Picking Things Up

I was answering questions for a newbie a few days ago, and she mentioned that her mouse cursor turned into a "hand" symbol if she hovered it over an object and left clicked it. She asked "Is that for picking things up?"

I was nonplussed. First, because after eleven months in world, I'd never noticed this hand symbol and had no idea what it was for. But, much more importantly, I suddenly realized...

WE CAN'T PICK THINGS UP!

Sure, we can open the edit menu (on things we own) and manipulate them with the edit tools. We can attach things from our inventories. We can give things to other people and receive them. But we cannot simply walk up to something, issue a simple command, and grasp it in our avatar's hand. Such a normal, everyday, *human* behavior, and nobody had thought to implement it in our virtual world.

I suddenly felt crippled, cut off from the world.

How about it, code monkeys? (not just the LL crowd, I mean all you virtual world creators out there). Let's have some real interaction.

Hold control and click it. If you have rights to move it via edit menu, you can drag it around that way. But be careful, you can't CTRL+z will not undo the movement from dragging like this.

Also, really fun to use with physical objects, as you can toss them - quite literally - at each other

I often get the hand symbol when I hover my mouse over certain objects. When they don't belong to me and I click on them, a lock symbol is added to the hand.

Thank you for solving part of my problem...now I know what that hand thingie is!

That doesn't address my larger issue, though. This is supposed to be an interactive environment, darn it...our avatars ought to be able to pick things up. A drink at a bar, a magazine on a table...

And while we are at it, I want a purse that acts like a purse, not just a decoration. I want one that I can put things in, and take things out of. I think something like this could be done, maybe even without major changes to the current structure of SL.

For example, imagine that you have a purse. It could be any sort of container, really...a suitcase, a backpack...the purse would include a "rummaging in" animation, and would be in effect a front end into an inventory folder (or might actually contain the objects itself, the way a box prim does right now). Clicking on the purse would activate the "rummaging" animation, and would present you with a list of the contents. You could then select an object and wear it.

I can think of a lot of things I'd like to stuff in such a purse. My cigarettes and lighter. My animated compact and lipstick. My 1911A1 pistol. A change of underwear. A bathing suit. A couple of attachments that I usually only wear in very private situations.

My 1911A1 pistol.

YEAH! 'cause when you wear it on your hip you keep hitting me in a sensitive area when we dance together.

Mmhmm, and over a year and a half ago, right after the appearance station when you signed up, there was a parrot you couldn't talk to, then a table with a ball you could supposedly pick up and move around, which was lying on the ground and refused to budge.

I looked for help, (there was help back then) and someone magically appeared, said it was now fixed and promptly disappeared (I now know it was a Linden who teleported to where I was but totally shocked and mystified me at the time).

Of course, after they left I still couldn't move it. ;)

However, in a club the other night, there's a bullseye on the floor (supposed to be some air force emblem or something, but looks like a bullseye no matter what the builder says ;)) with which we made marbles, having fun rolling them around each other and trying not to lose them.

You can also make big one, sit inside and others can pick you up and roll you around, LOL

Anyways, to pick things up simply (as others have said) hold down control and the object has to be movable by anyone (a checkbox in the first tab of the edit box) :)

(You can also pick things up that are yours by right-clicking on them inworld and selecting attach to whichever hand you want to pick them up with.)

You'd just substitute one injury for another, me fine bucko. That purse will be HEAVY.

I still want one, though. I promise I'll put it on the bar when we dance.

I think I picked up something at one of those newbie sex hangouts when I was new. I've been on SLantibiotics for months now and it won't go away.

I just tried that.
I rezzed a sphere a few metres away from me.
Right-click / More / Attach / TO right hand

Whoooooshhhh!

I was put into flying mode and ended up hovering where the thing had been.
The thing was on my hand theough. Mission accomplished I suppose.

So we can sort pick things up.

Can we drop them?
Detach..... Poof!!! It's in Inventory.

If I sit on something first, then the attach does nothing for either of us.

Nope. Drop has no effect.
Doesn't even drop my ARC score :)

Wowsa!

Ctrl/Right-click-hold (= Drag/Move) a physical object.

And now I'm banging balls (so to speak) off the walls of my skybox.
Fun!

Thank you :)

If an object is physics-enabled, it can be picked up and moved--that's when the hand icon appears. All my dog's toys are physics-enabled; I move them to play fetch with him. And yes, I can toss them and drop them from a hight as well.

Then it would be like the rotten Sims. You would run around in circles screaming in agony while you burst into flames and burned to death, too damn stupid to stop, drop and roll, like the teach in friggin' KINDEGARTEN, or to use the fire extinguisher that you're practically tripping over as you run around engulfed in a ball of fire. The guy behind Tegg Bode's computer would be mortified at the suffering he's caused an innocent by the mere act of forgetting to put on a glove when he took a tray of cookies out of the oven.

Not that I'm still bitter. Just sayin' is all...
