From: SuezanneC Baskerville The question seems to be about a third party voting system, not about LL's traffic system. actual it was framed in reference to traffic... point being if the people that vote don't stick around, it doesn't do much for traffic numbers, but can still inflate voting

(Last thing I heard, traffic points are proportional to the amount of time an avatar spends on a parcel. Not the convoluted process claimed to have been in effect long ago. Kitty Barnett knows.)

Oh great anyone else care about fake votes? Eventually those who follow any of this they will show up in the club realize its either dead, full of zombies and lag and get bored and go else where regardless of the hype.

ok tim..let me rephrase my point. I have been working in marketing in SL for quite awhile. I have never heard of this system. I dont know of anyone who uses it, i dont know of any residents who look at it, it isnt widely publicized etc. So its impact on increasing traffic i am pretty sure is much lower than the more visible and well known ways and methods that are out there.
I believe that traffic in any form is irrelevent to sales or success since the traffic counts do not = succes. I will add this system to that category of things that i dont believe have much of an impact on making people arrive at a site. If the system itself is not well known, then how effective can its influence be on any sl residents?

I just stopped in, the entire sim was empty except for me. Maybe they saw me arriving. There was more than one voting box there right near each other.
Hmm, let's see, how could such a system be gamed?
Well, if I owned a bunch of clubs under various accounts, I could make a web page and post fake vote totals that were made up out of the clear blue sky.
I could start a voting system that was supposed to be legit, then a club owner could offer me a large sum of money to post fake vote totals and I could agree.
There could be a flaw in the voting script that allows multiple votes when it's not supposed to.
One could pay users to pop in there and vote, and they could leave so fast they don't show up in the traffic count at all.
One could generate lots of SL accounts and use them to vote.

about a month ago yure and i went to see some advertising place someone we had just met wanted to show us. they were having a sploder event.. which they seemed to do quite regularly .. there were 2 voting boxes, exactly the same in appearance.. the owner was quite proud and told us to click on each one and vote and try to vote twice on both of the boxes.. well the one box allowed one vote and on the second click said in chat 'You have already voted' .. the other one however.. you could vote and vote anc vote.. he told us it was a 'special' box... top secret.
i would think that place possibly has one of those.

Hmmmm.... I can't remember what it was called, but I remember there was for a while a service in SL where you could wear this HUD and rate people and places with it, and the ratings would show up on this web site run by the HUD maker. The first day I tested it out I discovered that the web site back-end was completely insecure, and I managed to bypass their built-in "security" and manually register my alts at their site without even being logged into SL- even though it was supposedly an in-world-only (and therefore secure) process. I could have used the same process to register accounts for any Second Life resident, and I would have been sole owner of the accounts. It is possible someone figured out the URL to their voting database and knows what to do to fool the voting system. It is also possible, like SueC suggested, that the web site itself takes payola. Another thing I thought about for just a moment was maybe they were paying people for votes, but even at 10L/vote, over 3000 votes would be rather expensive and time-consuming for gaining that many overnight. By this time it should be clear that there are many possible avenues for exploit.

I wouldn't get tooo twisted about this...slpopularplaces doesn't count for anything inworld except their own website, which is flawed, as I discovered when I was running my club.

I am currentlly in edit on their "Sploder" and low & behold.. look what I see.. The script from the "Green Vote Box" inside... by the same creator as all other green voteboxes associated with http://slpopularplaces.com/secondlife.php . Is this a co-incident? (Insert explitive here) no. Some of you say I shouldn't care.. Ok great, you are all entitled to your opinion.. Just like everyone as an anus... I get that... Just don't get up in my business if you have nothing else better to do then get all self righteous and jump all over someone when they ask a simple question.. I get that not all of you are in the club industry.. Awesome.. fantastic.. then shut your cake holes... cause you don't have a clue what it takes to get and keep your name out there (returns the soap box to it's spot and sits down)

What we said was that you maybe shouldn't stress about this vote box thingy (with which none of us are familiar) because there are many such systems in existence in SL. You yourself have admitted in your last post that the system that YOU USE is flawed; why not just say "Hey, yeah, learning curve, let's move on" and be done with it? Why insult the very people you come to consult?

If places reported continue to use the scam and are still listed, then you have something with which you can discredit the system. On the other hand you might find that the admins actually care about their reputability.
