i'd like to hear some more about what can be done about my problem with her product - i've sent photo's and notecards and friended her.

Maybe it's something we can help you with here on the forum. What's the problem you're having exactly?

I sure love it when customers send friend invitations just so they can keep track of me at every given moment...

[Edit: This is not to say that you don't have a valid complaint. I'm just sayin... ;) ]

I'm not a merchant, trader, store owner, businessman, whatever in SL, but in the past, I've been away for say, a fortnight, and returned to find my IMs capped. I can therefore see why anyone running a business is likely to fall foul of this, especially at times when stale transactions are taking over the world and customer to seller communication is at peak volume.
It still goes to email even if you're capped in-world which is why it's not really much of a valid excuse.

(Edited to add that I do understand it's more of an effort to go through an email, look someone up in search and IM them back, or that the sheer volume of emails makes it difficult, but that still doesn't make it right to hide behind "I capped";)

I don't imagine I would respond too helpfully, if at all, to someone asking me for support with a product they hadn't paid for!
If someone likes the skin but has reason to doubt that it's authentic then why not respond? They may not be your customer but clearly they do care if your work happened to be ripped off which is a good thing in itself.

They may also buy the skin from your store if it turns out to be a unauthorized copy, in which case you do gain a sale.

There are many reasons why someone might not have IM to email enabled. Many vendors and other scripted items send out IM alerts, and even the vast majority of IMs from people are just "hi," or "are you online?" Between my freebie vendors and people who don't cut to the chase, maybe one in 200-300 emails from SL are from a customer in need of support. I keep them enabled, but it's very easy to miss one amidst all the vendor emails and IMs that don't warrant a response.

I call these "pings" and yeah, I don't like being pinged. It's not a big deal, but such aggressiveness is mildly obnoxious.

With skins there are often requests that the skin maker just isn't going to be inclined to do.

Many skin makers aren't going to do custom work. Especially the busy ones.

They aren't going to release their textures, no matter for what reason.

They aren't going to give you skins you didn't buy just because you own one that you did.

They aren't going to support stolen merchandise.

As I understand it those are the most common requests anyhow ... So if the requests were along those lines, not getting a response wouldn't be entirely unexplainable.

Yes, I don't know too many skinners that aren't busy

Those statements all ring true for me.

Most skinners DO want to know who, what, where, and when regarding stolen skins. We network with other skinners and with our customers. THAT would be be a very legitamate reason for contacting a skin designer, and for finding out WHO made that unknown skin you like so much.

Best practices:

1. Send the skin artist an introductory IM, Note, direct E-mail, or whatever they prefer as a means of contact. Get straight to the point. Don't write a novella.

2. Include a close up snapshot of the skin in question in a follow up message. Preferably a close up of the face as this will have the most unique features on it.

I've lost count of the number of times I've received snapshots of possibly stolen skins on fully clothed avatars off in the distance in tiny 512x512 files. Those images are not much help. Save out to your hard drive.
