Every time we turn around fellow residents, it seems that someone has found a glitch or a loop hole to game something. I MEAN WTF!!!!! This time it looks to be the vote box. Now I am not accusing anyone of anything illegal, however here is the Votebox ranking at 6:42am from http://www.slpopularplaces.com/secondlife.php

TOP CLUB EQUILIBRIUM 3100
Bad Girls - Dance & Feti 3024
DANCE ISLAND 2776
Bad Girls - Dance & Feti 2052
Job Island - Jobs - L$ 1790
Club Equilibrium WE ARE 1683
MERCURY SAPPHIRE MALL 1534
UltraViolet MooN Club 1528
Club Equilibrium WE ARE 1499
*Beautiful Sin* 1498

*****14 HOURS AGO THEY WERE 85 VOTES BEHIND THE LEADER*******
TOP CLUB EQUILIBRIUM only has traffic of 5700 on their parcel.. so.. ummm unless my math is wrong.. How is this possible? Can anyone help me out on this one?

I also had a chat with someone who was building there.. Name as been deleted to protect everyone

[6:23] You: Just the man I was looking for
[6:23] You: :)
[6:23] You: How are you (name deleted)?
[6:23] (name deleted): thx fine and you?
[6:23] You: Awesome...
[6:23] (name deleted): hehe
[6:24] You: Boy you guys sure made it up the voting list fast.... what's your secret?
[6:25] (name deleted): hehe we have enough fans ...this club is only new and smaller rebuild from old big club equilibrium:-)
[6:26] You: I can understand that.. I was just curious as to how you can with a parcel traffic of 5700+
[6:26] (name deleted): 3100 votings so far:-)
[6:26] You: that is all
[6:26] (name deleted): was not alot online the last 2 days thats why traffic is so less
[6:26] (name deleted): come back in 2 days:-))
[6:27] You: well It only took you guys 2 days to over take Bad Girls and Dance Island... so like I said.. was curious... anyways.. have a nice day... dont want to keep you from your build..

Have you tried asking in the SLPopularPlaces forum? http://www.slpopularplaces.com/forum/

I'd never heard of SL Popular Places. How does it work?

The Green vote boxes you see at clubs and other popular destinations.... that routes to the URL I provided. :)

The old authentic Linden vote box system has long been obsolete.

Must be their own voting box system.

This system was created by Guido Columbia. Hard to tell who is the admin of the site.. but it is in operation...

Used to think that you could not get a bot to game this.. Now.. I am not so sure...

(Shh. I'm trying to spread the rumor that the old Linden vote boxes stop CopyBots and repel spampires. They're as effective as anything else, right? )

I don't think an one cares about this really - pretty much ask anyone and they have either not heard of it or don't bother to vote- so I wouldn't lose much sleep.

There is at least one traffic inflation service that will flood your parcel with bots to drive up your traffic. I reckon the bots could click your vote boxes too. Also... do the vote boxes track who is voting? Maybe you can just re-click the box a hundred times yourself?

But seriously, I can almost guarantee you that the only people looking at this "SL popular places" web site are people who own vote boxes. It's a virtually meaningless ranking.

It does track it because 1 avitar is allowed to register 1 vote per day.. registered by UUID.. (i have ISP issues and have dropped connection 3-4 times in 2 hours 1 night.. and seen if it was affected by changes in IP address... nope :)

so either these people have 200-300 accounts or bots.. I have no other ideas on how it's getting done...

Not trying to Sling mud at you ... however, I cannot help to see your forum tag (is that what they are called??) as Marketing Consultant... We view this voting system as a "Marketing Tool".. so umm sorry, but not gonna look away as "they run the numbers up" as you have put it.

Tim, I don't think anyone's trying to sling mud here. I've never even heard of this system, and lots of people here have said the same. We're all pretty jaded when it comes to "popular" places. There are many many ways to game the system, and they've all shown up here in the Forums at one time or another. The system you're using will probably disappear within 6 months when something else comes along. I'd not worry about it, and make your own place better without the popularity contest.

I find the rankings system in the official search meaningless, and any rankings system beyond that carries even less weight for me. Most of them appear to be nothing more than a big competition among the participants to see who can game it more efficiently.

Pick up a magazine for some recreational topic; quilting, paintball, games, whatever. Notice the relationship betwen the reviews and the full page ad? Yeah. Welcome to the real world.

Hmmm seems to be a lot of apathy in this thread towards someone who is asking for suggestions. Where is the usual spirit of help here? Does it matter that the system is not necessarily relevant to everyone?

To the OP: I would think it will be bots personally. Anything that is possible from the viewer by a real person in control can also be performed by a bot. Touching objects? No problem at all, some of the general purpose bot clients advertise this feature. Searching for an object of a particular name and then performing an action on it? Also an advertised feature on some of those general purpose bot clients.

It is almost impossible to think of a way to stop this kind of system abuse too. Whatever hoops you force the person through to verify will only deter people from voting and is unlikely to stop vote riggers for long. They will just alter their bot program and you are back where you started from.

Sorry the news is not good at all :(

might also help to remember traffic isn't based just on who wanders by, it also counts how long they were there, and where the spent the most time.

it could be that they actually do have that many legit ppl clicking it, but not sticking around for long

when I first saw these things (not the linden ones but a resident created system, probably this very one) I would click the box, even if I did not stick around, figured what the heck why not help them out, no skin off my nose

never checked the website, did not care about the ranking nor checking to see who was "popular"

As for it being a marketing tool, sure it is, but to what % of the resident base? my guess is a pretty small % :)

I would not worry about it, just enjoy your SL and move along to the next place that catches your eye

The question seems to be about a third party voting system, not about LL's traffic system.

There is precious little information on the slpopularplaces's minimal site, and only 53 or so posts in their site's forum.

So far as publicizing one's business, group, etc. I suspect time would be better spent making a nice, attractive signature for the forums here and at sluniverse and posting some helpful responses to people's questions, or many other ways, instead of worrying about the validity of slpopularplaces.com's voting system.

Is there a way to find out how many hits a web site that's not yours, such as for instance, slpopularplaces.com, gets?

TSYM... I was beginning to wonder if people had nothing else better to do then to come in here and be self-righteous when one has an important question about certain things that make you question the validity of process.

Like come on people.. I am not urinating in your cornflakes.. I was just asking for a little assistance on what is actually happening....

Does anyone really look at SLpopularplaces.com anyway?

Unless you're on the first page (which seems hard to do without gaming the system or having huge traffic), it seems a rather meaningless tabulation.

I refuse to put those vote boxes in my club.

I had one of those boxes in my club about a year ago. Every day me, my partner, all my friends and all our alts would click the box.

People would just pop in and click the box and leave before they had time to even register for traffic.

My click count on the web site was always higher than my traffic would indicate. You can't base your evaluation of the validity of the count based on the traffic score because of the way traffic is figured in the first place.

But I finally got rid of the thing and even deleted it from my inventory because, as a marketing tool, it turned out to be about as useful as a snowball in Hades.

I got more traffic generated from my classifieds and people with our place in their picks than slpopularplaces.com ever brought us.

Not worth getting all worried about it, IMHO
