I'm brand new to this game. I just logged in for the first time about 10 minutes ago. While I as trying to make sense of the UI two players approached and started to verbally insult and call me names I won't repeat here. Is this the norm for this game? I was curious about this game from reviews I had read and thought I'd give it a shot. However if this is a common occurance I won't be back.

Yes, my best advice is to teleport out of there as soon as you login to the game. LL are (were) in the process of trying to improve this but it appears they were lazy or didn't get it finish

Unfortunately you will find most Americans (sorry i'm not generalizing, it's fact - there are nice ones about but few and far between) think they own the entire grid and can/are very rude to anyone new or who isn't also very rude.

What you want to try and get ahold of is a follower cage to cage these mofo's and send them into space (that will crash them). They will then be out of your (and everyone elses) hair and won't be able to come back for 10 - 15 minutes (due to them crashing and the region beginning the logout process)

This isn't that proper way of solving it, but LL very rarely do anything so it's best to take matters into your own hands.

Good luck

Nice to recommend a method to someone new that could get them banned instantly when they are ARd.

Nice to tell someone new that just about all Americans are rude in SL .. I am not American but been here over three years between my accounts and actually don't encounter many rude people at all.

In fact the last time I did see that behavour, it was taking a newbie to Free Dove to help her and saw others being attacked for being new by two female AVs who soon stopped when I counteracted them.

This is just simply beautiful...a not generalizing generalization.

BTW...Americans do own the entire grid. They are called Linden Lab, based in San Francisco, CA...US of A. But I wouldn't want to generalize.

It is just me or does it feel like Friday around here?

Kipit - welcome to SL :)

You might want to change the place you have set to "Home", right off the bat. Someone else will need to advise you on where to find a friendly place that will allow you to do so, and guide you through how to set that location as your home. Not all places allow this.

In the Preferences tab, you can check that you always log into the Home location, or you can check that you log into your last location. Logging into the "last location" can be quite exciting at times!

I had changed that for a different reason a few days ago, and one of my avs logged into Home, last night.....at an info-hub, probably similar to where you are landing. Had not been there in a very long time. My, how things have changed! If it had not been for a very low cut evening gown, and offering diamonds to someone to escort me out......might not have made it out of there alive!

They are pretty much the SL equivalent of the yahoos you see in small towns across the country. They never leave town, still hang out with the same group from high school, hanging out at the filling station, making fun of the city slickers passing through. Sometimes one may be playing the banjo someplace in the background.

I live in a small town, laugh at the city slickers trying to be "country" and I love the banjo....not a good sign huh? lol

Dude! That is like saying all German males wanna show me their willies (every male av in sl that has tried to show me their's has been German but I don't judge all Germans on the handful) or all Brazilians have the giant butts that are popular right now! There are good and bad everywhere and to say that one nationality is rude over any other is just not true. Who cares where you are from? Really? Be nice and treat others as you want to be treated.

When my avatar was only a few days old, I ran into a few rude people. I also met some wonderful people my first few days. The idiots you ran into are called "griefers".

Or saying something like "all swedish males in SL own surf sims" (based on the fact that all swedish guys that i know in SL do actually own surf sims...) :P

Like the parable of the ten blind men and the elephant.

The one who could only reach the tail thought an elephant was shaped like a worm.

The one who could only feel the ears said the elephant was shaped like a big fan.

Etc.

Actually it's the RL equivalent of teenagers in their parent's basement thinking anti-social behavior on the intarwebs makes them cool. They're here instead of in WoW because Mom won't let them have a monthly subscription.

Probably because Mom is already there and doesn't want junior bugging her. Which is why the kid is anti social. Mom is too busy playing computer games and Facebooking instead of taking care of her kids.

Unfortunately, the Welcome Areas that LL drops new people into are typically about as safe and welcoming an environment these days as the rough urban areas around the typical intercontinental bus station. Which is to say, not a safe or welcoming environment at all, and teeming with immature malcontents who get their kicks from insulting and bullying the newbies that are "fresh off the bus". And Linden Lab does virtually nothing at all to stop that behavior.

The best bet as a new person is, when ready to leave Help Island, open Search, pick any topic that interests you at all, and search for a site that has something related. Then TP there and breathe for a minute.

Many Universities have sims in SL, and those are usually very calm and well-policed areas. Search for "University" or "College" and you're likely to find many safe locations.

SL has many wonderful places to explore. It also has some real cesspits. I'm sorry your first experience was so poor, and hope you'll stay, and explore, and see some of the better things SL has to offer.

You know, Waterhead does kind of remind me of the Port Authority Bus Terminal in Manhattan.

It really is sad, and another statement on LL's general bumbling that their "Welcome Areas" are anything but. There is no excuse for it.

Maybe they should just feed everyone through resident managed welcome areas?

It might not be such a bad thing...LL sure doesn't seem capable of handling it. They redacted the Mentors....at least they were doing some good.

There are some other arrival areas associated with alternate registration sites. If you go through slnamewatch.com to choose a name, you often have to register at somewhere other than secondlife.com, and when you first log in, you arrive at that registrar's starting point.

Some of them land you at the start of a tutorial, and unless you know how to tp out, you have to at least walk through the tutorial.

I'm guessing the people who have these registration sites use SL's API to register people and set their arrival point.

Which might be interesting to do if you had some place for ppl to come to...
