I just logged back in (7pm GMT) and the MOTD has changed to the 'Want to find cool places? Check out Showcase' one. Earlier, when I logged briefly at 5pm GMT, the one this thread is about was still up. Since it's now just after 11am PDT I would guess that's consistent with it being changed at 9am, presumably when Battery Street is waking up to coffee and doughnuts

Overland Estate Agency spent over 400k for a classified advert last week......wonder how they feel about the Azures paying nothing the following week and attracting a wider audience through the MOTD.? The legal theory could be that the Overland Estate Agency were fraudulently induced to spend the 400k on their advertisement. It would fit if Linden Lab solicited the classified money without disclosing the giving of the MotD to a direct competitor, and Overland Estate Agency would not have bought the advertising at that price had they known about the competitor getting the free MotD. Were I in that position, that would be enough money at stake for me to demand a refund, and follow it up with legal action if ignored. I hope that those who Linden Lab screwed for big money all consult their lawyers. |

I think LL would be better served to use the MOTD for important far reaching announcements or strictly SL or LL sponsored events....i mean cant we even have a notice on there about camping and bots before we get ads?? I suppose if these folks are paying out the wazooo for these ads then more power to them, but if they are getting them by virtue of owning a ton of land....hmmmm...just seems wrong to me.

Why would Linden Lab want to advertise a policy that it has no intention of enforcing? |

If you really want this topic to get some attention, hold the discussion using Twitter, and put #iranelection in every tweet.
I might as well quote my facebook post: What other parts of the SL service could be used for paid ads? Possibly the Linden staff's forum signatures could be used. That would allow for both text and images. Perhaps my old idea of selling advertising space on the sky and terrain textures will come to pass. ... Read More The inventory system could have ads interspersed every item or two. Knowledge Base articles could have ads in them. "The answer to your technical problem will appear shortly, but first, a word from our sponsor." Torley's help videos could start with paid ads. Oh I know a good place to put ads, right on your own avatar! Display ads on the female avatar breasts, that would probably be the best place for guaranteed views. The monetization opportunities abound. I can't get a bit of support for my idea of interspersing ad text with chat text on an alternating character basis. That way you'd HAVE to look at the ads. Subliminal ads might be possible, (perhaps just shifting the color of pixels in the pattern of the sponsor's name by one bit) and of course there's product placement, like in the movies. There's empty space in the empty sidebar area of this forum, and for that matter, a tiny advertisement gif file would fit quite nicely in between the Post Icons right below where I'm typing right now. -- . _____________________

Did anyone catch the MOTD? Visit the adult continent zindra or whatever they call it. I just think thats a hoot Oh, sure...apparently the place was full of Lindens, and child avatars (that Marianne is very mature for her age. She takes things in stride that give some soi-disant "adults" nervous breakdowns). What's REALLY a hoot is the motto they chose for the place: "Zindra: Green Living for The Future". Talk about your politically correct non sequitur bullshit. What, is the place going to be powered by testosterone or something? I couldn't go...my sweeties and I were too busy creating Adult Content in our Private Residence. So there. _____________________

Someone earlier linked a JIRA issue proposing separating commercial MOTDs into a separate channel. That's not quite the answer I was looking for, so I've created an alternate proposal at http://jira.secondlife.com/browse/VWR-14438, to just stop using the MOTD for advertising.
The channels suggestion is a nice idea, but it still leaves people getting land ad spam by default, and (in my opinion) is not likely to be implemented given that it would require attention from already-overworked LL programmers. The really big problem to me is the reduction in the signal to noise ratio in the MOTD. 3rd party viewers will add MOTD-disabling options if LL keeps sticking ads there, and LL will lose that channel of communication as a means of getting important information to those users. The response from LL so far has indicated that the program is just in a trial stage and will be expanded if it's successful. Vote on the JIRA and let them know that it's not. |

That's true and is what I think. However, nothing seems to work very well for important messages, so perhaps there should just be a blinking exclamation point onscreen (not just at login) when there's news, meaning "Check status" or something. _____________________
