Unlike SL, I am so not surprised about people who don't get Twitter.

I get Twitter, FaceBook, MySpace, Plurk, Hurl, blogs, whatever just fine.

I just don't have a need to broadcast to the universe what I am doing every minute of the day. or week. or month. I'm not really all that special to this universe. To my friends and family, maybe, but they have no need to know that; most are just happy to get together during the holidays and catch up. That's fine by me, I have much more work and better things to do than to author a line of gossip every few minutes.

I realize that some people feel they have a need to make world+dog aware of their existence, and that's fine, too. I just don't have a need to know. That goes most especially for politicians and celebrities.

It's just a tool; if someone finds is meets a need, good for them. However, anyone who insists that I need to get involved in that stuff will find me rather recalcitrant. Maybe I am just getting old, but I wasn't much of a fad-follower, even in high-school. I didn't care about them then, and I certainly don't care about them now. Shoes, clothes, candy/gum, hair styles, idioms, etc. Pretty much just ignored that behavior.

But I told him the other day that it would be nice if I didn't have to text him separately from my other friends and family members just because he doesn't want to sign up on Twitter. He was silent for a moment, then said "But, I'm special".

Yeah. That's the sort of friends I have.

He IS special. Surely you wouldn't disagree?

Agreed. I am a pretty private person. I don't talk about my relationships or everyday problems to just anyone, that's what BFF's are for.:p So I don't get the need to twitter, blog whatever unless there is a ongoing topic or theme to it. One of my good friend's works for myspace. She is like signed into every single social networking thing out there and it annoys me to no end. Sure I want to know how she is doing, but from HER,one on one not effin facebook or twitter.

Same. A Phone call is all I need, and even that is usually brief, to set up a face to face if possible. For long distance friends and family, the quick phone call is enough.

Also, I hate the term "Social Networking", it's so geeky cold and impersonal.

He's my very best friend in the world. Nope, wouldn't disagree.

I'm actually sort of glad about the whole "Twitter is so 2008" thing. We'll get rid of all the people who post about going to the bathroom and such, maybe. (Not that there's anything wrong with that, but there's a reason those types don't get many followers.) I'm a guy with something to say more often than not, and Twitter helps me get people to my written word (and my photos, and my art, and other stuff). It's a tool, like anything else. It's all in what you do with it.

This is true. It's just that too many tools are using tools....... :p

*Not inferring that Ghosty is a tool.

Has there ever been someone twittering about burning up inside a building? I would read that.

I read a blog yesterday about people who use twitter as an IM/SMS service, which makes their tweetstreams look rather weird, because you only see one side of the "conversation".

Yeah, I don't think that is a very good use of the tool.

Kinda like people who converse through comments on Myspace and such?

It's horrid.

Says me, the authority on pretty much nothing.

Yeah - I'm not sure this is what Clarke had in mind when he envisioned the geosynchronous satellites that make all this possible.

For myself I'm not ready to join this proto-hive mind I see developing everywhere. I love other people's thoughts, but I'm comfortable with my own most of the time. There's not enough signal to noise in this world as it is.

That's actually been talked about amongst more well-educated minds on the subject of writing and literature; that we are becoming awash in a sea of trivial noise; that the legacy of this generation won't be great works and great accomplishments in writing, but an endless, chaotic fabric of noise that obscures anything significant.

They say it is because the tools encourage people to just dump out whatever is on their minds, with little to no organization or editing. It generally lacks cohesiveness, substance, and significance, leading to what amounts to an endless plain of dust and pebbles, bereft of majestic mountain peaks that are the hallmark of good literature.

Good writers also tend to dump out stuff all the time, but they don't publish the "raw" dumps from their minds; they spend time assembling, editing, and building up their works as part of the process. Unfortunately, when people publish their "raw" data, there's little incentive to go back and assemble/edit it into something more substantial. After all, it's already published.

The most effective broadcasting service I've seen is HelloTxt.com; sign up there, then sign up with all the services it can broadcast to and add them to hellotxt, and you'll be speaking to and being ignored by practically everyone in the world. 44 sites all with one post.

Twitter, Friendfeed, Facebook, MySpace, Tumblr, LinkedIn, etc.

Jumpy should certainly be posting ads in LinkedIn.
