWII for sealing packages and was called that by the soldiers because it shed water like a duck. Close and that is the popular story, but it was first made by Johnson & Johnson with the full name of vinyl backed cotton duck tape. "Duck" was the type of fabric used.

One can also postulate that the "Duck" descriptive came from when the quacks at The Department of Homeland Security (DOHS), suggested we stock up on it along with plastic sheeting a few years back.

Of course, we can't ALL be Chris Norse, can we? Many aspire to be, but I am an original.

From: Brenda Connolly I wish it were true I've had the "OMG it's you" happen to me too. It's kind of hard not to with this horrific post count. Unfortunately, being recognized for one's forum posts is not always a good thing... It wasn't my knife! That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

From: Brenda Connolly It's also known as Gaffer's Tape, in the entertainment industry.
From Wiki: I believe that Gaffer's tape is different -- it doesn't leave a residue when removed.

From: Scylla Rhiadra Not ALL of us would have this particular problem, Smith. Although I can imagine that fluid intake would be pretty important for anyone undergoing this particular physiological phenomenon.
A tentative thesis in response, however: Orgasms are overrated anyway. It's the GETTING there that is fun. Perhaps, but not so much if you don't actually get there. Of course, the most overrated thing in the world is a good f*ck, and the most underrated is a good sh*t. Still, I enjoy the former more!

Dunno about Gaffer's tape, but drafting tape doesn't either. But you can't hold together the world with drafting tape... or even tape the paper to the board, either. Hated drafting tape.
Duct-tape is much more useful.

From: Eli Schlegal Trying to correct Brenda about tape is like trying to give golf tips to Tiger Woods. Just sayin... Lol! In my defense, from http://www.octanecreative.com/ducttape/duckvsduct.html : From: someone Gaff Tape (also Gaffer’s Tape): This special grade of duct tape (often colored black) was developed by the entertainment industry to hold lighting equipment and cables in place and has a dull finish so that it won’t reflect lights. Gaff Tape also has a specially formulated, less tacky adhesive that won’t leave a residue when it is removed. So, Brenda was not wrong, nor was I.

All I gotta add is that Duck/Duct Tape is like the Force.
It has a light side, and a dark side, and it binds the universe together.

Gaffer's tape is amazing.
The king of all tapes, really.
It doesn't have that horrible sticky residue, and it doesn't get all slidey in the heat either.
And it's more like... it's more cloth~y than plastic~y somehow. But it's close to duck tape.
Real close. A definite cousin somehow.
I had half a roll of the stuff once, and it was a highlight of my life. From what I hear, it's insanely expensive though, and I have no idea where to get more of it.
Probably for the best anyway.
If we all fixed stuff with gaffer's tape, nobody would replace broken things. And then the economy really would collapse, leaving us back in the stone age. But with gaffer's tape.
Hey, maybe it wouldn't be so bad after all...

Gaffer's tape http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gaffer_tapeA fine product from the entertainment industry. Comes in many colors. You'll never go back to duct tape again. I always keep a role of black in the garage. A good place to purchase from: http://www.uline.com/BL_3110/?pricode=wf725Just about any supply store for theatre or film will stock it, most cities have at least one place.
