When Do "Rules" become "Regulations"?

Are the forums going to be more actively "edted"?
Are the sims going to be more actively "policed"
Is the forum and is the sl world under "CCTV scrutiny" in the sense that infringement citations of the rules (in even a minor way) are rapidly increasing?

I like sl. It's fun. But if more and more regulations appear and if even a forum must stay "on topic" then I am not so sure my measly $40 bucks a month is a bargain for me. After all, I am an adult. I know this is a private "space" but aren't we in danger of being overly-cautious?

I fear that forums are really going to be accountability-managed by the Lab. The last time I was told that I had to apply myself to the subject at hand and not veer away from the question asked was two days before I left / ran away from boarding school - and I haven't gone back since.

Is it a crime to mention reality or make a non-specific comment on a website that boasts a commitment to education, technologies, corporate finances and the arts IN THE REAL world? We are a population who come from realities of our own and sl merely enhances and increases our enjoyment of "being" in either world.

Rules are what we are aware of before we "sign up". Regulations demand obedience and imply severe consequences. It's a delicate balancing act. Is it even "safe" to ask such a question? Are we toppling over?

Rules are rarely demanded by the peoples they apply to.

What is this? A Hippy Convention? Get on with the question at hand. You're beginning to sound like my biological dad. You'll be quoting Ghandi next.

Jig goes off muttering darkly to herself "Bunch a' halloweeners". :)

I think what will happen is that LL will try to create a rule-following forum and that those of us who prefer a more social environment will find a home elsewhere.

Hmmm

From the dictionary:

regulation
b: a rule or order issued by an executive authority or regulatory agency of a government and having the force of law

(rule is part of this definition)

rule
e: a regulation or bylaw governing procedure or controlling conduct

(regulation is part of this definition)

So, according to the dictionary, they are pretty much the same.

There's a topic?? Oh oh there is.. okay, ummm....

Well I think the forum 'rules' are kind of the first 'broadly offensive' type of control LL exerts. There's a perceived issue, in this case that the forums have become out of control free fire zones or something. None of the Lindens want to actually get away from the pastry cart and their back massages they get 8 hours a day to do something about it, so the low man on the totem pole (by the way, who is the newest Linden?) 'volunteers' to write up some rules an spread them about for all the residents to read and promptly obey without question... since this has worked so well in the past for them. About a year from now, they will realize that no one is paying any attention to them and they will split the forums, there will be the PG forums where every post is immediately reported for being offensive by the netnany's who get super offended when anyone shows any enjoyment in life. And there will be the adult forums where lindens will not tread for fear of stepping on something icky and tracking it around the ultra plush carpeting the surrounds their jacuzzi/desk. LL will then publish a document suggesting how everyone beg their boss to look at the SL forums (not the contained ones mind you) to see how corporately sensitive they are. Which no one will do because we will all being in Zindra-forums having over the top flamewars about gigantic prim-penis' attached to 3 inch tall avatars.

Given the new "forum" software they're moving us to, who cares?

Jig, you've outdone yourself! Good questions. Gotta agree with Seven that people will be hustlin' out of here if it is no longer fun. (Same goes for SL... but according to the new rules, I am careful not to suggest anyone leave SL !! ;P)

From what I can interpret from the new rules, I can't refer to my naughty bits (hey, there goes 80% of my posts!), poke fun at people who can't use logic (another 5% of my posts!) or both (another 3%!), not to mention that I probably can't put my website in my signature (since it would not be specifically personal and non-commercial in nature).

Two thumbs down!

Where's your balls? Naughty bits are genitals. :)
Genitalia - can you imagine a kid called that in ancient Rome?

"Genitalia, dear .."
"Yes, mater"
"Tell your brother, Fellatio, to stop playing in the penetralium"
"Yes mater."

Hmmm...

From: someone
In the Commerce forums titled “List your products,” “Services for Second Life,” “Help wanted,” and “Work wanted,” you may advertise or promote your own products and services for Second Life, your stores within Second Life, and your Xstreet SL marketplace listings, provided that you do not advertise or promote any sale, purchase, or trade outside a Linden Lab property (such as Second Life or the Xstreet SL marketplace), and you do not link to websites that include offers to trade, sell, or purchase outside a Linden Lab property.

So I guess that's how they'll keep people from linking to the s-l-a-p-t-dot-m-e wiki.

I think there is a subtle difference when commentators refer to them

Cricket has rules.
Ice Hockey has regulations

OR,
"Rules" are for the intelligentsia: "Regulations" are for the "end of the pier" crowd.

"Is Aunt Labia coming for crumpets, Mater?"
"Oh, Genny, yes. And she's bringing that awful Irish man Cunnilingus."
"Oh I like him!"
"Now dont get clitoral with me, Genny! Just set the table and dont forget to tell that slave Anus to knock up a cake for the party."

Smith, your sig has just gone wild!

I guess you have to pull out all the stops before the end.

It feels like the last days of Pompeii.

There's another thread about the change to the XStreetSL forums, and this article was posted about it:

http://digitaldeity.wordpress.com/2009/09/09/xstreetsl-has-lost-its-soul/

It's worth a read, and probably is what will happen to this forum.

Not "new" new, but this is what ppl are talking about:

https://blogs.secondlife.com/community/features/blog/2009/02/25/second-life-discussion-guidelines

it came up in another thread, today, kind of a women's thread, so you might have missed it. ;)

Well then. Epic day for Cristiano, I'd imagine ~ he's about to take over the function of SL official forums.

As for our ah... bright future here... I have no words.

Not sure it's gonna happen here. The blog says the rules are effective as of today, but I don't see any editing/closing/locking/banning going on.

I think rules and regulations are to be followed.

And I think following is for sheep. I do follow people who happen to be going the direction I want to go though.

I don't think I'll ever be moving across the street. I'd prefer a (relatively) mature friendly crowd. I know several forum folks have started their own forum pages as a kind of back up plan. And there a lot of blogs surfacing that would serve the same purpose for social interaction more in depth than can be had in world. Heck - if worst came to worst, I'd start one.
