Apparently the MOTD threads at Xstreet have been removed, and the main one here has been locked, but I won't accept censorship, if that's what it is - hence this continuation thread if anyone wants to continue the discussion.

I think it's a brilliant idea. I won't accept such censorship, if that's what it is. Whether other people want to continue the discussion or not, is entirely up to them.

I don't believe there should be any form of advertising on the Login page.....what's the point of paying 400k for a classified? That gets you in top-8 and on front page of Search UI....isn't that enough?

Phil, we have butted heads in the past, but I stand with you on this.

Why not, Angel? The previous thread was closed for interpersonal wrangling, not for topic. I would hope the parties in the previous wrangling are interested enough in the topic to stay out of hot water, this time.

I never actually posted an opinion in the original thread, but I do think that LL should stay the hell out of in-world business - no ads on the login page - especially since the space for them is limited to just one. But it's what I expect from LL after they got into business with Xstreet commissions and plug it as much as they can. It's just another reason why I have no respect for LL as a company.

Overland Estate Agency spent over 400k for a classified advert last week......wonder how they feel about the Azures paying nothing the following week and attracting a wider audience through the MOTD.?

Is it known that the MOTD ad cost nothing?

Amazing how an issue can force a group hug among the most unlikely. :)

I'm cool with it if:

1) It is across the board....all businesses included....all sizes.

2) Every business that is promoted has the seal of approval on good business dealings by the entire community.

Both are Impossible.

That's right at the heart of my last post on one of the XstreetSL threads just before it was disappeared.

Linden Lab sells games--not Second Life, but rather games pitting resident businesses against each other in competition for advertising attention.

SL land is a nearly perfect zero-sum game. Introducing a new advertising channel for land does not increase demand for land, but it surely increases demand for advertising, which in contrast is far from a zero-sum game. Advertisers will inflate their budgets to compete for space in that new channel, even while it erodes the value of their investment in other channels (e.g., classifieds).

LL is introducing a new game that you can't win if you don't play. And eventually you can bet that you'll pay handsomely to play.

Yes, cost nothing....LL did not announce it, they are testing this form of advertising on MOTD under the guise of working with Estate owners and promoting them ....rofl

The kind of help to Land owners,.... that flooded mainland with 1000's new sims and brought down the sqm pricing, the kind of help that made existing Estate SIM owners see 40% of their re-sale value disappear overnight (SIM cost reduced from 1625 to 1000 USD), the kind of help that created a new popular product.....sold 15000 of them, then decided to hike the Tier price by 60%+ and place avatar limits and soon to be scripting limits too.

Oh the irony! :D

I'm really glad that I sold off all my land. Lately I've had the "SL blahs" - a term for being at the point of logging into SL, then hovering my finger just above the enter key and thinking, "What do I actually want to do when I enter SL?" and when nothing comes to me, I just X out and go back to RL. As someone said to me recently "the shiny is wearing off."

I've been here before and some quality time outside, accomplishing RL goals, mingling with RL friends - going to play with my parents' Bichon (he is sooo cute!!)....will usually bring me back refreshed to SL.

What does that have to do with the OP? Not much except the land/business part. Just the mood I've been in lately. :(

Jira to allow residents to ignore ads - VWR-14039
06-15-2009 09:47
Reposting because it was not involved in the lock cause, and folks might be interested:

"Create subscription channels for MOTD so residents can avoid ads and still get service announcements"

https://jira.secondlife.com/browse/VWR-14039

I am not in total disagreement with LL, perhaps seeing ads might be nice for newbies. But a huge portion of established residents use SL for escape, and REALLY don't want to see them. Perhaps this way of handling it will allow LL to still sell the ads on the basis that all newer residents, and most unsophisticated residents, will still see them.

If anyone wants simple instructions on how to vote in Jira, post here and I'll drop them in.

You know, I wasn't sure what this was about till I logged in a little while ago and paid attention to the MOTD. Most times I switch to a browser or e-mail when I start the client and it chugs through the login. So I very rarely see the MOTD and whatever adverts are placed there won't get noticed.

In my 15+ years on the internet I have read very little that would qualify as brilliant. I assure you that re-opening a thread on a game forum does not qualify.

I think it would be a very long stretch to say that the threads were closed because of "interpersonal wrangling". We have all seen much worse flames in a multitude of threads that were never touched.

/me thinks resmods probably pay more attention to threads that are hot or to ones that have been complained about..

Having a thread go seriously off-topic/get nasty and not be closed just means that nobody's complained about it or that the mods didn't notice it.

I had a very negative experience with the MOTD.

Before the Azure Islands one came up, there was this persistent blurb for some sort of festival at Nautilus. It mentioned a boat show, and I love boats, so I finally clicked on the link.

When I showed up, the first thing I saw was a very ugly male avatar, naked, with a prominently erect primness (which did not Match). I didn't see any boats, or any other evidence of festivities, but the lag was so terrible I couldn't move.

I IM'd the naked person and requested he don some clothes and put his equipment away. I got a big song and dance about how he was born naked, what was so terrible, it was too hot for clothes, and besides he didn't have any, yadda yadda yadda.

So I AR'd the bugger and tp'd home.

What the heck? I go to a *LINDEN SPONSORED AND APPROVED* event, and what happens? Inappropriate Adult Content, that's what. Way to go, LL. And guess what? The new Adult Content restrictions won't do a thing to change that.

I'm having a hard time caring about this MOTD stuff. Just one more thing that LL spent time on instead of doing something that will make my SL better. Business as usual..

Peppy, I have never been in favor of public indecency. What I'm against is the utterly imbecilic way that LL is proposing to control it.

And I *am* a libertarian. That fellow chose to be nude. Fine...I chose to AR him for violating the Community Standards.

Freedom in action.
